Dem gegenüber stehen die Theorien der Frankfurter Schule, oder auch Kritischen Theorie, vor allem vertreten durch Jürgen Habermas, Theodor Adorno und Max Horkheimer, die deutlich stärker rezipiert werden. Die politische Differenz wird hingegen hauptsächlich in Frankreich untersucht, unter anderem durch Claude Lefort, Jean-Luc Nancy, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe und Anderen, die vor allem das Verhältnis zwischen dem Politischen und der Politik untersuchen und somit einen anderen Zugang zum Forschungsgebiet der Politik- und Demokratietheorien wählen, der weniger normativ und deutlich offener gestaltet ist. Diese Unterschiede zwischen beiden Ansätzen führen zu einer Diskrepanz im Umgang mit den Theorien der französischen Theoretiker, obwohl gerade hier viele Problematiken, mit denen sich die deutsche Politikwissenschaft beschäftigt, hier eine oftmals tiefergehende Behandlung erfahren. Dazu kommt, dass die Begründer der Kritischen Theorie in Deutschland einen vergleichsweise prominenten Status besitzen, wohingegen die französischen Theoretiker zwar in Fachkreisen sicherlich bekannt sind, ansonsten kaum in Erscheinung treten. Um die Differenzen dieser beiden Richtungen von Politikwissenschaft zu verstehen, beginnt diese Arbeit mit den verschiedenen Interpretationsarten von politischer Differenz, um die es hier hauptsächlich gehen soll. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, diese Differenzen, ausgehend von unterschiedlichen Definitionen der politischen Differenz, also der Differenz zwischen der Politik und dem Politischen herauszustellen, miteinander zu vergleichen und daraus systematische Unterschiede zwischen der Frankfurter Schule und der politischen Philosophie der französischen Politikwissenschaft zu erarbeiten. Dazu werden zuerst verschiedene Interpretationsarten der politischen Differenz verschiedener Autoren vorgestellt und auf Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede untersucht. Zum Schluss soll ein Ausblick auf Ähnlichkeiten mit der Kritischen Theorie, die in Deutschland vorherrschend ist, gegeben werden, wobei auch die Rolle des Diskurses um den Begriff der politischen Differenz beleuchtet werden soll.

Rather than focusing on waste and trash as the primary objects of study, discard studies looks at wider systems of waste and wasting to explore how some materials, practices, regions, and people are valued or devalued, becoming dominant or disposable. In this book, Max Liboiron and Josh Lepawsky argue that social, political, and economic systems maintain power by discarding certain people, places, and things. They show how the theories and methods of discard studies can be applied in a variety of cases, many of which do not involve waste, trash, or pollution. Liboiron and Lepawsky consider the partiality of knowledge and offer a theory of scale, exploring the myth that most waste is municipal solid waste produced by consumers; discuss peripheries, centers, and power, using content moderation as an example of how dominant systems find ways to discard; and use theories of difference to show that universalism, stereotypes, and inclusion all have politics of discard and even purification—as exemplified in “inclusive” efforts to broaden the Black Lives Matter movement. Finally, they develop a theory of change by considering “wasting well,” outlining techniques, methods, and propositions for a justice-oriented discard studies that keeps power in view.

Germany is the birthplace of radical ideologies of the left and right and the only country in which each ideology became the foundation of government. This pattern left its stamp on both the first and second halves of the century. Considering these contradictory developments, Herbert tackles the questions of both the collapse in the first half of the century and the development from a post-fascist, ruined society to one of the most stable liberal democracies in the world in the latter half. Herbert's analysis brings together wars and terror, utopia and politics, capitalism and the welfare state, socialism and liberal democratic society, gender and generations, culture and lifestyles, European integration and globalization. The resulting book sets a standard by which historians of the period will be measured in the future.
