Dans un premier temps, l’auteur précise les concepts d’éthique, de morale, de déontologie, de valeur et de norme, concepts-clé du projet déontologique. Comment penser leur articulation ? Entre l’obligation morale et la contrainte juridique, il y a place pour ce que l’on peut appeler une exigence professionnelle. Puis sont analysés le sens et la place de l’école. Il s’agit, d’une part, de dégager les propriétés propres au lieu scolaire, lieu irréductible à l’espace domestique, au monde du travail et à celui de la délibération publique ; d’autre part, de préciser le contexte sociétal actuel où la juridicisation va de pair avec une désymbolisation croissante du droit, faisant de celui-ci à la fois une promesse et une menace. Dans ce contexte, une orientation déontologique est une attitude raisonnable, relevant moins d’une aspiration morale que d’une attitude lucide prenant acte des changements intervenus dans la société et dans l’exercice du métier d’enseignant.
