Ich fand nicht nur, dass diese Blume Saft hat, sondern auch, dass dieser Saft gegen den Regen völlig gesichert ist. Zugleich aber fiel mir der gelbe Ring auf, welcher die Oefl'nung der Kronenröhre umgiebt, und gegen die himmelblaue Farbe des Kronensaums so schön ab sticht. Sollte wohl, dachte ich, dieser Umstand sich auch auf die Insekten beziehen? Sollte die Natur wohl diesen Ring zu dem Ende besonders gefärbt haben, damit derselbe den Insekten den Weg zum Safthalter zeige? Ich betrachtete in Rücksicht auf diese Hypothese andere Blumen, und fand, dass die meisten sie bestätigten. Denn ich sah, dass die jenigen Blumen, deren Krone an einer Stelle anders gefärbt ist, als sie überhaupt ist, diese Flecken, Figuren, Linien oder Düpfel von besonderer Farbe immer da haben, wo sich der Eingang zum Safthalter befindet. Nun schloss ich vom Theil auf das Ganze. Wenn, dachte ich, die Krone der In sekten wegen an einer besonderen Stelle besonders gefärbt ist, so ist sie überhaupt der Insekten wegen gefärbt; und wenn jene besondere Farbe eines Theils der Krone dazu dient, dass ein Insekt, welches sich auf die Blume gesetzt hat, den rechten Weg zum Saft leicht finden könne, so dient die Farbe der Krone dazu, dass die mit einer solchen Krone versehenen Blumen den ihrer Nahrung wegen in der Luft umherschwär menden Insekten, als Saftbehältnisse, schon von weitem in die Augen fallen.
