Book Tantric Visions of the Divine Feminine

Download or read book Tantric Visions of the Divine Feminine written by David Kinsley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hindu pantheon is rich in images of the divine feminine—deities representing a wide range of symbolic, social, and meditative meanings. David Kinsley's new book documents a highly unusual group of ten Hindu tantric goddesses, the Mahavidyas, many of whom are strongly associated with sexuality and violence. What is one to make of a goddess who cuts her own head off, or one who prefers sex with a corpse? The Mahavidyas embody habits, attributes, or identities usually considered repulsive or socially subversive and can be viewed as "antimodels" for women. Yet it is within the context of tantric worship that devotees seek to identify themselves with these forbidding goddesses. The Mahavidyas seem to function as "awakeners"—symbols which help to project one's consciousness beyond the socially acceptable or predictable. Drawing on a broad range of Sanskrit and vernacular texts as well as extensive research in India, including written and oral interpretations of contemporary Hindu practitioners, Kinsley describes the unusual qualities of each of the Mahavidyas and traces the parallels between their underlying themes. Especially valuable are the many rare and fascinating images he presents—each important to grasping the significance of the goddesses. Written in an accessible, engaging style, Kinsley's book provides a comprehensive understanding of the Mahavidyas and is also an overview of Hindu tantric practice.

Book Tantra Mantra and Yantra of Sri Vidya

Download or read book Tantra Mantra and Yantra of Sri Vidya written by Vinita Rashinkar and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sri Vidya begins where the current understanding of quantum physics ends,” say modern-day scholars about this little-known, highly esoteric spiritual tradition that has been carefully kept under wraps by its secretive and serious practitioners. The study of Sri Vidya is fascinating as much as it is frustrating because information about its various aspects is exceptionally hard to find. Tantra, Mantra and Yantra of Sri Vidya is an endeavor to explore the Sri Vidya tradition and understand it as the unfolding of Shakti, the inherent power which lies at the core of our being and holds the key to our worldly and spiritual success. Sri Vidya practice comprises tantra (a technique or framework for worship) whose two main elements are mantra (sacred sound) and yantra (sacred geometry). Tantra can be described in simple terms as the utilization of the mental faculty to pursue the objectives of worship using mantra and yantra. Mantra is the use of sound energy to bring about oneness with the Divine while yantra is a geometric drawing that serves as a tool to reach the Divine. The book delves into concepts such as Sankhya, Yoga, Karma and Kundalini in order to establish the context of how Sri Vidya is to be approached, combining elements of knowledge, devotion and ritual. The author has kept in mind the sensibilities of the modern spiritual seeker and their needs and interests, presenting the information in a non-dogmatic and practical manner, thereby allowing everyone an opportunity to learn and experience the benefits of Sri Vidya. This is the third book by the author in the Spirituality Series. The first book was about the Sri Chakra Yantra and the second book had Chakras as its subject.

Book Secret Goddesses of Tantra An Esoteric Understanding of Tantra and Philosophical Interpretation of Dasha Mahavidya

Download or read book Secret Goddesses of Tantra An Esoteric Understanding of Tantra and Philosophical Interpretation of Dasha Mahavidya written by Mehul Vora and published by StoryMirror Infotech Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book: What would you call a group of Goddesses that wear garlands of skull, while the other drinks her own blood? A Goddess with incomparable beauty while the other is a crone. A Goddess that loves leftovers while the other demands cleanliness. This book discusses Dasha Mahavidyas - one of the most important Goddesses of Tantra. As the laws of science define energy as primordial ever existent, that is utilized through a medium, similarly, Dasha Mahavidyas are the primordial Sakti or energy, that creates, destroys, and sustains the universe. They are Mahavidyas or “Great Knowledge” where each Goddess has something distinct to teach. Every Goddess in the book is dealt independently - illustrating appearance, stories of origin, symbolism, various forms and relation to other Goddesses, Mantras, Yantra, Sadhana procedure, temples and any parallels that can be drawn from other cultures. Tantra is often perceived as black magic, voodoo or art of love, but in reality, Tantra is “A way of life” that stretches the body to its limit and prepares one to walk the path of liberation. Tantra uses various objects that may otherwise be a taboo or appalling in nature, however, it is not what it appears to be. The objects are just extreme tools to control senses and mind. This book breaks such myths around Tantra and explores its hidden knowledge. It attempts to reason every aspect from a literary and philosophical point of view. About the Author: Mehul Vora is an accomplished writer, speaker, astrologer and a proponent of ancient Indian culture and Tantra. He is a vivid reader of ancient texts which inspire him to interpret knowledge in a simplified manner so that everyone can relish the treasures of wisdom. He has written on many topics that range from ancient history to world mythology. Mehul brings his experiences and knowledge of Tantra in this book.

Book Change Continuity and Complexity

Download or read book Change Continuity and Complexity written by Jae-Eun Shin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mahāvidyās are the representative Tantric feminine pantheon consisting of ten goddesses. It is formed by divergent religious strands and elements: the mātṛ and yoginī worship, the cult of Kālī and Tripurasundarī, Vajrayāna Buddhism, Jain Vidyādevīs, Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava faith, Śrīvidyā, the Brahmanical strand of Puranic traditions, etc. This volume is the first attempt to explore the historical process, through which these traditions culminated in the Mahāvidyā cult and the goddesses with different origins and contradictory attributes were brought into a cluster, with special reference to socio-political changes in the lower Gaṅgā and Brahmaputra Valley between the 9th and 15th centuries CE. Based on a close analysis of Purāṇas, Tantras and inscriptional evidence, and on extensive field research on archaeological remains as well as sacred sites, Jae-Eun Shin discusses the two trajectories of the Mahāvidyās in eastern Śākta traditions. Each led to the systematization of Daśamahāvidyās in a specific way: one, as ten manifestations of Durgā upholding dharma in the cosmic dimension, and the other, as ten mandalic goddesses bearing magical powers in the actual sacred site. Their attributes and characteristics have neither been static nor monolithic, and the mode of worship prescribed for them has changed in a dialectical religious process between Brahmanical and Tantric traditions of the region. This is the definitive work for anyone seeking to understand goddess cults of South Asia in general and the history of eastern Śākta traditions in particular. To aid study, the volume includes images, diagrams and maps. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Tantras, which are numerous, constitute the scripture (Sastra) of the Kaliyuga, and as such is a voluminous source of present and practical orthodox "Hinduism". The Tantra Shastra is, in fact, whatever be its historical origin, a development of the Karmakanda (using that term in the general sense of ritual section of the scripture), promulgated to meet the needs of that age. Siva says: "For the benefit of men of the Kali age, men bereft of energy and dependent for existence on the food they eat, the Kaula doctrine, O auspicious one! is given" (Ch. IX, verse 12). To the Tantras, we must therefore look if we would understand aright both ritual, yoga, and sadhana of all kinds as they exist today, as also the general principles of which these practices are but the objective expression.
