Book Translating and Publishing African Language s and Literature s

Download or read book Translating and Publishing African Language s and Literature s written by Tomi Adeaga and published by Iko. This book was released on 2006 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomi Adeaga examines the challenges of translating African literatures into European languages, devoting care, attention and insight to the problems of translating African voices into German. This topic has been virtually ignored by scholars despite years of unevenly translated works from African into European languages. Ultimately, the work seeks to offer a dynamic justification for the relevance of reading and translating African literature. Adeaga writes with the authority of a practitioner and the passion of someone who understands the distinctive challenges of translating across cultures and histories. Tomi Adeaga is a native of Lagos Nigeria. After completing her Bachelors degree in German/French at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Ile-Ife, she completed her post-graduate studies in Germany. She was awarded her Masters degree in Germanistik at the Universitt in Siegen. She received another diploma in French/German translation and communication and later completed her PhD degree at the Siegerland Sprachenschule.

Book The Last Will and Testament of Senhor Da Silva Ara jo

Download or read book The Last Will and Testament of Senhor Da Silva Ara jo written by Germano Almeida and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his will, Senhor da Silva Araujo has left a memoir that is a touching web of elaborate self-deceptions. He desired so ardently to prosper, to be taken seriously, and to join (perhaps, if they would have him) the exclusive Gremio country club. But most of all, he wanted to be a good man. And yet, shady deals, twists of fate, an illegitimate child: such is the lot of poor, self-critical Senhor da Silva Araujo. A bit like Calvino's Mr. Palomar in his attention to protocol and in his terror of life's passions; a bit like Svevo's Zeno (a little pompous, a little old-fashioned, and often hapless) Senhor da Silva Araujo moves along a deliciously blurry line between farce and tragedy: a self-important buffoon becomes a fully human, even tragic, figure in the arc of this novel."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: "For anyone even remotely interested in American literature and journalism, Not So Wild a Dream is a must-read, and a joy."– Dan Rather In this captivating first-person account, Eric Sevareid describes in thrilling detail his time as a journalist covering international affairs during World War II. From a young man in North Dakota to an instrumental figure in establishing CBS as an international news organization, Sevareid witnessed the shaping of America’s journalistic landscape. His experiences provide an invaluable glimpse into the trials and tribulations of a dogged reporter. With current distrust of the press on the rise, Sevareid’s insight is poignant and all the more necessary. "The book is an excellent sketch of the war's progress, and a thoughtful personal record of Mr. Sevareid's adventures--one of the most far ranging war correspondent journals yet published."– Library Journal

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 567 pages

Download or read book Elmer Gantry written by Sinclair Lewis and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-01-01T20:36:53Z with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elmer Gantry isn’t suited to be a lawyer, so he becomes a preacher instead. Although he experiences a variety of failures, and even more successes, Gantry ultimately finds this new career path suits him very well indeed—despite his drinking and womanizing. Throughout his time as a preacher Gantry progresses through the hierarchies of the Baptist and Methodist churches, dabbles in revivalism and “New Thought,” and even experiments with politics, all the while emerging from scandals relatively unscathed and ready to move onward and upward once again. Sinclair Lewis published the satirical Elmer Gantry in 1927 much to the dismay of the religious community. It was denounced from the pulpit, banned by many, and even engendered threats of violence. Despite this—or perhaps because of it—it went on to become a massive success and the best selling novel of that year. One of the most savage satirical assaults against institutionalized religion and its hypocrisy in American literature, Elmer Gantry continues to be a window into a particularly important aspect of American history. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
