Book excerpt: Named for famed Revolutionary war hero General William Lee Davidson, Davidson County enjoys a rich heritage in the heartland of North Carolina's piedmont region, one that combines engaging personalities, charming small towns, a taste for fine barbecue, and world-famous furniture craftsmanship. This volume, with over 200 black-and-white photographs, takes readers on a visual tour of Davidson County over the past two centuries, a time of dramatic change when the county evolved from simple agrarian-based villages into towns swelling with industry. Davidson County allows readers to explore their history as never before, including early scenes of the Court Square, the steadfast facades of the Uptown Lexington Historic District, the famed first "Big Chair" in Thomasville, and a collection of national celebrities that visited different parts of the county--Hop Along Cassidy, Ty Cobb, and Elvis Presley. However, it is not the homes and buildings that make a place special, but its people. This pictorial retrospective features the stories and images of everyday life in the county, showcasing residents in the local classroom, workplace, and "out and about" in the county enjoying its beautiful landscape.

Book Wicked Lexington North Carolina

Download or read book Wicked Lexington North Carolina written by Alice E. Sink and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled within the heart of North Carolina's Piedmont lies Lexington, a town with a history so iniquitous that few dare to tell the tales. Discover how a veritably unknown young singer named Elvis Presley wiggled and gyrated his way through town, and how the Jolly Black Widow claimed her third husband (and victim) in a string of doomed love affairs. It was here in Lexington that an obscene mail menace sent hundreds of depraved letters to wholesome families, and on a sleepy summer day, police seized nine barrels of illicit liquor only to be stolen back and imbibed by the original owners that night. Travel with local author Alice Sink down the streets of old-time Lexington to view a city riddled with all manner of unsavory deeds.

Book 1770 1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements

Download or read book 1770 1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1987 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest surviving federal enumerations of the Tennessee Country consist of the 1810 census of Rutherford County and an incomplete 1820 census. But since the first settlers arrived at the French Lick as early as 1779, the first forty years of settlement in the area we now call Tennessee are a blank, at least in the official enumerations. This work is an attempt to reconstruct a census of the Cumberland River settlements in Davidson, Sumner, and Tennessee counties, which today comprise all or part of forty Tennessee counties. To this end, Mr. Fulcher has abstracted from the public records all references to those living in the jurisdictions between 1770 and 1790. From wills, deeds, court minutes, marriage records, military records, and many related items, the author has put together a carefully documented list of inhabitants--virtually the "first" census of Tennessee.
