Book excerpt: A New Plèiade is a celebration of close literary friendships among seven eminent American poets—Fred Chappell, Kelly Cherry, R. H. W. Dillard, Brendan Galvin, George Garrett, David R. Slavitt, and Henry Taylor. The affection, fun, and mutual respect of this happy association of poets have resulted in this anthology, in which the selection from the work of each was made by the contributor whose name precedes his or hers alphabetically. Endowed with great variety as well as delightful and unexpected connections of subjects and personae, A New Plèiade is exceptional not only because it unites in a single volume these seven accomplished poets: the real allure of this enchanting, broadly appealing collection is the diversity, the vast scope of their masterful voices. The bucolic musings of Fred Chappell greet the reader, followed by the searching, graceful lamentations of Kelly Cherry, the unconventional observations of R.H.W. Dillard, and the eccentric creations of Brendan Galvin. George Garrett’s precise, shining insights precede David R. Slavitt’s erudite, witty contemplations until, alas, Henry Taylor bids farewell by bringing us full circle, back to a pastoral world reminiscent of Chappell’s rural samplings. These poets have been delighting and entertaining one another—and their loyal readers—for decades. With A New Plèiade, these seven illustrious bards—and good friends—are able to settle comfortably between the covers of one extraordinary book.

Book George Garrett

    Book Details:
  • Author : Casey Clabough
  • Publisher : Texas A&M University Press
  • Release : 2013-10-01
  • ISBN : 193787513X
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book George Garrett written by Casey Clabough and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering George Garrett’s life and work in the continuum of American literary history, it is perhaps most profitable to place him in the tradition of the now exceedingly rare Southern “man of letters”—he (or she) who embraces and produces literature in all its complexity and in multiple forms (novels, short stories, poems, plays, criticism, translation, editing, and so on). This kind of Southern writer, stretching back to Edgar Allan Poe, perhaps finds its best modern examples in the Nashville-based writers of the 1920s and 1930s. Chronologically, Garrett, born in 1929, probably was the most variously gifted Southern writer to arrive on the scene following Robert Penn Warren. Indeed, it is in such company that his life and work belong.

Book Southern Writers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joseph M. Flora
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2006-06-21
  • ISBN : 0807148555
  • Pages : 498 pages

Download or read book Southern Writers written by Joseph M. Flora and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2006-06-21 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Southern Writers assumes its distinguished predecessor's place as the essential reference on literary artists of the American South. Broadly expanded and thoroughly revised, it boasts 604 entries-nearly double the earlier edition's-written by 264 scholars. For every figure major and minor, from the venerable and canonical to the fresh and innovative, a biographical sketch and chronological list of published works provide comprehensive, concise, up-to-date information. Here in one convenient source are the South's novelists and short story writers, poets and dramatists, memoirists and essayists, journalists, scholars, and biographers from the colonial period to the twenty-first century. What constitutes a "southern writer" is always a matter for debate. Editors Joseph M. Flora and Amber Vogel have used a generous definition that turns on having a significant connection to the region, in either a personal or literary sense. New to this volume are younger writers who have emerged in the quarter century since the dictionary's original publication, as well as older talents previously unknown or unacknowledged. For almost every writer found in the previous edition, a new biography has been commissioned. Drawn from the very best minds on southern literature and covering the full spectrum of its practitioners, Southern Writers is an indispensable reference book for anyone intrigued by the subject.

Book Fragments of Grace

Download or read book Fragments of Grace written by Pamela Constable and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four and a half years, Pamela Constable, a veteran foreign correspondent and award-winning author, has traveled through South Asia on assignment for the Washington Post. Following religious conflicts, political crises, and natural disasters, she also searched for signs of humanity and dignity in societies rife with violence, poverty, prejudice, and greed. In Afghanistan, she made numerous visits while the country suffered under the hostile rule of the Taliban, attempted to reach the capital in a convoy that was ambushed and saw four journalists killed. She finally moved to Kabul in late 2001 to chronicle the country's post-Taliban rebirth. In Pakistan, she covered a military coup in 1999, immersed herself in the mys-terious world of Muslim mosques and academies, and discovered both the extremist and tolerant faces of Islam. In India, she attended one of the largest spiritual gatherings of Hindu pilgrims in history and then rushed to the horrific aftermath of a devastating earthquake. She repeatedly visited the Kashmir Valley, where Pakistani-backed Muslim guerrillas are waging a seemingly endless war with Indian security forces. In Nepal, she covered the crown prince's massacre of the royal family and journeyed to remote villages where communist rebels brought rigid moral order to life. In Sri Lanka, she explored a tropical paradise where reclusive insurgents trained children to become suicide bombers in pursuit of a utopian ethnic homeland. Between extended sojourns in South Asia, Constable returned to the West to reflect on the risks and rewards of her profession, revisit her roots, and compare her experiences with Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. Her book is a uniquely personal exploration of the rich but solitary life of a foreign correspondent, set against a regional backdrop of extraordinary political and religious tumult.

Book Going to See the Elephant

Download or read book Going to See the Elephant written by George Garrett and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Going to See the Elephant is a safari into the wilds of the mind of George Garrett, and a more interesting place to explore is hard to imagine. Whether he (or his beleaguered alter-ego, John Towne) is examining the writing life, tipping his hat to other writers, or fulminating about the sorry state of the world we live in, he is well worth a listen - both for the sheer pleasure of it and for the wisdom to be found in it." —R.H.W. Dillard, author of Understanding George Garrett

Book Yellow Shoe Poets

  • Author : George Garrett
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 1999-10-01
  • ISBN : 9780807124512
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Yellow Shoe Poets written by George Garrett and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1964, when Louisiana State University Press published its inaugural book of verse (Miller Williams’s A Circle of Stone), its poetry list has grown exponentially—191 books by 93 poets—into a program that inspires understandable pride in those associated with it. Two collections have won the Pulitzer Prize—The Flying Change (1986), by Henry Taylor, and Alive Together (1996), by Lisel Mueller. Another book by Mueller, The Need to Hold Still (1980), won the National Book Award, while several other LSU titles have been finalists for that distinction, most recently The Fields of Praise (1997), by Marilyn Nelson, and The Vigil (1993), by Margaret Gibson. Dozens more have been recognized for their excellence through a host of various honors. The Press publishes the winner of the annual Walt Whitman Award, given by The Academy of American Poets for a first collection; and in 1996 it launched the Southern Messenger series in collaboration with Dave Smith, bringing two shining works into the fold each year. The appearance of The Collected Poems of Robert Penn Warren in 1998 meant for the Press the realization of a long, dearly held dream. To mark this thirty-five-year-old tradition as the century and millennium turn, and to offer a sampling of its richness, The Yellow Shoe Poets, a retrospective anthology, was compiled under the editorship of George Garrett, a longtime colleague of the Press and the author of eight poetry volumes. (Say “the LSU poets” real fast with a southern drawl and you get the ridiculously wonderful moniker that poet Elizabeth Seydel Morgan’s young friend innocently mistook for this noble band. It’s an image Brendan Galvin has appropriated to a perfect fit in his poem “Yellow Shoe Poet,” written on behalf of his fellow “yellow shoes” across the years.) All 173 poems are taken from LSU Press books and were selected by the poets themselves, if living. Arranged alphabetically by author, they consist of at least one poem from every poet published by the Press. Goethe’s admonition that “one ought every day at least, to read a good poem” can find no better starting point than in The Yellow Shoe Poets.

Book excerpt: "A boon for classicists and general readers alike. For the reader who comes to tragedy for the first time, these translations are eminently 'accessible,' and consummately American in tone and feeling. For the classicist, these versions constitute an ambitious reinterpretation of traditional masterpieces; after 2,500 years, the poetry of Euripides and Aeschylus has found a new voice—in fact, ten of them."—Boston Book Review
