Book The development of deep brain stimulation for neurological and psychiatric disorders clinical societal and ethical issues

Download or read book The development of deep brain stimulation for neurological and psychiatric disorders clinical societal and ethical issues written by Thomas E. Schlaepfer and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date more than eighty thousand patients worldwide have received deep brain stimulation (DBS), mainly in order to alleviate symptoms of treatment-resistant disorders such as tremor associated with Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, chronic pain, epilepsy, obsessive compulsive disorder, major depression and Tourette syndrome. The number of indications for neurological and psychiatric conditions using this technology is rapidly increasing, raising important societal and ethical issues that cannot be dealt with by scientists and clinicians on their own, but need discussions among all possible stakeholders on questions such as: what are the comprehensive risks and benefits of this technology? what is the real impact on patients’ life, in terms of health, quality of life and personal identity? This Research Topic provides an overview of potentials and limitations of deep brain stimulation as used to treat neurological and psychiatric conditions, bringing together Mini Reviews, Perspectives and Opinion papers from key stakeholders interested in the development and social impact of this technology. It is also a continuation of the debate that started among scientists, clinicians, patients, sociologists, journalists, philosophers and other experts during the “brains in dialogue on deep brain stimulation” workshop that was organized in September 2010 in Warsaw, Poland, by the FP7 project bid – brains in dialogue (www.neuromedia.eu) coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of SISSA (Trieste, Italy).

Book Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery

Download or read book Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery written by Reuben D. Johnson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based medicine is a concept that has come to the fore in the past few years. Clinicians are increasingly encouraged to practise patient management based on available evidence in the scientific literature. For example, new pharmacological therapies are only used when large randomized trials have 'proven' that a particular drug is better than existing ones. This is also the case in surgical specialties, although surgery has traditionally seen a lack of use of this information, with individual surgeon's preferences being most influential in treatment choices. However, more recently, there has been a large expansion of trials and studies aimed at providing surgeons with information to guide their choices using firm evidence. This new edition has been revised and expanded to include new data where relevant, and also features a new chapter on pituitary surgery. Landmark Papers in Neurosurgery, Second Edition, remains a key collection of the most important trials and studies in neurosurgery, allowing the reader to rapidly extract key results, and making it essential reading for all neurosurgeons and trainees in the field.

Book Canadian Political Science Association Conference on Statistics 1961

Download or read book Canadian Political Science Association Conference on Statistics 1961 written by William C. Hood and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1963-12-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958 the Canadian Political Science Association established a committee to look into ways and means of improving statistical research in the Social Sciences in Canada. One of the ways in which the committee thought this could be done was by establishing an annual forum where papers could be presented and discussed. The papers given at the first in 1960 have already appeared, and the second volume contains six of the ten papers given at Sir George Williams University, Montreal, in 1961. The papers are diverse alike in subject and statistical method, but most are concerned with recent population and labour movements. The papers are: "Regional Aspects of Labour Mobility in Canada, 1956-1959" by H.F. Greenway and G.W. Wheatley; "The Flow of Migration among the Provinces of Canada, 1951-1961" by Yoshiko Kasashara; "La Détermination des zones agricoles sous-marginates" by Gérald Fortin; "Some Calculations Relating to Trends and Fluctuations in the Post-War Canadian Labour Market" by Frank T. Denton; "Inter-Industry Estimates of Canadian Imports, 1949-1958" by T.I. Matuszewski, Paul R. Pitts, and John A. Swayer; and "Population Migration in the Atlantic Provinces" by Kari Levitt.

Book Couture Commerce

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexandra Palmer
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9780774808262
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Couture Commerce written by Alexandra Palmer and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s were the golden years of haute couture, captured by iconic images of glamorous models wearing dramatic clothes. Yet the real women who wore these clothes adapted them to suit their own tastes, altered them to extend their life, and often could not bear to part with them long after the dresses had outlived their use. This gorgeously illustrated book demonstrates why so many of these designs are still in existence and why we are fascinated by them fifty years later. Couture and Commerce investigates how and why postwar couture fashion was important in its own day. The Paris couture houses survived due to the enthusiasm of the North American fashion press and commercial buyers. Alexandra Palmer traces the European haute couture trade with North America by following actual surviving couture dresses from the design house sketch, through the model used in New York fashion shows and as a template for copies and knock-offs, and finally to the consumer. Couture and Commerce is a remarkable mixture of accessible text, color photographs of the original garments, design house sketches and photographs, retailers’ advertisements, and society page images. Weaving together analysis of the clothes and interviews with those who traded, sold, and wore couture, Alexandra Palmer vividly recreates the 1950s fashion world.
