A number of line configurations, including a high voltage dc SPTL design, are examined from a cryoengineering point of view. New calculations on the cryostabilization of the superconductors are presented. Measurements of the critical current on several new superconductors and on a 20-m, well-stabilized Nb3Sn tape are reported. Acoustical emission is being evaluated as a new technique to predetermine damage to Nb3Sn conductors during cable fabrication.

The measured magnetic field profile near a superconducting tape carrying a current is explained by a simple model of the current distribution. The propagation velocity of a normal zone in a stabilized superconductor was measured and found to depend on the direction of the current flow. Some efficiency and cost factors of several possible designs for a dc SPTL are compared with transmission line alternatives.

The line consists of a hollow-core flexible coaxial cable, using multifilamentary or tape Nb3Sn superconductor and wrapped tape dielectric, within a rigid cryogenic envelope. Cryogen flows through the core, is expanded in a turbine and returns over the outer cable surface. The concept is applied to power levels of 1 to 10 GW and for a range of line voltages and maximum dielectric stresses. Systems considerations define capacity ratings and optimum operating voltages. Cost estimates for the various components and cost optimizations are presented.

Book excerpt: In support of the belief that direct current superconducting power transmission lines (dc SPTL) will provide the most economical and most efficient means of transporting bulk power underground, the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) is developing a prototype dc SPTL with a nominal rating of 5,000 MVA (50 kA at 100 kV). The LASL model line is described, some of the advantages of this system vis-a-vis other cable systems for transporting bulk power, and details of some of the program plans and progress to date are listed. Finally, studies of a realistic transmission system that support the optimistic outlook for the dc SPTL application are described.
