Eight more contributions by Monique Alexandre, Peter Bruns, Judith Kovacs, Salvatore Lilla, Friedhelm Mann, Alden Mosshammer, Elias Moutsoulas, and Lucian Turcescu focus on further general and particular topics of the homilies as their eschatology, the meaning of the word makarios in all of Gregory's works, the notion of justice, and Gregory's Theology of Adoption, as well as their relationship to Syriac theology, Clement of Alexandria, Neoplatonism, and Gregory's Homilies on the Song of Songs. Book Problems in Biblical Theology

Download or read book Problems in Biblical Theology written by Henry T. C. Sun and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trained in the German tradition, Rolf Knierim is a scholar who has made many significant contributions to the ongoing discussion of form criticism, tradition history, and theology. He is also a passionate and charismatic teacher and a widely respected author and editor who has served the scholarly world most visibly in his role as coeditor of the Forms of the Old Testament Literature commentary series. Problems in Biblical Theology is an erudite collection of twenty four essays produced to honor Knierim's contribution to the study of biblical theology. It also stands in its own right as a vade mecum of current trends in biblical scholarship. Written by an international array of respected scholars--Knierim's colleagues, former students, and fellow commentators--this volume includes detailed exegetical studies, discussions of theological methods and approaches from a variety of standpoints, and efforts at relating Old Testament exegesis, theology, and hermeneutics to current interests in social scientific methods of interpretation or postmodern thought. In all, the breadth of interests found in this volume reflects the intellectual vitality and passion that Knierim himself has brought to the discipline. A biographical narrative written by Hildegard Knierim and a foreword by James M. Robinson provide additional insight into the historical and social contexts within which Knierim's work has unfolded.

Book DE TRIBUS PRINCIPIIS oder Beschreibung der Drey Principien G ttliches Wesens

Download or read book DE TRIBUS PRINCIPIIS oder Beschreibung der Drey Principien G ttliches Wesens written by Andrew Weeks and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-03-25 with total page 875 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Boehme’s Of the Three Principles of Divine Being, 1619, is vital for understanding his work as a whole, its relationship to its epoch, and its role in intellectual history. Reproduced here using the methods of critical edition, the original of the work and its adjacent translation, together with an extensive introduction and commentary, provide unprecedented access to this essential work of early modern thought and cast a fresh light on the revolutionary theological, philosophical, and scientific developments coinciding with the start of the Thirty Years’ War. The 1730 edition is annotated with reference to the manuscript sources to clarify ambiguities so that the translation can interpret the text without refracting its meaning. This makes it possible to interpret Boehme’s complex theories of the origin of the divine being and of nature, the human creature, and the female aspect of divinity.

Download or read book Until it is Fulfilled written by Anders E. Nielsen and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anders E. Nielsen presents a fresh look on New Testament eschatology by analysing the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. He first of all considers whether ancient literary expressions of farewell motif may or may not lead to an outlook of some sort of transcendental nature, which could play an active role in the composition of the text as read text. He concludes that in a fairly representative number of non-biblical as well as biblical farewell-addresses we do find transcendental outlooks with eschatological implications. Furthermore, these particular outlooks seem to be at work in close relation to the approaching death of the intended speaker of the addresses. Against this background the two major farewell addresses, the one of Jesus in Luke 22 and the one of Paul in Acts 20, are at great length analysed by means of a rhetorical and text-linguistic approach. Anders E. Nielsen divides his exegetical-theological findings into three main-points. First of all the traditional hypothesis of an imminent expectation of the parousia is seen as problematic, because the eschatology in Luke seems to be less a matter of chronology and more a question of quality. Secondly, some of the sayings in a hellenistic work like Luke-Acts may sometimes be free to express a vertical-transcendent aspect with individual-eschatological associations, while other phases are sufficiently vague to call up in the audience both individual and/or collective-eschatological connotations. Thirdly, all this put together suggests that Luke's religious language does in fact not play down eschatology. On the contrary, Anders E. Nielsen suggests that one can speak of some sort of applied eschatology in the sense that all the relevant expressions in the compositions examined suggest a far more parenetic or prescriptive semantic function than an informative one.

Book Die Eucharistie ist Jesus

Download or read book Die Eucharistie ist Jesus written by Herbert Schmid and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-09-30 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the concept of salvation through knowledge in Valentinian Gnosis, which is basically anti-materialist, one would not expect concrete physical rituals to play a large role in its practice. The Nag Hammadi Gospel of Philip is widely recognized as a Valentinian text, yet it contains portions of a treatise on the value of baptism, anointing, and the eucharist. The text, which arguably comes from the end of the second century, presents the first developed theory and justification of these sacraments in Early Christianity. The present study reconstructs this theory from the fragmentary text and considers its consequences for the organization of the community. Thus, the book is also an attempt to address the problem of institutionalization in early Christian communities.

Book Body Dialectics in the Age of Goethe

Download or read book Body Dialectics in the Age of Goethe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher – and for a moment freeze – the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.
