Book excerpt: There are many books about abortion. These books may argue for one side or the other of the abortion debate, but until now what has been lacking is a book that just simply gives the facts about abortion... facts that are evidence-based and reflect good scholarship. Just the Facts: Abortion A to Z is the book that answers this need. Regardless of which side of the abortion debate a reader espouses, she can find in this book answers to questions that vex her. The authors are women physicians who have extensive experience in women's health and in writing accessible information for the lay reader. The entries are illuminated by real-life stories of women who have had to face the question of abortion and the various decisions made by them in their particular circumstances.

Book Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Ligia De Jesús Castaldi and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean is the first major book to analyze the abortion laws of the Latin American and Caribbean nations that are parties to the American Convention on Human Rights. Making use of a broad range of materials relating to human rights and abortion law not yet available in English, the first part of this book analyzes how Inter-American human rights bodies have interpreted the American Convention’s prenatal right to life. The second part examines Article 4(1) of the American Convention, comparing and analyzing the laws regarding prenatal rights and abortion in all twenty-three nations that are parties to this treaty. Castaldi questions how Inter-American human rights bodies currently interpret Article 4(1). Against the predominant view, she argues that the purpose of this treaty is to grant legal protection of the unborn child from elective abortion that is broad and general, not merely exceptional. Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean offers an objective analysis of national and international laws on abortion, proposing a new interpretation of the American Convention’s right-to-life provision that is nonrestrictive and provides general protection for the unborn. The book will appeal not only to students and scholars in the field of international human rights but also to human rights advocates more generally.

Book A Fragmented Landscape

Download or read book A Fragmented Landscape written by Silvia De Zordo and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since World War II, abortion policies have remained remarkably varied across European nations, with struggles over abortion rights at the forefront of national politics. This volume analyses European abortion governance and explores how social movements, political groups, and individuals use protests and resistance to influence abortion policy. Drawing on case studies from Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the European Union, it analyses the strategies and discourses of groups seeking to liberalise or restrict reproductive rights. It also illuminates the ways that reproductive rights politics intersect with demographic anxieties, as well as the rising nationalisms and xenophobia related to austerity policies, mass migration and the recent terrorist attacks in Europe.

Book Responsible Reproductive Choice in the 21st Century

Download or read book Responsible Reproductive Choice in the 21st Century written by Malcolm de Roubaix and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-05 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically traces the development, significance, and implications of female reproductive choice. Paramount is the right to safe termination of pregnancy (TOP). In the USA, these rights are under threat after the reversal of Roe v Wade (1973), confirming the eternally contested nature of the pro-life/pro-choice standoff. The approach is unique and from all angles – historical, social, emotional, and legal. South African experience is evaluated against a global backdrop. Arguing from an ethics of responsibility, the book presents a justified, balanced, rational, and moderate position on the moral acceptability of TOP. It proposes that the morality TOP be evaluated by balancing inherent foetal moral significance against contingent potentiality: context and circumstance that may determine foetal development. TOP is a choice a woman faces with each pregnancy. It always has moral implications – exclusive to the life of the woman. So, too, do continued pregnancy and parenthood, but these are of greater magnitude and duration.
