Book David Maljkovic Also on View

Download or read book David Maljkovic Also on View written by David Maljkovic and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout an ever-shifting body of work, David Maljkovi? returns to ?the question of form,? asking how considerations of form itself might illuminate the ebb and flow of ideologies, for example, or the overlaying of past, present, and future. While embracing a wide range of media?including photography, painting, video, sculpture, and various hybrids?the Croatian artist has developed distinctive methods of incorporating, and refiguring, his own earlier works in new installations.0Along with every exhibition, Maljkovicc translates his work into the form of a book, which becomes another lively medium for the artist. For 'Also on View', he collaborated with designer Toni Uroda to channel the queries of his solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society, which brought together elements from different projects to create a new presentation tailored to the architectural space. The publication features a dynamic array of images, a rendition of the artist talk Maljkovic? delivered on opening night, and an essay by curator Karsten Lund.00Exhibition: The Renaissance Society, Chicago, USA (09.02-07.04.2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the way in which artists from the former Eastern bloc perceive the experience of EU integration and transition from a Soviet past as a conceptual launching pad, this book explores how artists critically inhabit a permanent state of 'in-between' to capture the simultaneous existence of multiple and overlapping temporalities. Transitional aesthetics are artistic strategies that disrupt and interrogate ideologically loaded trajectories of cultural, social, or political transition. Examples of such trajectories include the movement from totalitarianism to democracy (post-socialism), from war to freedom and reconciliation (post-conflict), and from the edges of Europe to its centre (inclusion in the European Union). These transitional states include: the future orientation of (failed) socialism and the perpetual present of global capital; the history of unresolved past conflicts and reconciliation through 'transitional justice'; nationalist obsessions with the past and the cultural appeal of kitsch and retro objects in fashion, film and music; and the uncertain future promise of EU membership and resurgence of global right-wing populism, headed by figures like Berlusconi, Le Pen, and Trump. Transitional Aesthetics shows that apprehending time in contemporary art is fundamental to capturing the lived experience of a permanent state of instability; particularly relevant to Europe in the contemporary moment. In a world that has entered 'accelerated transition' towards instability, understanding this experience has broad and resonating relevance for politics, art and society.

Book David Maljkovi 2003 2013

Download or read book David Maljkovi 2003 2013 written by Konrad Bitterli and published by Moderne Kunst Verlag Fur. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scene for new heritage 1 was the title of an impressive filmic work by David Maljkovic dating from 2004. In this work, the artist, who was born in 1973 in Rijeka, Croatia, and now lives in Zagreb, gets to grips with the political legacy of former Yugoslavia and the utopias of a bygone era.The economic and cultural changes associated with the collapse of the Communist social order and its transformation into a Capitalist social system form the background to his idiosyncratic oeuvre which fundamentally questions the methods of narrative construction and uses as its subject matter the translation of content into an artistic work or the latter's presentation in the institutional context. On the occasion of his solo exhibition at Lokremise in St.Gallen, now, for the first time, David Maljkovic has assembled his recent collages in a concentrated form in an art book designed by Toni Uroda.English and German text.

Book excerpt: For the past 15 years, David Maljkovic has been fascinated with the French car company Peugeot and its futuristic concept cars conceived in the 1980s to modelize what the car industry would look like in the 2000s--now evidence of a long outdated belief in progress and technology. In his film Out of Projection (2009-2015), filmed at the Peugeot headquarters and innovation campus in Sochaux (eastern France), automobile prototypes accompanied by now-retired former employees unfurl before us, serving as symbolic links between past and future, and giving us an insight into our complex contemporary relationship with past forms, time, and space. Centred on this landmark work, which is unfolded through related projects, archives, documentation, film stills, etc., this artist's book constitutes an emblematic case study of David Maljkovic's practice and obsessions.Designed by London-based graphic design studio bke, it is published as the editorial sequel of the exhibition In Low Resolution held at Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in 2014, and co-organized with Festival d'Automne (Paris). Besides publishing never-before-seen material, it also contains an essay by curator and art critic Franois Piron, and an interview with Julien Fronsacq, curator of David Maljkovic's exhibition at Palais de Tokyo.Born in 1973 in Croatia, David Maljkovic lives in Zagreb and Berlin. His work, which includes films, sculpture, collage, and installations, develops a critical enquiry into the legacies of modernism, in particular through the architectural symbols and sculptural forms of former socialist Yugoslavia and Eastern Europe. He investigates these remnants from the past in relation to the present, but also in terms of their potential--real or fictional--in an imminent or distant future, at the crossroads between science fiction and documentary film. He is also particularly interested in exhibition strategies and the semiotics of display.Published in collaboration with the Festival d'Automne (Paris). English and French text

Book Museums Narratives and Critical Histories

Download or read book Museums Narratives and Critical Histories written by Kerstin Barndt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-02-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to systemic racism and institutions’ implications in histories of colonialism, nationalism, and exclusion, museum curators have embraced new ways of storytelling to face entangled memories and histories. Critical museum practices have consciously sought to unsettle established forms of representation, break with linear narratives of progress, and experiment with new modes of multivocal, multimedia, and subjective storytelling. The volume features analyses of narratives and narration in museums and heritage institutions today, as well as visions for future museum practices on a local, regional, national, transnational, and global scale. It is divided into three sections: Narrative Theory and Temporality, Ruptures and Repair, and Difficult Memories and Histories. Essays from a variety of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences examine museum practices in history, memorial, anthropological, and art museums across six continents. They develop narratological categories, reflect on immersive and virtual narratives, challenge colonial violence and hegemonic forms of representation, query the performance of heritage, parse exhibition design, and unearth techniques to express narratives of social justice.

Book Atmospheres of Projection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together cultural history, visual studies, and media archaeology, Bruno considers the interrelations of projection, atmosphere, and environment. Projection has long been transforming space, from shadow plays to camera obscuras and magic lantern shows. Our fascination with projection is alive on the walls of museums and galleries and woven into our daily lives. Giuliana Bruno explores the histories of projection and atmosphere in visual culture and their continued importance to contemporary artists who are reinventing the projective imagination with atmospheric thinking and the use of elemental media. To explain our fascination with projection and atmosphere, Bruno traverses psychoanalysis, environmental philosophy, architecture, the history of science, visual art, and moving image culture to see how projective mechanisms and their environments have developed over time. She reveals how atmosphere is formed and mediated, how it can change, and what projection can do to modify a site. In so doing, she gives new life to the alchemic possibilities of transformative projective atmospheres. Showing how their “environmentality” produces sites of exchange and relationality, this book binds art to the ecology of atmosphere.
