Book excerpt: What if the presence of God became so real in people's hearts that it revived the church and ushered in the next Jesus Movement? From the Upper Room in Jerusalem to the Moravian community in Germany, God's personal presence always changes everything. Awaken the Dawn chronicles the story of a movement of day-and-night worship, prayer, creativity, and mission that is impacting America and the nations by bringing the presence of God into our cities and campuses. This story is part of the same movement David pioneered when he served as the greatest king in Israel's history and that the Book of Acts chronicles as God's presence filled communities. It's time for a generation to find their voice in the symphony of creative worship, prayer, and gospel proclamation that God is orchestrating. Jesus' way of changing the world is surprising and exhilarating and is certainly the opposite of the systems of the world. This book will help you find your part in Jesus' plan by discussing: What God's presence is and how it changes our hearts Incredible stories of God's activity in the nation and what He is saying through them God's values and how He brings transformation and mercy Why Jesus is central to all that the Holy Spirit is doing This book will equip you to be a part of Jesus' astounding storyline for a great spiritual awakening. It will give you hope and keys on how God is unfolding his mission of mercy and transformation and how you can be a part of it.

Book Numinous Awareness Is Never Dark

Download or read book Numinous Awareness Is Never Dark written by and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numinous Awareness Is Never Dark examines the issue of whether enlightenment in Zen Buddhism is sudden or gradual—that is, something intrinsic to the mind that is achieved in a sudden flash of insight or something extrinsic to it that must be developed through a sequential series of practices. This “sudden/gradual issue” was one of the crucial debates that helped forge the Zen school in East Asia, and the Korean Zen master Chinul’s (1158–1210) magnum opus, Excerpts, offers one of the most thorough treatments of it in all of premodern Buddhist literature. According to Chinul’s analysis, enlightenment is both sudden and gradual. Zen practice must begin with a sudden awakening to the “numinous awareness”—the “sentience,” or buddha-nature—that is inherent in all “sentient” beings. Such an awareness does not need to be developed but must simply be recognized (or better “re-cognized”), through the unmediated experience of insight. Even after this initial awakening, however, deeply engrained proclivities of thought and conduct may continue to disturb the practitioner; these can only be removed gradually as his or her practice matures. Chinul’s “sudden awakening/gradual cultivation” soteriology became emblematic of the Buddhist tradition in Korea. Excerpts, translated here in its entirety by the preeminent Western specialist in the Korean Buddhist tradition, goes on to examine Chinul’s treatments of many of the quintessential practices of Zen Buddhism, including nonconceptualization, or no-thought, and the concurrent development of meditation and wisdom, as well as, for the first time in Korean Zen, “examining meditative topics” (kanhwa Sŏn)—what we in the West know better as kōans, after its later Japanese analogues. Fitting this new technique into his preferred soteriological schema of sudden awakening/gradual cultivation was no simple task for Chinul. Numinous Awareness Is Never Dark offers an extensive study of the contours of the sudden/gradual debate in Buddhist thought and practice and traces the influence of Chinul’s analysis of this issue throughout the history of the Korean tradition. Copiously annotated, the work contains extensive selections from the two traditional Korean commentaries to the text. In Buswell’s treatment, Chinul’s Excerpts emerges as the single most influential work written by a Korean Buddhist author.

Book Performing Knowledge

  • Author : Daphne Leong

  • Release : 2019-11-19
  • ISBN : 0190653558

Download or read book Performing Knowledge written by Daphne Leong and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do musical analysis and performance relate? In a unique collaborative approach to this question, theorist-pianist Daphne Leong partners with internationally renowned performers to interpret twentieth-century repertoire. Imaginative explorations of music by Ravel, Schoenberg, Bartók, Schnittke, Milhaud, Messiaen, Babbitt, Carter, and Morris illuminate focal issues such as the role of embodiment, the affordances of a score, the cultural understanding of notation, the use of metaphor, and--to round out the viewpoints of theorist and performers with those of composer and listeners--the role of structure in audience reception. Each exploration engages deeply with musical structure, redefined to encompass the creative activity of composers, performers, analysts, and listeners. Performances, demonstrations, and interviews online complement the book's written text; practical application and pedagogical guidance round out theoretical and analytical content. The collaborations themselves demonstrate different dimensions of knowledge at the intersection of analysis and performance, and illustrate Leong's theory of the things and people that facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration in music. They also exemplify the antagonisms and synergies that emerge when theorists and performers meet. Both flexibly and rigorously conceived, Performing Knowledge is a brave crossing of disciplinary divides between scholarship and practice, a work of analysis shaped by the voices of performers.

Book At the Heart of the Universe

Download or read book At the Heart of the Universe written by Samuel Shem and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of two mothers and a father in love with the same daughter, Samuel Shem's At the Heart of the Universe is an epic novel set deep in rural China against the backdrop of an ancient mountain monastery during the time of the one-child-per-family policy. Inspired by the author's experiences as parent of an adopted child, it describes the drama of adoption and the journey of loss and rebirth that can happen when a daughter brings together her adopted mother and father with her birth mother high on a mountaintop. Set in 1991 in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, as a Chinese woman abandons her one-month-old daughter in a pile of celery in a busy market, and then shifting to Changsha ten years later as the daughter returns with her adopted American parents, the story moves across southern China until, high atop Emei San, one of China's "sacred mountains" with a Buddhist temple, the four are brought together in the wilderness—a perilous and explosive time that unleashes their heartbreak and suffering and, remarkably, transcends it to shared compassion, and new beginnings.

Book excerpt: Faith is the Path Grace is the Bridge Surrender is the Gate Love is the Garden "Over the course of more years than I care to admit, I've been witness to Kristina's multi-faceted talents as actress, musician, writer, composer, fellow spiritual seeker and dear friend. of all of her worthy endeavors, perhaps most compelling is her poetry. It is a reflection of her soul; an out-picturing of her inner and outer travels and, as such, a daily mantra of a visionary creative spirit; an expression for you to share and experience with her in consciousness. Mystic Wayfarer, One Soul's Journey Into Light is powerful, purposeful, intimate, and, like Kristina herself, utterly unique in its power to alter your world. It is profoundly personal, yet it reveals a recognizable, emergent collective wisdom. As you revel in each stanza, you are invited to delight in your own quest for ecstasy, seeking union with the Divine through a discovery of your own unfolding divinity, held in each painful, joyful, cherished moment of humanness." ~ Donna Walker, Host/Producer Pacifica Performance Showcase, KPFK 90.7 FM, Pacifica Radio. "Within the rhythm of her excellent poesy, Kristina Sanborn walks us through a life well-earned. One wants to travel with each individual poem in a front pocket, and take it out to look at its map - which means there will be the pleasure of dancing through its theme once more - and then satisfied, ready oneself for the adventure of the following stride. and though they each stand on their own, I found the collection of poems to be mighty and muscular when read in a conscious promenade, for the complete work engages the reader's mind to an insistent and necessary wayfaring, a forward motion, a need. The prize is a most certain peace of mind, as her beautiful images leap up and encircle you on your walk - like luminous autumn leaves in a very brave wind." ~ Randall Stuart, Founder & Director of CERIMON HOUSE, A Sanctuary for the Humanities "Kristina's poetry, in her new book Mystic Wayfarer, moves in the serpentine ways of women's mystery. Seeping into the soul and dancing you from the inside out. Her journey carries you to places near and far, inside and out and brings you back to the home of your own body with infinite grace and beauty. It has been a joy and a privilege to bear witness to her journey and dance in the mystery with her. May others come to find as much joy, pleasure and value in her words as I have."~ Sandy Pendleton, MFT, Teacher and Coach, Embodied Wisdom
