Book The Hidden History of Women s Ordination

Download or read book The Hidden History of Women s Ordination written by Gary Macy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roman Catholic leadership still refuses to ordain women officially or even to recognize that women are capable of ordination. But is the widely held assumption that women have always been excluded from such roles historically accurate? How might the current debate change if our view of the history of women's ordination were to change? In The Hidden History of Women's Ordination, Gary Macy argues that for the first twelve hundred years of Christianity, women were in fact ordained into various roles in the church. He uncovers references to the ordination of women in papal, episcopal and theological documents of the time, and the rites for these ordinations have survived. The insistence among scholars that women were not ordained, Macy shows, is based on a later definition of ordination, one that would have been unknown in the early Middle Ages.

Book Deaconesses the Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology

Download or read book Deaconesses the Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology written by Eleni Kasselouri-Hatzivassiliadi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights the thorny and divisive issue of the admission of women into the sacramental diaconal priesthood of the Christian Church from the Orthodox theological perspective. The contributions here stem from scientific papers presented at an international conference titled “Deaconesses, Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology”, organized in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2015 by the Center of Ecumenical, Missiological and Environmental Studies (CEMES). They cover almost all the fields of biblical, liturgical, patristic, systematic, canonical, and historical theology. The volume’s main focus is the ancient order of deaconesses, in connection with the overall issue of the ordination of women. Although most papers address the issues from an Orthodox perspective, their sober analysis can provide theological argumentation for the wider Christian community, both the Churches and Christian denominations that exclude women from the sacramental priesthood, and those that have already adopted their ordination.

Book Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church

Download or read book Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church written by John O'Brien and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's Ordination in the Catholic Church argues that women can be validly ordained to ministerial office. O'Brien shows that claims by Roman dicasteries for an unbroken chain of authoritative tradition on the non-ordainability of women--a novel rather than traditional argument--are not historically supported. In the primitive Church, with the offices of deacon, presbyter, and bishop in process of development, women exercised ministries later understood as pertaining to those offices. The sub-apostolic period downplayed women's ministry for reasons of cultural adaptation, not because it was thought that fidelity to Christ required it. Furthermore, extensive epigraphical evidence, from a wide geographical area, references women deacons and presbyters during the first millennium. Restrictive developments in the concept of ordination from the twelfth century onwards do not negate how, before that, women were validly ordained according to contemporary ecclesial understanding. Repeated canonical prohibitions on ordaining women show both that women were being ordained and how those bans were very selectively implemented. These canons were a cultural practice in search of a theology, and the subsequent theological justifications for restricting ordination to men appealed to supposed female inferiority against the background of priesthood as eminence rather than service. O'Brien shows that the assertion of women's non-ordainability is a matter of canon law rather than doctrine. As such, that law can be reformed.

Book Woman Women and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr Sigel

Download or read book Woman Women and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr Sigel written by Sarah Hinlicky Wilson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elisabeth Behr-Sigel (1907-2005), a convert to Orthodoxy in her early twenties and a central figure of Orthodox theology among Russian émigrés in Paris, first began to reflect on the question of women in the priesthood in 1976. Initially supporting the general consensus that priesthood would be impossible for the Orthodox, she came to retract this view, finding a basis for female ordination in women's distinct spiritual charisms. Behr-Sigel later shifted the foundation of her case to personhood, inspired by the work of fellow Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky, and arrived at the conclusion that all the Orthodox arguments against the ordination of women were, in fact, heretical at root. In this volume, Wilson analyzes all of Behr-Sigel's writings about women and the priesthood across the whole sweep of her career, demonstrating the development of her thought on women over the last thirty years of her life. She evaluates her relationship to feminism, Protestantism and movements within Orthodoxy, finally drawing conclusions about this much-contested matter for the ongoing debate in both the East and the West.

Book excerpt: When Pope Paul VI implemented the decision of the Second Vatican Council to renew the diaconate as a permanent order of ministry, he asked the logical question: "What about women deacons?" That question continues to be asked throughout the Church as the possibility of restoring women to the diaconate emerges more and more as a pressing answer to the ministerial needs of the Church. In Women in Ministry: Emerging Questions about the Diaconate, theologian Phyllis Zagano examines three distinct questions about the possibility of women in the diaconate: Is the inclusion of women in the permanent diaconate part of the unfinished business of Vatican II? What are the ecumenical implications of women ordained as deacons? Did Pope Benedict XVI envision the inclusion of women in the diaconate? These three timely and important essays are introduced by Deacon William T. Ditewig, PhD, director of lay and deacon formation in the Diocese of Monterey in California and former executive director of the Secretariat for the Diaconate of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC.
