Book Plant Genomics and Proteomics

Download or read book Plant Genomics and Proteomics written by Christopher A. Cullis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-01-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant research has stood at the forefront of the genomics revolution. One of the first genome projects, the sequencing of the commonly used model organism Arabidopsis, has already yielded important results for the study of a broad array of crops such as corn and soybeans. With crop and food bioengineering only in its infancy, the need to understand the fundamental genetic mechanisms of plants will only become more pressing. A comprehensive guide to this fascinating area of genomics, Plant Genomics and Proteomics presents an integrated, broadly accessible treatment of the complex relationship between the genome, transcriptome, and proteome of plants. This clearly written text introduces the reader to the range of molecular techniques applicable to investigating the unique facets of plant growth, development, and response to the environment. Coverage includes: Functional and structural genomics addressed within the context of current techniques and challenges to come How to utilize DNA and protein sequence data Practical considerations for choosing and employing the most commonly available computer applications A review of applications for biotechnology, including genetic modification and defense against pathogens Bioinformatics tools and Web resources Numerous examples from the latest research throughout Assuming no specialized knowledge of plant biology on the part of its reader, Plant Genomics and Proteomics provides an invaluable resource for students and researchers in biotechnology, plant biology, genomics, and bioinformatics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent major advances in the field of comparative genomics and cytogenomics of plants, particularly associated with the completion of ambitious genome projects, have uncovered astonishing facets of the architecture and evolutionary history of plant genomes. The aim of this book was to review these recent developments as well as their implications in our understanding of the mechanisms which drive plant diversity. New insights into the evolution of gene functions, gene families and genome size are presented, with particular emphasis on the evolutionary impact of polyploidization and transposable elements. Knowledge on the structure and evolution of plant sex chromosomes, centromeres and microRNAs is reviewed and updated. Taken together, the contributions by internationally recognized experts present a panoramic overview of the structural features and evolutionary dynamics of plant genomes. This volume of Genome Dynamics will provide researchers, teachers and students in the fields of biology and agronomy with a valuable source of current knowledge on plant genomes.

Download or read book The National Plant Genome Initiative written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-11-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Plant Genome Initiative was launched in 1998 as a long-term project to explore DNA structure and function in plants so that useful properties of plants can be understood, improved, and ultimately harnessed to address national needs, including agriculture, nutrition, energy and waste reduction. Experts in the community were asked to consider how to build on current accomplishments in order to address major questions in plant biology and to make recommendations for objectives for the next five-year phase of the Initiative.

Book Achievements of the National Plant Genome Initiative and New Horizons in Plant Biology

Download or read book Achievements of the National Plant Genome Initiative and New Horizons in Plant Biology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life on Earth would be impossible without plants. Humans rely on plants for most clothing, furniture, food, as well as for many pharmaceuticals and other products. Plant genome sciences are essential to understanding how plants function and how to develop desirable plant characteristics. For example, plant genomic science can contribute to the development of plants that are drought-resistant, those that require less fertilizer, and those that are optimized for conversion to fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. The National Plant Genome Initiative (NPGI) is a unique, cross-agency funding enterprise that has been funding and coordinating plant genome research successfully for nine years. Research breakthroughs from NPGI and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Arabidopsis 2010 Project, such as how the plant immune system controls pathogen defense, demonstrate that the plant genome science community is vibrant and capable of driving technological advancement. This book from the National Research Council concludes that these programs should continue so that applied programs on agriculture, bioenergy, and others will always be built on a strong foundation of fundamental plant biology research.

Book Plant Genomic and Cytogenetic Databases

Download or read book Plant Genomic and Cytogenetic Databases written by Sònia Garcia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the latest online plant genomics and cytogenetic resources used by plant evolutionary biologists and plant breeders. The chapters in this book are organized into two parts. Part One looks at plant genomic databases, and covers topics such as plant phenomics and genomics research data repositories, InpactorDB, PlanTEenrichment, and PEATmoss, among others. Part Two looks at cytogenetics and chromosome-related databases, and covers resources such as the Plant DNA C-values database, the Delphineae Chromosome Database (DCDB), B-chrom, a Database on B-chromosomes, and the Plant Ribosomal DNA Database. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective databases and offers explicit directions on how to access and get the most of these resources. Cutting-edge and comprehensive, Plant Genomic and Cytogenetic Databases is a valuable instrument for any plant science researcher who is interested in learning more about the wealth of information that is available through the use of these databases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent development of ideas on biodiversity conservation was already being considered almost three-quarters of a century ago for crop plants and the wild species related to them, by the Russian geneticist N.!. Vavilov. He was undoubtedly the first scientist to understand the impor tance for humankind of conserving for utilization the genetic diversity of our ancient crop plants and their wild relatives from their centres of diversity. His collections showed various traits of adaptation to environ mental extremes and biotypes of crop diseases and pests which were unknown to most plant breeders in the first quarter of the twentieth cen tury. Later, in the 1940s-1960s scientists began to realize that the pool of genetic diversity known to Vavilov and his colleagues was beginning to disappear. Through the replacement of the old, primitive and highly diverse land races by uniform modem varieties created by plant breed ers, the crop gene pool was being eroded. The genetic diversity of wild species was equally being threatened by human activities: over-exploita tion, habitat destruction or fragmentation, competition resulting from the introduction of alien species or varieties, changes and intensification of land use, environmental pollution and possible climate change.
