Download or read book Parallel Database Systems written by Pierre America and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-06-26 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of a workshop on parallel database systems organized by the PRISMA (Parallel Inference and Storage Machine) project. The invited contributions by internationally recognized experts give a thorough survey of several aspects of parallel database systems. The second part of the volume gives an in-depth overview of the PRISMA system. This system is based on a parallel machine, where the individual processors each have their own local memory and communicate with each other over a packet-switched network. On this machine a parallel object-oriented programming language, POOL-X, has been implemented, which provides dedicated support for database systems as well as general facilities for parallel programming. The POOL-X system then serves as a platform for a complete relational main-memory database management system, which uses the parallelism of the machine to speed up significantly the execution of database queries. The presentation of the PRISMA system, together with the invited papers, gives a broad overview of the state of the art in parallel database systems.
Download or read book Simulation Systems written by George Zobrist and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-04-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation Systems expolres a wide spectrum of topics including simulation software, logic simulation, query-driven simulation, multi-computer simulation and manufacturing simulation. Although such papers are presented in Journals and conference proceedings it is difficult to find a single source where the foremost papers are presented. Contributions in Simulation Systms are freom leading researchers and practioners which explore a wide spectrum of topics. The chapters include topics such as presentation of SIMULA/OBJECTR, which is a query driven simulation support environment and a method of translating automatically digital logic equations so that they may be simulated using VHDL. This is followed by simulation techniques for deterministic and statistical circuit design optimization. A mathematical model of a magnetic resonance imaging system is simulated so that one can better understand the imaging system.
Download or read book The Functional Approach to Data Management written by Peter M.D. Gray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over 20 years since the functional data model and functional programming languages were first introduced to the computing community. Although developed by separate research communities, recent work, presented in this book, suggests there is powerful synergy in their integration. As database technology emerges as central to yet more complex and demanding applications in areas such as bioinformatics, national security, criminal investigations and advanced engineering, more sophisticated approaches like those presented here, are needed. A tutorial introduction by the editors prepares the reader for the chapters that follow, written by leading researchers, including some of the early pioneers. They provide a comprehensive treatment showing how the functional approach provides for modeling, analyzis and optimization in databases, and also data integration and interoperation in heterogeneous environments. Several chapters deal with mathematical results on the transformation of expressions, fundamental to the functional approach. The book also aims to show how the approach relates to the Internet and current work on semistructured data, XML and RDF. The book presents a comprehensive view of the functional approach to data management, bringing together important material hitherto widely scattered, some new research, and a comprehensive set of references. It will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, faculty and graduate students, as well as those in industry responsible for new systems development.
Download or read book ICDT 90 written by Serge Abiteboul and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-12-03 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of new paradigms for data management raises a variety of exciting challenges. An important goal of database theory is to answer these challenges by providing sound foundations for the development of the field. This volume contains the papers selected for the third International Conference on Database Theory, ICDT'90. The conferences in this series are held biannually in beautiful European cities, Rome in 1986 and Bruges in 1988 with proceedings published as volumes 234 and 326 in the same series. ICDT'90 was organized in Paris by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique. The conference features 2 invited presentations and 31 papers selected from 129 submissions. The papers describe original ideas and new results on the foundations of databases, knowledge bases, object-oriented databases, relational theory, transaction management, data structures and deductive databases. The volume offers a good overview of the state of the art and the current trends in database theory. It should be a valuable source of information for researchers interested in the field.
Download or read book Advances in Database Systems written by J. Paredaens and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced information technology is pervasive in any kind of human activity - science, business, finance, management and others - and this is particularly true for database systems. Both database theory and database applications constitute a very important part of the state of the art of computer science. Meanwhile there is some discrepancy between different aspects of database activity. Theoreticians are sometimes not much aware of the real needs of business and industry; software specialists not always have the time or the apportunity to get acquainted with the most recent theoretical ideas and trends, as well as with advanced prototypes arising from these ideas; potential users often do not have the possibility of evaluating the theoretical foundations and the potential practical impact of different commercial products. So the main goal of the course was to put together people involved in different aspects of database activity and to promote active exchange of ideas among them.

Download or read book Logic Programming and Databases written by Stefano Ceri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of logic programming and databases. has gained in creasing interest in recent years. Several events have marked the rapid evolution of this field: the selection, by the Japanese Fifth Generation Project, of Prolog and of the relational data model as the basis for the development of new machine archi tectures; the focusing of research in database theory on logic queries and on recursive query processing; and the pragmatic, application-oriented development of expert database systems and of knowledge-base systems. As a result, an enormous amount of work has been produced in the recent literature, coupled with the spontaneous growth of several advanced projects in this area. The goal of this book is to present a systematic overview of a rapidly evolving discipline, which is presently not described with the same approach in other books. We intend to introduce stu dents and researchers to this new discipline; thus we use a plain, tutorial style, and complement the description of algorithms with examples and exercises. We attempt to achieve a balance be tween theoretical foundations and technological issues; thus we present a careful introduction to the new language Datalog, but we also focus on the efficient interfacing of logic programming formalisms (such as Prolog and Datalog) with large databases.

Download or read book Intelligent Problem Solving Methodologies and Approaches written by Rasiah Logananthara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-07 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the papers presented in these proceedings is on employing various methodologies and approaches for solving real-life problems. Although the mechanisms that the human brain employs to solve problems are not yet completely known, we do have good insight into the functional processing performed by the human mind. On the basis of the understanding of these natural processes, scientists in the field of applied intelligence have developed multiple types of artificial processes, and have employed them successfully in solving real-life problems. The types of approaches used to solve problems are dependant on both the nature of the problem and the expected outcome. While knowledge-based systems are useful for solving problems in well-understood domains with relatively stable environments, the approach may fail when the domain knowledge is either not very well understood or changing rapidly. The techniques of data discovery through data mining will help to alleviate some problems faced by knowledge-based approaches to solving problems in such domains. Research and development in the area of artificial intelligence are influenced by opportunity, needs, and the availability of resources. The rapid advancement of Internet technology and the trend of increasing bandwidths provide an opportunity and a need for intelligent information processing, thus creating an excellent opportunity for agent-based computations and learning. Over 40% of the papers appearing in the conference proceedings focus on the area of machine learning and intelligent agents - clear evidence of growing interest in this area.
