Book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel

Download or read book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book King David Innocent Blood and Bloodguilt

Download or read book King David Innocent Blood and Bloodguilt written by David J. Shepherd and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the characters bequeathed to us by the Hebrew Bible, none is more compelling or complex than David. Divinely blessed, musically gifted, brave, and eloquent, David's famous slaying of Goliath also confirms that he is a redoubtable man of war. Yet, when his son Absalom rebels, David is dogged by the accusation than he will lose his kingdom because he is not merely a man of war, but a man of 'bloods' - guilty of shedding innocent blood. In this book, for the first time, this language of 'innocent blood' and 'bloodguilt' is traced throughout David's story in the books of Samuel and 1 Kings. The theme emerges initially in Saul's pursuit of David and resurfaces regularly as David rises and men like Nabal, Saul, Ishbosheth, and Abner fall. Innocent blood and bloodguilt also turn out to be central to David's reign. This is seen in a surprising way in David's killing of Uriah, but also in the subsequent deaths of his sons, Amnon and Absalom, his general, Amasa, and even in David's encounters with Shimei. The problem rears its head again when the innocent blood of the Gibeonites shed by Saul comes back to haunt David's kingdom. Finally, the problem reappears when Solomon succeeds David and orchestrates the executions of Joab and Shimei, and the exile of Abiathar. Attending carefully to the text and drawing extensively on previous biblical scholarship, David J. Shepherd suggests that innocent blood is not only a pre-eminent concern of David, and his story in Samuel and 1 Kings, but also shapes the entirety of David's history.

He shepherded both sheep and people. He was an empire builder but a failed parent. He was an adulterer and a murderer. He was a warrior and an outlaw. He was a musician, composing beautiful psalms still treasured and sung today. His name appears more than a thousand times in the Bible, more than any other individual. Above all, he was faithful to his calling as the mashiach, the anointed one of the Lord God.

Book excerpt: This Scripture Adventure is a journey through David's life and his reign as king, a reign with its ups and downs, failures and successes. More than a list of historical facts, David's life and legacy provide us with several life lessons, lessons that can serve to guide us daily, even moment by moment, whether we are serving only as "king" over ourselves or as leader over many. There are many "kingdoms" one can successfully rule or one can fail to rule. Which "kingdoms"? The "kingdoms" of "self" (with its many areas), as well as of home, church, school, a team, a neighborhood or community, a region, even a nation. Here are some crucial facts when looking at David or any other leader: simply knowing his successes will not make us successful. Nor will knowing his failures keep us from failing, but we can learn. Here is an important truth: one does not have to fail personally; one can learn from others' failures and one does not have to succeed in the same way as other "kings" or leaders. When all is said and done, the crucial questions are these: "Have I pleased the Lord?" "Have I followed Him and His Word?" "Have I helped others connect with Him to know and follow Him?" "Have I helped others through their life journey?" David certainly knew the Lord, sought to follow Him and sought to get others to follow Him and His Word. We can learn from David, from his stands and his stumbles, his successes, and failures. After all, it ever remains a matter of the heart--seeking God's heart as well as learning from David's heart for each of our hearts.

Book excerpt: The words in the title, You Are the Man, convicted a deeply guilty King David of the heinous crimes he had committed against Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba's husband. Yet, in many remarkable ways, David was God's man, chosen and blessed for greatness. This book tells a story of David's life from the Bible read as literally true. The flowing, easy-to-read narrative observes him progress from shepherd to king to his death. Walking with David through tragedy and triumph makes it easier to see the actual person behind this larger-than-life Bible character. "A fresh approach to the life of David." Pastor Tim Murdoch While David's sins and difficulties are not ignored, King David: You Are the Man highlights several positive events, including some lesser-known ones found only I Chronicles. King David was the man - whom God chose to be ancient Israel's second king, - who established daily praise and worship of God in Israel, - to whom God revealed eternal purposes for His Son and His kingdom, - who led Israel to an exalted place among the nations, - to whom God revealed the details of the temple Solomon would build, and - who organized the priests and Levites in their ministries of worship at that temple. "I feel as if I am getting to know David, and more than that, his faith. As a woman of faith, it sings to my heart .... I feel as if I am getting to know God better too " Halin I Soaring Included in this narration of David's life are - a history of the Ark of the Covenant, - a possible timeline of David's life, - a probe into the disastrous census that David ordered to be taken, (When considering the difficult questions posed by II Samuel 24:1 and I Chronicles 21:1, Pastor Mike Green expressed this credible idea: "I think God was angry with Israel because the tabernacle was in Gibeon.") - a history of the Levites and their development as God's special servants, and - several specific life disciplines that made David a man after God's own heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably one of the most well- known characters in the Bible is David. He grew up a shepherd boy and defeated a giant named Goliath and then went on to be King of Israel. While king, David made some serious mistakes. However, David didn't try to place the blame on other people. He took responsibility and shouldered the blame himself. By doing this, he was described by God as a "man after His own heart." In this book, you will learn that God has a good plan for every individual. But sometimes you can thwart that plan by your own desire to fulfill certain desires and dreams but God's grace can bring you back to the plan that God has for you. Even though David made some mistakes and even cost people their lives, he repented and was able to turn the direction of those mistakes to want to serve the Lord. God's grace is evident through the entire life of David. Rather than having to go through your own hard knocks, the author encourages the reader to learn from these life lessons from David

Download or read book Book of David written by David Steinberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning comedian, director, writer, and producer David Steinberg comes the totally original, utterly blasphemous, and hysterically funny memoir of a young man who emerged from a traditional Jewish childhood to become an international star—all because, it seems, he kept God in stitches. David Steinberg was raised in Winnipeg, Canada, by parents who expected little from him. And no wonder. Instead of studying Talmud in order to become a rabbi, he chose to major in Martin and Lewis with a minor in basketball. As David imagines the story of his life (since his success otherwise makes no sense), God one day spotted him on the playground and decided that this young man with no ambition could go far with His help. Sure enough, God soon had David on network TV and Broadway, and selling out nightclubs across the country—as well as being pursued by hot starlets. The Book of David is David Steinberg's hilarious trip down memory lane, assuming that the lane has a biblical address. This wild riff on the Old Testament is guaranteed laughter.
