Book Darwen Born Blackburn Bred Growing up in the Age of Affluence

Download or read book Darwen Born Blackburn Bred Growing up in the Age of Affluence written by Paul Laxton and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not a scholarly work of history, nor is it truly a memoir or an autobiography, as I am under no illusions that my life merits that kind of treatment. My standpoint is that of the participant observer, and the backdrop is provided by the proud communities of Blackburn and Darwen, where my family lived, where I was educated, and where I worked before moving on to make my own way in life. I am sure that the experiences I describe will resonate with readers in many other once prosperous industrial areas. The key theme of this book is what is what like to grow up in working class communities during what I have called the Age of Affluence, the thirty years that followed World War Two in which the working people of the United Kingdom for the only time in our industrial history, experienced unbroken full employment and saw their lives transformed as a consequence.

Book 26 Years Behind Bars

Download or read book 26 Years Behind Bars written by Paul Laxton and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written from the perspective of a participant observer. It is not strictly an autobiography or a history, although it has elements of both, as it would fail without them. It is intended for both the general reader and criminal justice professionals. My intention is that the book is educational, showing the prison system over three decades in the context of social, political and organisational change, in particular the impact of the decline of deference, the growth of public managerialism and the rise of political correctness. The trenchant opinions expressed are based on intellectual rumination, observation of human behaviour, and personal and professional experience. I have deliberately chosen a thematic approach for the book so that explanation and information work in tandem, giving a unique insight into the modern prison service and the workings of the public sector.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 1 of 2 A native of Lancashire, and residing there during the greater part of his life, he has been enabled to collect a mass of local traditions, now fast dying from the memories of the inhabitants. It is his object to perpetuate these interesting relics of the past, and to present them in a form that may be generally acceptable, divested of the dust and dross in which the originals are but too often disfigured, so as to appear worthless and uninviting. Download or read book My Generation written by Paul Laxton and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does not claim to be a fully researched history nor is it an autobiography or a memoir although personal experience is invoked at intervals to illustrate the narrative from a sometimes participant observer. It can more accurately be described as a polemic and at times the language is vitriolic for which I make no apology. I am genuinely angry as well as sad about how the educated elite of my generation, the baby boomers, have transformed our country for the worse. The first part of the book examines through the prism of my northern working class background our inheritance and the nature of the world in which we grew up and then takes the reader through the ascendancy of Mrs Thatcher, which is crucial in understanding what follows. The second part of the book begins with an analysis of what constitutes the political class and then examines thematically how the new establishment achieved, wasted and abused power at the expense of those they claimed to represent. The final part of the book optimistically entitled "Power to the People," argues how power can be reclaimed by the electorate from the arrogant political class which dominates our lives at home and in Europe which has systematically conspired to subvert our once vibrant democracy and destroy our national sovereignty.

Book excerpt: Winner of the ARSC’s Award for Best Research (History) in Folk, Ethnic, or World Music (2008) When Jamaican recording engineers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock, Errol Thompson, and Lee “Scratch” Perry began crafting “dub” music in the early 1970s, they were initiating a musical revolution that continues to have worldwide influence. Dub is a sub-genre of Jamaican reggae that flourished during reggae’s “golden age” of the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Dub involves remixing existing recordings—electronically improvising sound effects and altering vocal tracks—to create its unique sound. Just as hip-hop turned phonograph turntables into musical instruments, dub turned the mixing and sound processing technologies of the recording studio into instruments of composition and real-time improvisation. In addition to chronicling dub’s development and offering the first thorough analysis of the music itself, author Michael Veal examines dub’s social significance in Jamaican culture. He further explores the “dub revolution” that has crossed musical and cultural boundaries for over thirty years, influencing a wide variety of musical genres around the globe. Book Dispatches for the New York Tribune

Download or read book Dispatches for the New York Tribune written by Karl Marx and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Marx (1818-1883) is arguably the most famous political philosopher of all time, but he was also one of the great foreign correspondents of the nineteenth century. During his eleven years writing for the New York Tribune (their collaboration began in 1852), Marx tackled an abundance of topics, from issues of class and the state to world affairs. Particularly moving pieces highlight social inequality and starvation in Britain, while others explore his groundbreaking views on the slave and opium trades - Marx believed Western powers relied on these and would stop at nothing to protect their interests. Above all, Marx’s fresh perspective on nineteenth-century events encouraged his readers to think, and his writing is surprisingly relevant today.
