This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2023 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (NRCRI - Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, Nigeria), course: Computer Science Database, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study was to examine the current state, prospects and challenges in digitizing archival collections of Gemstones and its resources in Nigeria. The research adopted a qualitative research method. The case study research strategy was considered appropriate for the study. Data was gathered through observation and interviews. Interviews were conducted with fifty-two respondents from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals and Steel Development, Federal Secretariat, Uyo and the Akwa Ibom State e-library, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study revealed that the respondents claimed to have good knowledge of Gemstones occurrence and its economic importance in Nigeria. They have knowledge of digitization, are aware of the need for digitizing reports published about Gemstones in Nigeria, and that most of the collections are currently not being digitized. Respondents admitted that digitization would be highly beneficial to Government, the institutions that regulate mineral resources, corporate organizations and artisan miners but issues such as lack of funding, lack of digitization policy and lack of trained personnel are the major challenges facing the digitization of Gemstones in the country. The research deals with the contextual and local nature of digitization and brings to the fore the importance of digitizing the collections of Genmstones and its resources in Nigeria. The findings and recommendations of this study is very useful to the Federal and States Governments, policy makers and all stakeholders in the solid minerals sub-sector, especially now that Government propose to diversify the Nigerian economy.

Book The Imperative of Integrated Mineral and Oil Resources Extraction and Management Policy for Sustainable Peace and Development in Nigeria

Download or read book The Imperative of Integrated Mineral and Oil Resources Extraction and Management Policy for Sustainable Peace and Development in Nigeria written by Ikeanyibe Okey Marcellus and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organised mining and extraction of mineral resources began in 1903 in the Northern Protectorates and in 1904 in the Southern Protectorates of modern Nigeria with the establishment of Mineral Survey of the Northern Protectorates and the Mineral Survey of Southern Protectorates respectively, by the British colonial government. Over a century later, extraction of mineral resources in the country is still highly underdeveloped. There are great conflicts that surround oil extraction in the Niger Delta region, and Nigeria imports solid minerals which she is capable of producing domestically. The extraction of solid minerals and oil resources also calls into question issues of environmental neglect in the country. This paper provides for a descriptive analysis of Nigeria's mineral and oil resources extraction and management policy since the colonial period. It is observed that public policies in the sector have been interventionist, marginal, disjointed and elitist, and, have not properly included issues of sustainability for peace and development. Key recommendations of the paper are that public policy in the mineral and oil sector should seek to include more stringent regulations in relation to the environment, ensure equity in rent or royalty distribution especially to the host communities and develop the extraction of solid minerals with which the country is abundantly blessed.

Book The Future of Entrepreneurship in Africa

Download or read book The Future of Entrepreneurship in Africa written by Robert E. Hinson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrepreneurial and Small Business Development in Africa focuses on entrepreneurial development and the development of small businesses in Africa. The central idea of this book is that entrepreneurial development and small business development are connected. Entrepreneurship is lauded as an engine of growth (economic development and job creation), with small businesses often contributing to new job creation. Also, entrepreneurship and small business development are the heart of many countries’ economies. The decision to focus on entrepreneurial development and small business development is that first, there is a consensus that most entrepreneurial activities are aimed at creating small new ventures. Second, countries that give special attention to entrepreneurship stand a chance of industrialization. Third, Africa has been reported as having a rich entrepreneurial landscape as the continent’s wealthiest individuals generated their wealth as trailblazing entrepreneurs. Fourth, small-scale entrepreneurs and businesses form the backbone of economic activities across the continent. A motivation to focus on entrepreneurial and small business development is the generally accepted view that start-ups in Africa are growing calling for understanding into how to enhance productivity, efficiencies, and application of new technologies. The book aims to enhance the understanding of stakeholders (business owners, governments, practitioners) to overturn challenges such as inadequate start-up capital, competition, lack of employees with the right skills, and low use of technology. The ability to develop entrepreneurship in Africa, and the role of small-medium enterprises cannot be underestimated. The promotion of entrepreneurship in Africa is crucial as it creates jobs, provides decent livelihoods, and contributes to GDP. Most entrepreneurial initiatives in developing economies entail identifying opportunities and new venture creation. It is worth recognizing that most new ventures created take the form of small businesses and the entrepreneurial processes involve entrepreneurs’ knowledge and skills, identifying opportunities, involvement in setting up a business and managing the business. The various aspects of this book focus on many entrepreneurial activities that are undertaken on the African continent. This book is focused on African countries since there is a reason to be optimistic about the prospects for growth and entrepreneurship. To achieve entrepreneurial success in African countries, the African Development Bank (2021) proposes that there must be a link between macro and firm-level characteristics that will serve as the mix of entrepreneurship in societies. This book, therefore, considers some macro-level factors such as education, training, and skills development, technological developments, government programs, and entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities. At the firm-level, this book focuses on entrepreneurial initiatives such as branding and marketing.

Book Failed State 2030

Download or read book Failed State 2030 written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " This monograph describes how a failed state in 2030 may impact the United States and the global economy. It also identifies critical capabilities and technologies the US Air Force should have to respond to a failed state, especially one of vital interest to the United States and one on the cusp of a civil war. Nation-states can fail for a myriad of reasons: cultural or religious conflict, a broken social contract between the government and the governed, a catastrophic natural disaster, financial collapse, war and so forth. Nigeria with its vast oil wealth, large population, and strategic position in Africa and the global economy can, if it fails disproportionately affect the United States and the global economy. Nigeria, like many nations in Africa, gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. It is the most populous country in Africa and will have nearly 250 million people by 2030. In its relatively short modern history, Nigeria has survived five military coups as well as separatist and religious wars, is mired in an active armed insurgency, is suffering from disastrous ecological conditions in its Niger Delta region, and is fighting one of the modern world's worst legacies of political and economic corruption. A nation with more than 350 ethnic groups, 250 languages, and three distinct religious affiliations--Christian, Islamic, and animist Nigeria's 135 million people today are anything but homogenous. Of Nigeria's 36 states, 12 are Islamic and under the strong and growing influence of the Sokoto caliphate. While religious and ethnic violence are commonplace, the federal government has managed to strike a tenuous balance among the disparate religious and ethnic factions. With such demographics, Nigeria's failure would be akin to a piece of fine china dropped on a tile floor--it would simply shatter into potentially hundreds of pieces."--DTIC abstract.
