Book excerpt: La survenue de grossesses non prévues chez les adolescentes est un enjeu majeur de santé publique d’autant plus que l’on constate depuis dix ans, une hausse du taux d’interruption volontaire de grossesse (IVG) chez les mineures. L’objectif principal de l’étude est d’étudier les aspects psycho-sociaux des adolescentes demandant une IVG. L’objectif secondaire est d’étudier leur couverture contraceptive. Il s’agit d’une étude qualitative basée sur des entretiens semi-dirigés réalisés à l’occasion de l’entretien psycho-social obligatoire en pré-IVG des mineures, à la planification familiale d’un hôpital public. Vingt jeunes femmes ont été interrogées. 70% des jeunes femmes interrogées sont en couple, cette vie de couple dure depuis plus de six mois pour la majorité d’entre elles. Pourtant la moitié de l’effectif interrogé n’utilise pas de méthode de contraception lors des rapports sexuels. Seules deux adolescentes ont eu recours à la contraception d’urgence après le rapport à risque. La survenue d’une grossesse non désirée ne se résume pas uniquement à un défaut de contraception. Des facteurs cognitifs et psychologiques inhérents à la période particulière de l’adolescence interviennent. On constate en effet un manque de connaissance et la persistance de fausses croyances sur la sexualité et la contraception chez les adolescentes. Il existe parfois un désir inconscient de grossesse pour vérifier l’intégrité corporelle ou comme moyen de communication avec l’environnement familial ou social. La prévention de l’IVG chez les mineures passe avant tout par la reconnaissance sociale de la sexualité des jeunes et leur éducation par les professionnels qui les entourent. Grâce à son statut qui le place au centre de la problématique socio-familiale, le médecin généraliste est un des acteurs-clés capable de répondre aux attentes et aux besoins spécifiques de ses jeunes patientes.

Drawing on 90 interviews conducted with baby boomers living in London and Paris, the book demonstrates how their aspirations for leisure and consumption converged with family responsibilities and obligations. It shows how the baby boomers emerged from an authoritative upbringing to challenge some of the traditional assumptions of the family, such as marriage and cohabitation. The rise of feminism led by the baby-boomers is examined, together with its impact on family forms and structures. The book shows how women’s trajectories veered between the two extremes of family and employment, swerving between the models of stay-at-home mother and working woman. It demonstrates how new family configurations such as solo parenting, and recomposed families were adopted by the baby boomers. Today, as they enter into retirement, the baby-boomers remain closely involved in the lives of their children and parents, although relationships with elderly parents are maintained primarily through a sense of duty and obligation. The book concludes that the baby boomers have both been influenced by and actors to the changes and transformations that have occurred to family life. They reconciled and continue to reconcile, individualism with family obligations. As grandparents often with an ageing parent still alive, the baby boomers wish to keep the independence that has been the hallmark of their generation whilst not abandoning family life.

Now that survey questionnaires are able to record individual trajectories in greater depth, changes of status can no longer be viewed simply as separate events, but involve a transition process of variable duration. The observation, modelling and interpretation of these fuzzy thresholds between two situations constitute a dynamic field of research in the social sciences. The authors of this manual have pooled their experience of event-history data collection to address the questions of "focus", i.e. finding the right observation distance to grasp the complexity of life histories, and of time, i.e. choosing the right timescale of detailed information collection. After analysing the links between quantitative and qualitative data, addressing the distinction between facts and perceptions, and deconstructing analysis data categories, they offer a number of conceptual and methodological solutions. This study extends beyond the scope of specific examples to develop a major empirical approach in a still largely unexplored area.
