Book excerpt: In a non-domestic building, electric lighting is essential for a pleasant and productive working environment It is also a major contributor to the building's energy cost; indeed, for many offices it is the largest single consumer of primary energy. The use of automatic lighting controls is an important option in both new and existing buildings and complements other options to reduce energy costs from lighting. Waste in lighting energy occurs mainly in two ways: the use of full artificial lighting when daylight is sufficient to meet part, or even all, of the lighting requirements and lighting being maintained when occupants are absent. Behavioural studies at BRE have established that much of this waste is a result of traditional switching arrangements for lighting: a single or multiple on/off switch panel situated by the entrance to the space. This digest discusses automatic lighting controls and gives guidance on the types of control best suited for particular types of installation. It shows how energy savings can be predicted and compared with traditional manual switching and suggests alternatives to the traditional approach. A decision chart guides the specifier or designer by classifying the space in question according to its use pattern. This classification leads to a ranked assessment of possible automatic control strategies. The digest provides a method for predicting energy savings and assesses the other potential benefits from lighting controls; it also relates the provision of energy conscious control facilities to general lighting quality considerations.

Book excerpt: This paper examines three different lighting controls on a single floor of a typical office building for a period of six months during 2009. The energy savings and effectiveness of the three different lighting controls in operation were evaluated. The lighting controls examined are occupancy sensors, daylight controls and central off. The energy saved from these lighting controls in over a six month period in 2009 was compared against figures from 2008 when manual switching was the dominant control. It was found that after six months of data in 2009, results indicated a significant savings from 2008 figures. In the single floor of the office building, where the three controls were installed, savings of 19% were obtained. Automatic dimming of the lights through daylight sensors, automatic switching of the lights through occupancy sensors and the central off timing function turning off any forgotten lights, all helped towards this 19% savings. Since the six months of data saved 19% of energy from the previous year, the typical pay-back period for this type of investment would be between 3-4 years. This research indicates a pay-back period of just over 3 years.

Book excerpt: An acute and crucial societal problem is the energy consumed in existing commercial buildings. There are 1.5 million commercial buildings in the U.S. with only about 3% being built each year. Hence, existing buildings need to be properly operated and maintained for several decades. Application of integrated centralized control systems in buildings could lead to more than 50% energy savings. This research work demonstrates an innovative adaptive integrated lighting control approach which could achieve significant energy savings and increase indoor comfort in high performance office buildings. In the first phase of the study, a predictive algorithm was developed and validated through experiments in an actual test room. The objective was to regulate daylight on a specified work plane by controlling the blind slat angles. Furthermore, a sensor-based integrated adaptive lighting controller was designed in Simulink which included an innovative sensor optimization approach based on genetic algorithm to minimize the number of sensors and efficiently place them in the office. The controller was designed based on simple integral controllers. The objective of developed control algorithm was to improve the illuminance situation in the office through controlling the daylight and electrical lighting. To evaluate the performance of the system, the controller was applied on experimental office model in Lee et al.s research study in 1998. The result of the developed control approach indicate a significantly improvement in lighting situation and 1-23% and 50-78% monthly electrical energy savings in the office model, compared to two static strategies when the blinds were left open and closed during the whole year respectively.
