Book Information Storage and Retrieval Systems

Download or read book Information Storage and Retrieval Systems written by Gerald J. Kowalski and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 1 places into perspective a total Information Storage and Retrieval System. This perspective introduces new challenges to the problems that need to be theoretically addressed and commercially implemented. Ten years ago commercial implementation of the algorithms being developed was not realistic, allowing theoreticians to limit their focus to very specific areas. Bounding a problem is still essential in deriving theoretical results. But the commercialization and insertion of this technology into systems like the Internet that are widely being used changes the way problems are bounded. From a theoretical perspective, efficient scalability of algorithms to systems with gigabytes and terabytes of data, operating with minimal user search statement information, and making maximum use of all functional aspects of an information system need to be considered. The dissemination systems using persistent indexes or mail files to modify ranking algorithms and combining the search of structured information fields and free text into a consolidated weighted output are examples of potential new areas of investigation. The best way for the theoretician or the commercial developer to understand the importance of problems to be solved is to place them in the context of a total vision of a complete system. Understanding the differences between Digital Libraries and Information Retrieval Systems will add an additional dimension to the potential future development of systems. The collaborative aspects of digital libraries can be viewed as a new source of information that dynamically could interact with information retrieval techniques.

Book Organizing Information

Download or read book Organizing Information written by Dagobert Soergel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-09-26 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a theoretical base and a perspective for the analysis, design, and operation of information systems, particularly their information storage and retrieval (ISAR) component, whether mechanized or manual. Information systems deal with many types of entities: events, persons, documents, business transactions, museum objects, research projects, and technical parts, to name a few. Among the purposes the serve are to inform the public, to support managers, researchers, and engineers, and to provide a knowledge base for an artificial intelligence program. The principles discussed in this book apply to all these contexts. The book achieves this generality by drawing on ideas from two conceptually overlapping areas—data base management and the organization and use of knowledge in libraries—and by integrating these ideas into a coherent framework. The principles discussed apply to the design of new systems and, more importantly, to the analysis of existing systems in order to exploit their capabilities better, to circumvent their shortcomings, and to introduce modifications where feasible.

Book A Computer Storage and Retrieval System for Scientific Data

Download or read book A Computer Storage and Retrieval System for Scientific Data written by Theodore B. Barrett and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer storage and retrieval system for use with a CDC6600 computer as it is configured at AFGL, Hanscom AFB, was developed. The information stored and retrieved falls into three categories: source citation (bibliographic), data category (keyword) and scientific data (usually quantitative measurements on various properties of a selected class of materials). This report gives a general and specific description of this system which consists of computer subroutines, files and operational procedures. In addition it provides a detailed user's guide for operating the system. (Author).

Book World Class Warehousing and Material Handling

Download or read book World Class Warehousing and Material Handling written by Edward H. Frazelle and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2001-10-09 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timeless Insights for Planning and Managing 21st-Century Warehouse Operations Despite today's just-in-time production mentality, with its efforts to eliminate warehouses and their inventory carrying costs, effective warehousing continues to play a critical bottom-line role for companies worldwide. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling covers today's state-of-the-art tools, metrics, and methodologies for dramatically increasing the effectiveness, accuracy, and overall productivity of warehousing operations. Written by one of today's recognized logistics thought leaders, this comprehensive resource provides authoritative answers on such topics as: The seven principles of world-class warehousing Warehouse activity profiling Warehouse performance measures Warehouse automation and computerization Receiving and put away Storage and retrieval operations Picking and packing Humanizing warehouse operations World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling describes the processes and systems required for meeting the changing demands of warehousing. Filled with practices from proven to innovative, it will help all logistics professionals improve the productivity, quality, and cycle time of their existing warehouse operations. Not too long ago, effective warehousing was a relatively straightforward progression of receiving, storing, and shipping. But in today's age of e-commerce, supply chain integration, globalization, and just-in-time methodology, warehousing has become more complex than at any time in the pastnot to mention more costly. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling breaks through the confusing array of warehouse technology, buzzwords, and third-party providers to describe the principles of warehousing required for the implementation of world-class warehousing operations. Holding up efficiency and accuracy as the keys to success in warehousing, it is the first widely published methodology for warehouse problem solving across all areas of the supply chain, providing an organized set of principles that can be used to streamline all types of warehousing operations. Case studies from Avon, Ford, Xerox, True Value Hardware, and others detail how today's most innovative logistics and supply chain managers are arriving at proven solutions to a wide variety of warehousing challenges. Topics discussed include: Warehouse activity profilingfor identifying causes of information and material flow problems and pinpointing opportunities for improvement Warehouse performance measuresfor monitoring, reporting, and benchmarking warehouse performance Storage and retrieval system selectionfor improving storage density, handling productivity, and trade-offs in required capital investment Order picking strategiesfor improving the productivity and accuracy of order fulfillment Computerizing warehousing operationsfor profiling activity, monitoring performance, and simplifying operations World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling integrates global and e-commerce issues as it addresses customization, information technology, performance analysis, expansion and contraction planning, and the overall role of the warehouse in logistics management and the supply chain. Filled with proven operational solutions, it will guide managers as they develop a warehouse master plan, one designed to minimize the effects of supply chain inefficiencies as it improves logistics accuracy and inventory managementand reduces overall warehousing expense.
