In artistic terms, it is about rejecting realism, simplifying technique and reducing the formal means of expression to a ‘primitive’ state. The term itself is borrowed from discussions of Western art, where high-profile examples include the images of Tahiti and its people made in the 1890s by Paul Gauguin, and responses to African sculpture by Pablo Picasso in 1906-09. The second thread of primitivism – the reduction of formal means – is best exemplified by the ‘cut-outs’ made by Henri Matisse in the 1940s. Although primitivism in modern Indian art arose partly in response to developments in the West, the meanings and experience of primitivism in the Indian context must differ markedly. In the first place, the West was reacting to civilisations very different from their own, including in Asia, but what was exotic to them was already familiar to artists in India. And secondly, despite the best efforts of the colonial art schools, the naturalistic conventions of post-Renaissance art were far less deeply entrenched in India, and were thus more easily overturned. For many, the ‘return’ to the primitive meant a revival of the local. While Western artists went in search of an elusive, idealised ‘noble savage’, urban Indian artists, seeking to assert their authentic identity, drew inspiration from the least colonised segments of their own society. The sixteen artists represented in this exhibition together represent a broad spectrum of the ways in which primitivism has manifested itself in modern Indian painting and sculpture. We do not suggest that these artists collectively represent the whole of Indian primitivism, nor that primitivism represents the whole of what each of them did. Primitivism is a trait, not a bounded set: there was no manifesto that these or other artists signed, or self-declared group that they joined. It is a treatment that becomes apparent in varying degrees and ways. Indeed, in so far as primitivism is part of the condition of modernity, we could have chosen almost anyone. Raghubir Singhs photographs in The Home and the World focus on the Ambassador, the iconic car inherited from the British. In these photographs, shot mostly in the last years of his life, the doors and windshield of the car become the frame to the image. In some, black planes block out large parts of the image; the result is a series of almost abstract photographs. Dayanita Singhs work is taken from two recent Steidl books. In Go Away Closer Singh considers opposites in India: presence and absence, reality and dreams, tradition and progress. Such opposites are ultimately irreconcilable, as embodied by the paradox of the books title. Singh embraces this uncertainty, and presents visual clues in her photographs into which the viewer can read his or her own biography. Sent A Letter brings together seven of Singhs small photo journals of her travels in India over recent years. Each book was made with a certain person in mind, either someone she has made the journey with or that was on her mind on her travels. The diaries are in accordion folds and each opens into a mini private exhibition.

Dayanita Singh (born 1961) is a book artist who stretches the imagination of what a book can be, transcending the spaces between publishing and art. Book Building traces the journeys of Singh's books, from the first, Zakir Hussain (1986), to her latest, Zakir Hussain Maquette (2019), showing the spectrum of her book-building process from idea to material object, and how she inventively circulates them in the art world and beyond. Taking those books she has made with Steidl as a basis, we witness the transformation of books into book-objects which open up new interpretative spaces: Museum of Chance (2014), for example, first became a book-object, then a diptych, a bookcase, a suitcase museum and a book museum, before finally becoming the ongoing museum in Singh's Museum Bhavan (2017). Book Building documents Singh's 13 books in images and short texts, along with several DIYs Singh has created with detailed instructions on how to display her books as exhibitions--making us the curators--as well as various performative interventions, from book carts and happenings to installations and tours. At the heart of Book Building is the collaborative process that Dayanita Singh and Gerhard Steidl have established over 20 years: the belief that a book is always in a process of becoming.
