Book excerpt: What's Left organizes research materials and speculative proposals relating to Bailey's project "What's left to its own devices (On reclamation)" for Casco, Office for Art, Design and Theory in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The book resists traditional categorization, but could be said to present a highly experimental geography which begins with the role of hydrological processes in creating specific spaces of sociability and private retreat. Through this lens, it cross-correlates the historic city of Utrecht and "Slab City", an ad hoc squatters' camp in the California desert. The mixed narratives of individual freedom and communal living associated with the latter find structural echoes in the wharves of Utrecht. These privately colonized public spaces are unique in the world, and exist only through an almost accidental intersection: that of the city's topography (it is one of the few larger Dutch cities slightly above sea level) and the collective task of managing the regional system of canals to protect low-lying areas (the "water boards" responsible for this task are frequently cited as the first form of democratic political organization in Europe). Micro-sites in both places are further drawn together using non-linear heuristic methods to forge links across a range of subjects: The Rietveld Schröder House, history of the Colorado River and Imperial Irrigation District, sedimentation and accumulation, delta formation, water diversion structures, barricades as tools of spatial control, DIY culture, the social functions of books and libraries, etc. Additional essays by Emily Pethick, Jan Tumlir, and Lars Bang Larsen examine the project and contextualize it against Bailey's broader practice. Book excerpt: CityCat Project 20062016 documents the extraordinary 10-year collaboration between California artist Dave Hullfish Bailey (b. 1963) and senior Aboriginal writer and activist Sam Watson (b. 1952). Structured around the Maiwar Performance, for which CityCat ferries on the Brisbane River execute unannounced maneuvers near a 19th-century Aboriginal site, the performance has been restaged over the years as an act of indigenous empowerment. The subject of this slender publication is an evolving body of playful, yet politically and intellectually resistant works in diverse media reflecting the call-and-response collaboration between Watson and Bailey. CityCat Project curator David Pestorius contributes an essay and detailed timeline on the activities of Bailey and Watson before and throughout their collaboration. Art historian Sally Butler reflects upon Watsons literary production and curator Michele Helmrich sheds light on the local historical context that significantly informs the collaboration. The twelfth edition of Casco Issues, Generous Structures, is a playful enquiry into "playfulness" as a value in critical cultural practice. It positions alternative notions of playing against the grain of neoliberal ideologies of "lifelong learning" and "work as play." By taking the idea of playing and the metaphor of the game as a starting point, the publication addresses what might be called a "ludic turn"--the impact of the notion of play and gaming methods in various research fields and cultural work. Most prominent in the Internet industries and interactive media landscapes, but also in theoretical reflections, historical research, and the work of artists and designers, we are experiencing an interest in play as an educational tool or model for participation. However, with the conscious exception of the game per se, the publication attempts to trace its current impact and critical capacity, and explores various notions as well as concrete modes of play including activities such as learning, sharing, and group work, in relation to space, art, and design. It is driven from a methodological interest in the structure of playing, in its dialectics of rules and possibilities, planning and non-planning, collectivity and individuality. A game, in this sense, is not only characterized by its rules--or, on the contrary, by the liberty of the playing individuals--but is rather a construction of conscious interaction, application and transgression.
