Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like David. Outlaw. Cave man. Guerrilla. So how does the hero behave under pressure? The subject of this second volume on the life of David is his fugitive years, when his passion for God was stressed to the breaking point. He starts out holding Goliath's severed head and ends up weeping over the death of nemesis Saul and soul mate Jonathan. In between-he runs. At first the battlefield hero wins the hearts of the people and becomes a palace fixture. All is well in King Saul's court-until the women begin singing his praises. Now the rising star is a marked man with a price on his head. Dodging javelins, David succumbs to fear. He resorts to deception. Once he ran toward his enemies; now he runs from them. His only hope-his only help-is God. "The Lord is for me," he writes, "so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?" (Ps. 118:6, NLT). This book is for all who walk through the valley of the shadow, who face the perfect storm of failure and disgrace. Before God can bring us into a spacious place, we must learn what David learned in the dark about God. God delivers. The storm will subside. Goliath will fall. But we must wait on the Lord.

Download or read book Run David Run written by Steven Thatcher Mann and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Steven Mann highlights the role of theology in the story of David's departure and return as told in 2 Samuel 14-20. Mann's method of narrative analysis employs a philosophy of language called speech act theory. His primary interest is ways in which speech act theory has been applied to biblical narrative, and he concentrates specifically on speech acts that include theological propositional content, that is, words used to denote God. In this way, Mann analyzes the theological speech acts of the narrative and then suggests a way to view the narrative itself as a speech act. The thesis of this study is that speech act theory illuminates the integral role of theology in the story of David's departure and return. Theology is not merely one aspect of the story but is in fact a catalyst necessary to the plot. Furthermore, the act of telling the story as 2 Sam 14-20 does is the very act of portraying David's faith in Yhwh. David's speech acts demonstrate that he believes that Yhwh is someone who intervenes and who finds ways to bring his banished ones back to him. The narrative portrayal of David's faith can be understood as an illocutionary act, with the potential effect of encouraging an audience, a perlocutionary act. In other words, Man demonstrates that this story can inspire any readers who see this narrative as a story not only about David but about themselves.

Book How s Your Faith

Download or read book How s Your Faith written by David Gregory and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Join former NBC newsman and Meet the Press moderator David Gregory as he probes various religious traditions to better understand his own faith and answer life's most important questions: who do we want to be and what do we believe? While David was covering the White House, he had the unusual experience of being asked by President George W. Bush "How's your faith?" David's answer was just emerging. Raised by a Catholic mother and a Jewish dad, he had a strong sense of Jewish cultural and ethnic identity, but no real belief--until his marriage to a Protestant woman of strong faith inspired him to explore his spirituality for himself and his growing family. David's journey has taken him inside Christian mega-churches and into the heart of Orthodox Judaism. He's gone deep into Bible study and asked tough questions of America's most thoughtful religious leaders, including evangelical preacher Joel Osteen and Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic Archbishop of New York. It has brought him back to his childhood, where belief in God might have helped him through his mother's struggle with alcoholism, and through a difficult period of public scrutiny and his departure from NBC News, which saw his faith tested like never before. David approaches his faith with the curiosity and dedication you would expect from a journalist accustomed to holding politicians and Presidents accountable. But he also comes as a seeker, one just discovering why spiritual journeys are always worthwhile"--

Book Christians on the Job

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Goetsch
  • Publisher : Salem Books
  • Release : 2019-01-01
  • ISBN : 1621577937
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Christians on the Job written by David Goetsch and published by Salem Books. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Matthew 10:16, Christ advised His Apostles to be "wise" and "innocent" as they go out "in the midst of wolves." This book shows Christians how to be wise and innocent as they work among people who sometimes behave like wolves. Temptation, greed, dishonesty, and misguided ambition have always presented challenges for Christians in the workplace. Add secular bias, political correctness, and persecution to the mix, and the modern workplace becomes a foreboding environment for Christians to navigate. This is so much the case, many Christians wonder if it is still possible to earn a living without compromising their faith. Christians on the Job does more than demonstrate that Christians can stand firm when confronted with faith-related dilemmas in the workplace. It also demonstrates how to go about it. Using concepts illustrated with real-life examples, steps to implement in specific situations, life application questions, and resources for going deeper, Dr. Goetsch draws a clear map to ensure Christians can find their way and thrive on the job.

Book Running with the Grasshoppers

Download or read book Running with the Grasshoppers written by R. Mark Webb and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing on the border of a promise, the ancient Israelites savored every word of the spies who witnessed the wonders of the Promised Land. But between their dream and reality were giant inhabitants. "We felt like grasshoppers next to them, and that's what we looked like to them " The grasshoppers had spoken, and the people were faced with a choice: run with the grasshoppers or trust the promise of God. Each of us face intimidating giants. Our problems have different names, but they are enormous in our eyes. And in their menacing shadows we are grasshoppers. If it was simply a matter of our size or ability, we would lose every time. But God is always bigger. Running with the Grasshoppers is a collection of inspirational devotionals that bring encouragement by focusing on the power of faith through a fresh and insightful look at some familiar (and not so familiar) people from the Bible. How often do we read well-known Bible stories and forget that they were people just like us? They were ordinary people with an extraordinary God. God has provided us with a record of these fellow grasshoppers as examples for our inspiration and encouragement. Through our knowledge of these random expressions of faith we can find the encouragement to help us and others persevere in troubled times. R. Mark Webb is an author who lives in Florida with his wife, Wendy. They are proud parents of two amazing daughters and great son-in-laws. Mark describes his passion for writing as a "fire in my bones that cannot be contained" and has had many opportunities to use his love for word crafting to communicate the truth and encouragement found in God's Word.

Book Mortality and Faith

Download or read book Mortality and Faith written by David Horowitz and published by Regnery. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mortality and Faith is the second half of an autobiography of David Horowitz whose first installment, Radical Son, was published more than twenty years ago. It completes the account of his life from where the first book left off to his seventy-eighth year. In contrast to Radical Son whose focus was his political odyssey, Mortality and Faith was conceived as a meditation on age, and on our common progress towards an end which is both final and opaque. These primal facts affect all we see and do, and force us to answer the questions as to why we are here and where we are going with conjectures that can only be taken on faith. Consequently, an equally important theme of this work is its exploration of the beliefs we embrace to answer these questions, and how the answers impact our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when speaking the truth becomes illegal? That is the question Pastor Pete Holloway faces when California implements the Hate Speech Reparation and Elimination Act. When the San Francisco pastor is threatened with fines, reeducation, and incarceration for violating the state's new hate speech law, he chooses to flee. But from what? Truth? Responsibility? God? Or his own sin? As he struggles to remain one step ahead of the law, Pete is forced to confront his options. Should he join the resistance and fight back, remain on the run until the Draconian law can be overturned, or should he return to take his stand and face the consequences? As he wrestles with his conscience, he discovers things hidden deep in his heart which must be addressed before he can find resolution and peace. Is he courageous enough to confront them, or has his journey been in vain? Endorsements As the voice of Conservative Christian politics in Kansas, I am constantly in the bull’s-eye of today’s Godless cancel culture. Author David Mathews, through his artistic gift Fugitive of Faith, teaches me that I rest comfortably in God’s hands. I know this brilliant book will be an incredible gift to you as well. Simply put, Fugitive of Faith is a glorious journey through the perils of our progressive society and an honor to read. State Senator Mark B. Steffen, M.D. Since all but a handful of states have hate crimes laws on the books, this fictional look at how a Bible-believing pastor might deal with being accused of violating the law and face both criminal charges and devastating real world effects is especially relevant. As recent events in Canada clearly illustrate, a day of reckoning for members of the clergy may not be as far away as some Christians believe it to be. Fugitive of Faith will serve as a catalyst for soul searching and spark spirited discussion for Christians in all walks of life! Courtney Montgomery Political blogger at The Cerebral Conservative
