Book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy

Download or read book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy written by Silvana Greco and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes, for the first time, an in-depth analysis of the Philosophie sociale, published in Paris in 1793 by Moses Dobruska (1753-1794). Dobruska was a businessman, scholar, and social philosopher, born into a Jewish family in Moravia, who converted to Catholicism, gained wide recognition at the Habsburg court in Vienna, and then emigrated to France to join the French Revolution. Dobruska, who took on the name Junius Frey during his Parisian sojourn, barely survived his book. Accused of conspiring on behalf of foreign powers, he was guillotined on April 5, 1794, at the height of The Terror, on the same day as Georges Jacques Danton. From Dobruska's ideas, which were widely used between the late eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth century without attribution to their author, emerge some of the key concepts of the social sciences as we know them today. An enthusiastic and unfortunate revolutionary and sometimes a brilliant theorist, Moses Dobruska deserves a role of his own in the history of sociology. Book excerpt: The Frankfurt School' refers to the members associated with the "Institut fur Sozialforschung (Institute for Social Research) " which was founded in Frankfurt in 1923. The work of this group is generally agreed to have been a landmark in twentieth century social science. It is of seminal importance in our understanding of culture, progress, politics, production, consumption and method. This set of six volumes provides a full picture of the School by examining the important developments that have occured since the deaths of the original core of Frankfurt scholars. All the major figures--Adorno, Horkheimer, Marcuse, Benjamin--are represented. In particular, the important post-war work of Jurgen Habermas is fully assessed. The collection also covers the work of many of the minor figures associated with the School who have been unfairly neglected in the past, resulting in the most complete survey and guide to the "oeuvre" of the Frankfurt School.

This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Classic Collection of Henri Bergson" brings together some of the most influential philosophical works of Henri Bergson, the renowned French philosopher and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1927. This collection showcases Bergson's groundbreaking ideas and profound insights into the nature of time, consciousness, memory, evolution, laughter, and dreams. In "Time and Free Will," Bergson challenges traditional concepts of time and argues for the existence of subjective time, exploring the relationship between time, perception, and human freedom. "Matter and Memory" delves into the interplay between matter and consciousness, examining how memory shapes our understanding of reality. Bergson's "Creative Evolution" presents a groundbreaking theory of evolution that goes beyond the mechanistic view of life, emphasizing the vital force and the continuous emergence of novelty in the evolutionary process. "Laughter" explores the nature of humor, its role in human social interaction, and its connection to the human condition. Finally, "Dreams" offers a deep exploration of the realm of dreams, unveiling their significance in understanding the workings of the human mind and their potential for revealing hidden truths. Through his eloquent and thought-provoking writing, Bergson challenges established philosophical frameworks, offering fresh perspectives on fundamental concepts of existence and human experience. This collection is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the philosophical inquiries that shaped the 20th century and beyond.
