Book The Palgrave Handbook of Environmental Restorative Justice

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Environmental Restorative Justice written by Brunilda Pali and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook explores the dynamic new field of Environmental Restorative Justice. Authors from diverse disciplines discuss how principles and practices of restorative justice can be used to address the threats and harms facing the environment today. The book covers a wide variety of subjects, from theoretical discussions about how to incorporate the voice of future generations, nature, and more-than-human animals and plants in processes of justice and repair, through to detailed descriptions of actual practices of Environmental Restorative Justice. The case studies explored in the volume are situated in a wide range of countries and in the context of varied forms of environmental harm – from small local pollution incidents, to endemic ongoing issues such as wildlife poaching, to cataclysmic environmental catastrophes resulting in cascades of harm to entire ecosystems. Throughout, it reveals how the relational and caring character of a restorative ethos can be conducive to finding solutions to problems through sharing stories, listening, healing, and holding people and organisations accountable for prevention and repairing of harm. It speaks to scholars in Criminology, Sociology, Law, and Environmental Justice and to practitioners, policy-makers, think-tanks and activists interested in the environment.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains the proceedings from the International Conference on the Control of Infectious Animal Diseases by Vaccination held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in April 2004. It provides up-to-date information and examples of successful controls of various diseases, including transboundary diseases, e.g. foot-and-mouth disease, rinderpest and bluetongue, as well as parasitic infestations by using traditional or marker vaccines. The publication aims at improving the international standards related to the use of vaccines and presents recommendations to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). All the partners in the decision-making process for controlling diseases, i.e. chief veterinary officers, animal health regulatory officials, veterinarians, cattle-raising associations and consumer associations will find useful advice for the elimination or eradication of pathogens. This volume will also be of great interest to professors in veterinary medicine, animal health researchers at universities, public research laboratories and commercial organisations developing vaccines with markers or without viral non-structural proteins for distinguishing between infected and vaccinated animals.

Book excerpt: From the internationally best-selling author of Purge and When the Doves Disappeared, a spellbinding new novel set in present-day Helsinki, about a young woman with a fantastical secret who is trying to solve the mystery of her mother's death. When Anita Naakka jumps in front of an oncoming train, her daughter, Norma, is left alone with the secret they have spent their lives hiding: Norma has supernatural hair, sensitive to the slightest changes in her mood--and the moods of those around her--moving of its own accord, corkscrewing when danger is near. And so it is her hair that alerts her, while she talks with a strange man at her mother's funeral, that her mother may not have taken her own life. Setting out to reconstruct Anita's final months--sifting through puzzling cell phone records, bank statements, video files--Norma begins to realize that her mother knew more about her hair's powers than she let on: a sinister truth beyond Norma's imagining. As Sofi Oksanen leads us ever more deeply into Norma's world, weaving together past and present, she gives us a dark family drama that is a searing portrait of both the exploitation of women's bodies and the extremes to which people will go for the sake of beauty.

  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Animal Camp written by Kathy Stevens and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picking up where she left off in Where the Blind Horse Sings, Kathy Stevens regales us with more tales of the rescued animals at Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS), some touching, some hilarious, all provocative. We meet Barbie, the broiler hen found hiding under a blue Honda in Brooklyn who falls for the animal ambassador Rambo, a ram with an uncanny sense of what others need. Then there’s Norma Rae, the turkey rescued from a “turkey bowl” just before Thanksgiving. There’s also Noah, a twenty-one-year-old stallion, starved and locked in a dark stall for his entire life until he came to the safety and plenty of CAS. Claude, the giant pink free-range pig, is but another of the “underfoot family,” those who roam the barnyard, free and with dignity, interacting with their own and other species in startling and profound ways. The love Stevens has for these animals, and the amount of love they give her in return, is stunning and will make any reader more thoughtful of how we treat a whole class of animals in this country. Pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, horses, goats, sheep, and more, march into CAS and into our hearts as we learn about their quirks and personalities and what makes us human.

Book Nonhuman Primate Welfare

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lauren M. Robinson
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-02-01
  • ISBN : 3030827089
  • Pages : 666 pages

Download or read book Nonhuman Primate Welfare written by Lauren M. Robinson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews the broad topic of welfare in nonhuman primates under human care. Chapters detail the history of primates in captivity, ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of nonhuman primates as entertainment or in research, the different approaches that welfare are measured, and how housing, enrichment, and other conditions can foster or degrade welfare. Since humans began keeping nonhuman primates we have made vast strides in understanding their cognitive abilities, strong social bonds, vibrant personalities, and their capacity for joy and suffering. With an increasing number of countries banning the use of great apes in biomedical research, the welfare of primates in zoos and research facilities has gained increasing attention. This interdisciplinary work features contributors from many of the fields involved and those on both sides of the issue, thus providing an exhaustive overview of primate welfare. Readers from animal welfare science, primatology, animal testing, veterinary medicine, conservation to ethics and legislation will find this an important account.
