Book Daughters of Justice Darkness of Dawn

Download or read book Daughters of Justice Darkness of Dawn written by Freya Gray and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-05 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part 2 of the book series I've written for Daughters of Justice. The first book I wrote was, "13 Daughters; Daughters of Justice", this second book features most of the same characters. They face a group of evil Greek goddesses in a long and great battle. Will they win? Or will thy lose, as the good don't always win, maybe they do maybe they don't. You'll have to read it to know for sure. Who knows, they may lose and have to have a third book to explain everything, or win and have the same outcome. If you love girl power or just girls that kick butt, you will love this book I can almost guarantee that. There's lots of action and adventure and some mystery thrown in here too. Also, if you like anime, super heroes or mythology, then you should definitely love this and definitely read it. My goal for this book is to please all readers, a little bit of love, comedy, cruel humor, thriller, scy-fi and more, just to please all readers. There are a few minor swears in the book, just so you know. But nothing anyone of the age 12 or older can't handle. There are a few pictures at the end of the book too, for anyone that really wants to know how the characters look in full form off of the cover. I hope you enjoy this book. Thank you!

Download or read book Gateway to Justice written by Jennifer Ann Trost and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Juvenile Court of Memphis, founded in 1910, directed delinquent and dependent children into a variety of private charitable organizations and public correctional facilities. Drawing on the court's case files and other primary sources, Jennifer Trost explains the complex interactions between parents, children, and welfare officials in the urban South. Trost adds a personal dimension to her study by focusing on the people who appeared before the court-and not only on the legal specifics of their cases. Directed for thirty years by the charismatic and well-known chief judge Camille Kelley, the court was at once a traditional house of justice, a social services provider, an agent of state control, and a community-based mediator. Because the court saw boys and girls, blacks and whites, native Memphians and newly arrived residents with rural backgrounds, Trost is able to make subtle points about differences in these clients' experiences with the court. Those differences, she shows, were defined by the mix of Progressive and traditional attitudes that the involved parties held toward issues of class, race, and gender. Trost's insights are all the more valuable because the Memphis court had a large African American clientele. In addition, the court's jurisdiction extended beyond children engaged in criminal or otherwise unacceptable conduct to include those who suffered from neglect, abuse, or poverty. A work of legal history animated by questions more commonly posed by social historians, Gateway to Justice will engage anyone interested in how the early welfare state shaped, and was shaped by, tensions between public standards and private practices of parenting, sexuality, and race relations.

Book excerpt: Now over twenty years old, the original edition of Nightmare Movies has retained its place as a true classic of cult film criticism. In this new edition, Kim Newman brings his seminal work completely up-to-date, both reassessing his earlier evaluations and adding a second part that assess the last two decades of horror films with all the wit, intelligence and insight for which he is known. Since the publication of the first edition, horror has been on a gradual upswing, and taken a new and stronger hold over the film industry. Newman negotiates his way through a vast back-catalogue of horror, charting the on-screen progress of our collective fears and bogeymen from the low budget slasher movies of the 60s, through to the slick releases of the 2000s, in a critical appraisal that doubles up as a genealogical study of contemporary horror and its forebears. Newman invokes the figures that fuel the ongoing demand for horror - the serial killer; the vampire; the werewolf; the zombie - and draws on his remarkable knowledge of the genre to give us a comprehensive overview of the modern myths that have shaped the imagination of multiple generations of cinema-goers. Nightmare Movies is an invaluable companion that not only provides a newly updated history of the darker side of film but a truly entertaining guide with which to discover the less well-trodden paths of horror, and re-discover the classics with a newly instructed eye.

Book excerpt: In The Ecological Thought, eco-philosopher Timothy Morton has argued for the inclusion of “dark ecology” in our thinking about nature. Dark ecology, he argues, puts hesitation, uncertainty, irony, and thoughtfulness back into ecological thinking.” The ecological thought, he says, should include “negativity and irony, ugliness and horror.” Focusing on this concept of “dark ecology” and its invitation to add an anti-pastoral perspective to ecocriticism, this collection of essays on American literature and culture offers examples of how a vision of nature’s darker side can create a fuller understanding of humanity’s relation to nature. Included are essays on canonical American literature, on new voices in American literature, and on non-print American media. This is the first collection of essays applying the “dark ecology” principle to American literature.

Book excerpt: How much guilt can a man endure? How much depravity can a man display? These questions are examined in the fresh new novel, The Darkness at Dawn, set in early New England. When 13-year-old John Lee sees 19-year-old Richard Hawkes, already a petty thief and murderer, steal his Puritan church's gold inlaid chalice during a storm in the middle of the Atlantic on their congregation's journey to Boston, he has no idea that it would be followed by a 40 year conflict between them. Sworn to secrecy by Richard, John's guilt grows over the years as he watches Richard commit vile acts in his effort to increase his power and wealth. Meanwhile, John becomes a soldier, scout, civic leader, and Indian teacher. All the while, his guilt over his oath grows as he blames himself for unleashing Richard's evil upon his community. At the same time, he believes breaking his oath would be a great sin. Finally, when Richard's crimes are too great to ignore, John, a former constable, is asked by the Governor to prosecute Richard for them. In an incredible act of hubris, Richard calls John as a character witness at trial. Confronted with a question he cannot answer without violating either his oath to God or his oath to the Court, he remembers his most spiritual Indian student's statement of how he resolved his conflict between his belief in God and his loyalty to his tribe, and John finds a way to answer.
