This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Blaize and the Blue Door is set in David's early childhood. It is a fantasy adventure in the style of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, set in a dream landscape permeated with jabberwocky type nonsense. The book is in the same children’s fantasy genre as Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”, “Sylvie and Bruno”, Farrow’s “Adventures Wallypugland series” and Heath Robinson’s “Bill the Minder.” The eight chapters in this book are richly illustrated, and the titles of these give clues to the type of adventure David goes on. Some of the illustrations are titled: “The flame-cats and the black man coming down the chimney”, “The game-cupboard comes to life”, “David finds the mint-man in the bank”, “The recovering of Uncle Popacatapetl”, “The telegram rescues Uncle P. From the mint-man”, “Miss Bones sitting on David’s thumb”, “David uses the telephone in the cow porter’s tail” “Noah pursues David”; and many more whacky characters with equally more strange characteristics. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book is donated to charities. ================ TAGS & KEYWORDS: David Blaize, Blue door, dream, dreamscape, dreamland, sword, bumpity, bottom, adventures, aeroplanes, delicious, candidate, extraordinary, beastly, sir sirloin, london, gold, spectacles, butt, duke, cats whiskers, chimney, telegram, airmen, butler, chauffeur, certificate, fireman, shoemaker, golden, porter, rhyme, gentleman, canon, sovereign, rook, ark, elephant, train, birds, bones, popacatapetl, spider, david blaize, giraffe, miss muffet, brigadier general, noah, Flame cats, black man, chimney, Blue Door, games cupboard, Mint man, bank, Uncle, Rhyme family, Miss Bones, cow porter, bald-headed, lark-flight, Field-Marshal, guard of honour, trout, registry office, marriage

Book excerpt: E.F. Benson's delightfully nostalgic classic of public school life is in the tradition of P.G. Wodehouse's Tales of St. Austin's. Memorably evoking the joys and torments of boyhood, from midnight feasts and glorious days on the cricket field to waxy masters and hilariously embarrassing parental visits, Benson follows young David Blaize from prep school to Marchester Collete - a thinly disguised portrait of the author's own beloved Marlborough. Affectionate, richly comic, and laced with E.F. Benson's inimitable wit, David Blaize is a marvellous entertainment from one of the century's greatest humorous writers. (Renee Manley)
Download or read book Children s Fiction 1900 1950 written by John Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume explores how the genre of school stories had become firmly established by the turn of the twentieth century, having been built on the foundations laid by writers such as Thomas Hughes and F.W. Farrar. Stories for girls were also taking on a more exciting complexion, inspired by the ‘Katy’ books of Susan Coolidge. The first five decades of the twentieth century saw further developments in children’s fiction. In this comprehensive volume, John and Jonathan Cooper examine each decade in turn, with alphabetically arranged entries on popular children’s writers that published works in English during that period. 206 different authors are covered, many from the United States and Canada. Each entry provides information on the author’s pseudonyms, date of birth, nationality, titles of works, place and date of publication and the publisher’s name. The artist responsible for a book’s illustrations is also identified where possible. With over 200 illustrations of cover designs and dustwrappers, many of which are now rare and have never before been published, this book will delight collectors, dealers, scholars, librarians, parents and all those who simply enjoy reading children’s fiction.

They are quite unlikable, mainly upper-middle-class English people who came to the Spa to cure their body illnesses, but also to fill the time and escape boredom despite having no passions, interests and work. Edward Frederic Benson (1867–1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories.

Download or read book Male Homosexuality in Children s Literature 1867 1918 written by Eric L. Tribunella and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1908 cultural and historical study of homosexuality titled The Intersexes: A History of Similisexualism as a Problem in Social Life, Edward Irenæus Prime-Stevenson includes a section on homosexual juvenile fiction, perhaps the first attempt to identify a body of children’s literature about male homosexuality in English. Known for pioneering the explicitly gay American novel for adults, Stevenson was also one of the first thinkers to take seriously the possibility and value of homosexual children, whom he called "young Uranians." This book takes as its starting point Stevenson’s catalog of homosexual boy books around the turn of the century and offers a critical examination of these works, along with others by gay writers who wrote for children from the mid-nineteenth century through the end of World War I. Stevenson’s list includes Eduard Bertz, Howard Sturgis, Horace Vachell, and Stevenson himself—to which Horatio Alger, John Gambril Nicholson, and E.F. Benson are added. Read alongside major developments in English- and German-language sexology, these boy books can be understood as participating in the construction and dissemination of the discourse of sexuality and as constituting the figure of the young Uranian as central to modern gay identity.
