Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from David Friedrich Strauss in His Life and Writings Immediately after the death of the man to whose memory the following pages are dedicated, I was requested by the Editor of the 'Swabian Mercury' to write a necrology on him for that journal. This I promised to do, only stipulating to be allowed a somewhat longer time, as other duties prevented me from undertaking it immediately. When, however, I proceeded to the execution of the task, during the last Easter vacation, I became speedily convinced that I could not keep my narrative, without incurring my own utter dissatisfaction with it, either in substance or extent, within the limits involved by its appearance in a daily journal. Book David Friedrich Strau Father of Unbelief

Download or read book David Friedrich Strau Father of Unbelief written by Frederick C. Beiser and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Friedrich Strauss is a central figure in 19th century intellectual history. The first major source for the loss of faith in Christianity in Germany, his work Das Leben Jesu was the most scandalous publication in Germany during his time. His book was a critique of the claims to historical truth of the New Testament, which had been the mainstay of Protestantism since the Reformation. As the father of unbelief, his critique of Christianity preceded that of Nietzsche, Marx, Feuerbach, and Schopenhauer. His views imposed a harsh fate upon him - he was persecuted for his beliefs by religious and political authorities and was denied employment in the university and government, forcing him to live as a free-lance writer. He led a wandering and isolated life as an outcast. Here, Frederick C. Beiser studies the intellectual development of Strauss and recounts his fate, which began in faith as a young man but finally ended in unbelief.

Book Biblical Studies and the Shifting of Paradigms 1850 1914

Download or read book Biblical Studies and the Shifting of Paradigms 1850 1914 written by Graf Henning Reventlow and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the contributions to a symposium in which specialists in different fields worked together in the attempt to throw by their cooperation more light on the conditions - theological convictions and worldview, political climate, influence of state officials, educational institutions and churches - which were influential in the development of biblical studies in the second half of the 19th century. The discussion originated with a special problem: the thesis of William Farmer, one of the co-editors of the volume, that the appointment of Heinrich Julius Holtzmann, who defended the priority of the gospel of Mark as the oldest synoptic gospel, to the New Testament professorship in Strasbourg in 1872 was the result of a direct intervention of the emperial chancellor Bismarck in the context of the kulturkampf, who wished thereby to weaken the Roman Catholic position defending the supremacy of the chair of St Peter by the authority of the gospel of St Matthew (Mt 16,18). The question belongs in the broader context of the presuppositions of Bible exegesis in the second half of the 19th century. As both editors agreed that the matter is not yet finally settled, it seemed to be essential for coming to deeper insights into the conditions under which biblical exegesis was enacted in the 19th century to broaden the scenery and to include other aspects that might throw more light on a period widely unknown to many scholars belonging to the present generation. Therefore specialists of different fields joined a symposium in order to elucidate from their respective viewpoints and interests basic themes and methods of biblical exegesis, scientific theology and the relations between stateand university in the 19th centruy, e
