Book excerpt: The daughter of esteemed writer Paula Fox and the mother of Courtney Love relates “the curse of the first-born daughter” that has haunted four generations of her family As an adopted child, Linda Carroll created a magical world of her own, made up of dramatic adventures and the abiding fantasy that her real mother would come and take her away. When she finds herself pregnant at the age of eighteen, she is determined to have the perfect understanding with her child that she lacked with her adoptive mother. But readers will know better, for that baby grows up to be Courtney Love, desperately attention-seeking, deeply troubled, and one of the most talented women in rock. Even as a baby, Courtney is beset by mood swings that no doctor can explain or cure. Her dark moods and paranoia escalate as she grows up, driving mother and daughter apart. When Courtney has a daughter of her own, Linda finally decides to find her own biological mother, and end the estrangement of generations of first-born daughters. Her Mother’s Daughter is Linda Carroll’s story of self-discovery as an adopted daughter, a childlike hippie mother, and a woman determined to find herself before finding her roots. Set apart from the typical celebrity memoir by Carroll’s gifted storytelling, Her Mother’s Daughter gives a fresh perspective on the elusive yet enduring connections between mothers and daughters, and reveals the true history of the wildly confabulatory Courtney Love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Maa was standing silently at the window. She seemed to have left everything to God. Her eyes were wide, and it looked as if she had forgotten to blink. Though her lips were not moving, she seemed to be saying something to me through her eyes. She was looking intently at her daughter. She seemed as if she wanted to sweep me in her arms and kiss my forehead, cheeks and head but there was huge wall between us. Perhaps she was trying to say to me to exchange our places. Perhaps she wanted to take away my pain—my tears—but the wall, a literal one, was between us." A Rajasthani girl, Meera Rajpurohit, expresses the most painful moments of her life. Meera has everything—looks, wealth, a loving family and her horse, Kaali. She speaks of how she came back after touching death. Meera speaks about her love life with Kunal whom she was going to marry but Kunal, on the day of the marriage, stops his cars and talks to Meera on phone, and says he does not want to marry her, and goes back. The world stops for Meera; she tries to kill herself. She locks herself in a room but when she tries to kill herself, she loses her mother instead. Meera expresses her feelings about being a girl in very painful words. There is a mystery behind Meera’s horse Kaali, who has ties to Dubai. The story is a saga of love and emotions.

Book excerpt: Every life has a tale to tell. However the sad point is that in most cases there is no one to communicate it to the world at large. Maa is an absolutely authentic, transparent and honest memoir of my mother but it is certainly not something to be kept personal and not public because the story and the learning it contains is immense and that is very much essential for each and every such woman of this country at least who believe that their family is more important than they themselves. It is learning for every such woman who digest many unpalatable events in their life with a pinch of agony thinking there will be better times ahead and thus losing out on life and what it has to offer. Maa tracks the journey of my mother since her birth and the important events that take place in her life. How her life keeps molding for the worse with the passage of time and finally how circumstances disallow her to lead a decent and peaceful life.

Book Youth and Experiences of Ageing among Maa

Download or read book Youth and Experiences of Ageing among Maa written by Paul Spencer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Maa of East Africa are a cluster of related pastoral peoples who share a social organization based on age. This groups men into life-long cohorts from their initiation in youth, regardless of family wealth. Historically, this type of pre-market society has been described in every continent, but East Africa provides the principal surviving region of age-based societies, among whom the Maasai are the best known. In this volume, comparison between three branches of Maa highlights different aspects of their society: the dynamics of power with age and gender among the Maasai, of ritual performance and belief among the Samburu, and of historical change among the Chamus. Here it is argued that understanding another culture can only be approached through models derived in the first instance from the representations conveyed by members of that culture. The social anthropologist may then elaborate these images through the choice of analytical parallels, even extending to other disciplines and personal experience. Each chapter in this volume views Maa institutions through a different lens, exploring models relevant to a comprehensive analysis of their social life.

Of interest too is critique of government and non-government activities in this arena and how technology can be harnessed to respond to harm. Domestic and family violence (DFV) is widely recognised as an important social issue, impacting the safety and wellbeing of victim/survivors and their children, and on a broader scale, threatening risk and security on global levels. This book provides insights drawn from research and practice in the Global South and Global North to provide an evidence base and real-world solutions and initiatives to understand, address and ultimately prevent technology-facilitated domestic and family violence and how technology can be used to effect positive change and empower victim/survivors and communities. Technology and Domestic and Family Violence will be of great interest to students and scholars on victimology, criminology, social work, law, women’s studies, sociology and media studies. It will also be a valuable reference for practitioners, government and non-government advocates working on issues around domestic violence.
