Book Strategic Market Expansions in the Rail Freight Sector DB Schenker Rail s Acquisition of PCC Rail in Poland

Download or read book Strategic Market Expansions in the Rail Freight Sector DB Schenker Rail s Acquisition of PCC Rail in Poland written by Hendrik Lemke and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study at hand deals with the performance analysis of a globally operating service provider after a completed market expansion in an international context. This subject is elucidated by reference to the example of DB Schenker Rail's entry into the Polish rail freight market through the acquisition of PCC Rail. First, the Polish rail freight market is analyzed from an industry perspective based on Michael Porter's Five Forces model to identify the forces acting upon a company and the estimated profitability of the respective industry. Subsequently, a statement on whether the results of the overall industry are in alignment with the example DB Schenker Rail is made. The term profitability is operationalized through the introduction of the profit margin and the respective profit margins are checked against each other. By means of this result, and the inclusion of other quantitative and qualitative performance measures, a conclusive statement is made on whether DB Schenker Rail's market entry in Poland can be considered a success.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, this volume is an invaluable study of a railway system and its adjustment to changing political-geographical conditions, as well as changes in economic and social geography. Each change in the territorial extent or in the internal territorial-administrative organisation of Germany has had its repercussions upon the spatial pattern of the country’s economy and consequently upon the demand for transport. Furthermore, the central position of Germany within the continent has given an added importance to the role of its railways in the overall pattern of the European railway system. For the transport geographer the comparisons and contrasts with the British railway system are particularly insightful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State-owned enterprises make up roughly 10 percent of the world economy, yet they are woefully understudied. This handbook offers the first synthesis of the topic since the 1980s and offers a comprehensive reference for a generation. The authors provide a detailed explanation of the theory that underpins the expansion of state-owned enterprises in the 21st century. Each chapter delivers an overview of current knowledge, as well as identifying issues and relevant debates for future research. The authors explain how state-owned enterprises are used in both developed and developing countries and offer an insight into complex and fascinating organizations such as the German municipal conglomerates or the multinational companies owned by states. New modes of governance and regulation have been invented to make sure they act in the public interest. This handbook brings together a wealth of international scholars, offering multiple theoretical perspectives to help shape a brave new world. It will be of interest to teachers and students of Economics, Public Administration and Business, academics, established researchers and PhD students seeking rigorous literature reviews on specific aspects of SOEs, as well as practitioners and decision makers in international organizations.

Book Refining Regulatory Regimes

Download or read book Refining Regulatory Regimes written by David Coen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With regulation seeking to foster competition at the same time as also having to protect essential services, the authors investigate regulatory styles, costs of new regulatory functions and how firms in the new regulatory landscape access and influence regulatory authorities. The authors consider how EU pressures may hinder or help the functioning of new regulatory markets and the establishment of business-regulator relationships, as well as the broader policy implications for these new regulatory environments. The book also determines how regulatory authorities emerge and evolve under different state traditions and assesses, over time, the degree to which there is potential for convergence, divergence and continued differences as regulatory functions mature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation Amid Pandemics: Practices and Policies is the first reference on pandemics (especially COVID-19) in the context of transport, logistics, and supply chains. This book investigates the relationships between pandemics and transport and evaluates impacts of COVID-19 and effects of policy responses to address them. It explores how to recover from pandemics, reveals governance for immediate policy responses and future innovations, suggests strategies for post-pandemic sustainable and resilient development, shares lessons of COVID-19 policymaking across countries, and discusses how to transform transport systems for a better future. Transportation Amid Pandemics offers transport researchers and policymakers the scientific evidence they need to support their decisions and solutions against pandemics. "Curiosity and research brought me to discover an excellent handbook covering the relations between COVID 19 and the transport reality. It is called "Transportation amid Pandemics –Lessons Learned from COVID-19" and has been published this year. 2022 happens to be the year of the 50th anniversary of the first report to The Club of Rome "The Limits to Growth". The new book covers evidences from all over the world, and offers policy recommendations from a great variety of perspectives". Ernst Ulrich von Weizsaecker Represents the collective efforts of the World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS) Uniquely deals with intertwined issues of pandemics and transport Investigates both successful and problematic policy measures Emphasizes bvidence-based policymaking from cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary perspectives Transfers lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to future generations

Book Groundwater Hydraulics and Pollutant Transport

Download or read book Groundwater Hydraulics and Pollutant Transport written by Randall J. Charbeneau and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2006-09-08 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rigorous and comprehensive text provides fundamental information geared to students in either engineering or natural sciences courses dealing with groundwater. The first four chapters consider subsurface fluid flow, while the remaining twelve chapters cover subsurface contamination and pollutant transport. Charbeneau views the application of groundwater hydraulics and pollutant transport as a quantitative field. Although quantitative methods are exact, the fields of study are usually homogeneous; laboratory and field methods provide estimates for ideal (not real) fields. What impact does the use of ideal fields have on model predictions? The unknown answer places the study of subsurface flow of water and chemical mass transport in a prime position for continued researchand this readily accessible text opens the door to that research. Outstanding features include: Comprehensive, rigorous, and highly accessible coverageIncludes information on groundwater flow, well hydraulics, field methods for parameter estimation, hydrologic relationships between surface water and groundwater hydrology, mass transport of contaminants by advection, diffusion and dispersion, and special problems posed by nonaqueous phase liquids (oils). Strong focus on applicationsEmpowers readers with knowledge and methodologies that they can use in real, day-to-day practices. Includes 66 worked examples and 178 problems integrated throughout. Examination of standard software being used in the industry todayExposes readers to the USGS MODFLOW model (the most widely used numerical simulation model for groundwater flow) and the USGS MOC3D. These models, together with a user interface (MFI), can be downloaded from the Internet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access proceedings volume brings selected, peer-reviewed contributions presented at the Third Stochastic Transport in Upper Ocean Dynamics (STUOD) 2022 Workshop, held virtually and in person at the Imperial College London, UK, September 26–29, 2022. The STUOD project is supported by an ERC Synergy Grant, and led by Imperial College London, the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automatic Control (INRIA) and the French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER). The project aims to deliver new capabilities for assessing variability and uncertainty in upper ocean dynamics. It will provide decision makers a means of quantifying the effects of local patterns of sea level rise, heat uptake, carbon storage and change of oxygen content and pH in the ocean. Its multimodal monitoring will enhance the scientific understanding of marine debris transport, tracking of oil spills and accumulation of plastic in the sea. All topics of these proceedings are essential to the scientific foundations of oceanography which has a vital role in climate science. Studies convened in this volume focus on a range of fundamental areas, including: Observations at a high resolution of upper ocean properties such as temperature, salinity, topography, wind, waves and velocity; Large scale numerical simulations; Data-based stochastic equations for upper ocean dynamics that quantify simulation error; Stochastic data assimilation to reduce uncertainty. These fundamental subjects in modern science and technology are urgently required in order to meet the challenges of climate change faced today by human society. This proceedings volume represents a lasting legacy of crucial scientific expertise to help meet this ongoing challenge, for the benefit of academics and professionals in pure and applied mathematics, computational science, data analysis, data assimilation and oceanography.
