This book was released on 1997 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 7OO foot array of horizontal and vertical single-axis anemometers was installed at New York's Kennedy Airport on 30-foot poles under the approach to Runway 31R. Although the original purpose for the anemometers was to track the lateral position of wake vortices, new processing algorithms were developed that permit assessment of vortex height and circulation. Data from more than 20,000 landings have been recorded and processed. This report documents the current state of algorithm development and provides processed data for other researchers to analyze.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wake vortex groundwind and meteorological measurements obtained by DOT-TSC at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport have been reduced, analyzed, and correlated with a theoretical vortex transport model. The predictive Wake Vortex Transport Model has been updated so that detailed on-site meteorological measurements can be interpreted and utilized to predict more accurately the vortex transport and decay characteristics. A discussion of the wake vortex test data analysis and software development is presented, including a description of the JFK wake vortex test program, the computer processing of wake vortex measurements, the analysis of groundwind sensor measurements, and the analysis of meteorological measurements. Book excerpt: This report addresses the wake-turbulence separation standards for close-spaced parallel runways. Ground-wind anemometer data collected at Kennedy (landing) and O-hare (takeoff) airports are analyzed to assess the lateral transport probability for wake vortices.

Book excerpt: Data from 1320 aircraft flybys at Kennedy International Airport, Jamaica, New York, in 1975 were processed and stored in a computerized vortex data management system. The data were selectively recalled to determine vortex characteristics pertinent to the design of an effective wake vortex avoidance system. Vortex and meteorological characteristics which are relevant to the design of an effective wake vortex avoidance system are discussed from an analytical viewpoint as well as from an analysis of the data. Several formulations for feedback of vortex sensor information to provide vortex prediction are presented. Several wake vortex avoidance system designs are shown. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three wake vortex measurement systems (anemometer, acoustic doppler, and laser doppler) were used to collect wake vortex data from aircraft departing Runway 22L at Chicago's O'Hare Airport for nine months in 1980. The data were analyzed to determine vortex decay and vortex transport probabilities. The results support the classification of all B-707 and DC-8 aircraft in the large wake vortex class. The acoustic doppler system was found to be significantly more sensitive than the ground anemometer system to vortices transported long distances laterally by a crosswind. The most efficient lateral transport was noted for crosswinds greater than seven knots. The horizontal and vertical ground wind signatures of a wake vortex are compared.
