Book Dart and the Squirrels

Download or read book Dart and the Squirrels written by and published by World Castle Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Name's Dart-short for d'Artagnan. You may not think much of a grizzled old German Shepherd with a torn ear and a nasty bite, but, trust me, when you've spent your whole life dogging it out in the pound, you learn appearances can be deceiving. I mean, just look at that squirrel. Nutty, crazy, you name it. If that sly squirrel isn't chewing up Banshee's homework and blaming me, she's stealing my food, following me around the house, stealing my food, biting my tail, and, did I mention the worst part, stealing my food! This is outrageous! A proud purebred-okay, semi-purebred-German Shepherd such as myself can't stand for this! I'll sit. Hey, since you're here, why don't you listen up to my complaints? All my doggy pals like them-and their reviews are a little "ruff."

For 25 years, Outwitting Squirrels has been leading the charge to help bird lovers defend their feeders. This classic defense manual for the besieged birder has been fully updated to deal with the more tech-savvy twenty-first-century squirrel. Spooker poles, Perrier bottles, baffled fishing line, Teflon spray, Vaseline, water bombs, cayenne pepper, and Nixalite—the author has tried them all, and here he regales intrepid bird feeders with his squirrel-thwarting adventures and misadventures.

Book Deadly Dances in the Bornean Rainforest

Download or read book Deadly Dances in the Bornean Rainforest written by Rajindra K. Puri and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two years Rajindra Puri lived and hunted with the Penan Benalui people in the rainforest of eastern Borneo in Indonesia. Here he reports on Penan hunting techniques, the knowledge required to be a successful hunter, and the significance of hunting for Penan communities. A hunt offers the opportunity for younger Penan to learn crucial survival skills, knowledge of the environment, local geography, genealogy, history, and beliefs and values. Songs and stories recount hunting adventures and legends, while ceremonial dances demonstrate the coordination and agility required of the expert hunter. The author makes a case for using active participant-observation, in conjunction with standard ethnobiological research methods, for documenting non-verbal knowledge. Included here are 21 months of hunting records and comprehensive appendices on game species and ethnobiological data. This work will be useful to anthropologists, conservation biologists, and those interested in Indonesian ethnobiology.

Book Hunting with the Twenty Two

Download or read book Hunting with the Twenty Two written by Charles Singer Landis and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect rifle for hunting small game and varmints in settled and semi-settled agricultural and grazing districts should be quiet, safe to shoot there and inexpensive; and, owing to the small size of the vital areas of most of such game, should be superlatively accurate. Its bullet should, whenever possible, either expand and remain in the game, or destroy itself completely upon impact with earth, sod, stones or rock. It should kill well, yet not cause needless mangling or suffering. The .22 caliber rifle, both in the rim fire and in the flatter-shooting center fire, gives the least report, throws the lightest and smallest projectile, is among the most accurate of all calibers, and is the least expensive to shoot. In the .22 long rifle caliber, it is also the easiest to supply with factory ammunition, which can be purchased at nearly any village hardware store. In center fire, it is cheap to reload, has very light recoil, and causes but little annoyance to farmers and stock raisers. In Eastern farming or estate country, the .22 caliber, both rim and center fire, is the quietest and yet the most effective of all our rifle calibers for either field or woods hunting of small game. In short, from the thoroughly practical standpoint of being usable where any sort of rifled firearm may be shot, it has more advantages and fewer disadvantages than any other caliber. Further, the use of a .22 caliber rifle in the field or in the forests is much like the use of a 20 gauge shotgun on quail or a fine fly rod to dangle dry flies before trout or small mouth black bass. It is the equipment of the man of appreciation and discernment who wishes to develop and depend upon skill rather than upon force and smashing power. After all, most of us go hunting for sport. We wish to enjoy ourselves to the full while gunning, consequently we do not wish to be stopped, neither do most of us wish to annoy landowners. Nevertheless, we need a weapon of precision, great mechanical refinement, X-ring accuracy, and yet which is of a type which appeals to those who have substituted skill and ability in hunting and shooting for the 30" killing pattern of the 12 gauge shotgun. The real story of what has been done, can be done, and what you can do if properly equipped and instructed and shooting a splendidly accurate, properly sighted, precision-built .22 caliber rifle in field and forest has never been adequately told in a book exclusively devoted to hunting and shooting small game and varmints with .22 caliber rifles. The author went into this as much as space permitted in 1931 in “.22 Caliber Rifle Shooting,” but that work is now out of print, the issue having become exhausted. This book, by text and illustration, covers the subject. It is in no part a work of fiction. The shooting related in this book actually occurred. It tells you exactly how to hunt successfully, and to shoot each common variety of North American small game and varmints, where to find them, how to locate and hunt them, and gives numerous examples of rifles and cartridges which produced unusual results. For the youth or the man with his first .22 caliber rifle, for the small bore target shot who has enjoyed only one-half of an experience with a .22 rifle (the remaining half to be found afield), and for the crank rifleman, reloader, small bore ballistics shark and experimenter, this book is a must. Read this work in the spirit in which it was written, that of sportsmen writing one to another; of old timers in the game of field shooting giving their experiences, their hunting lore, their ammunition developments, their misses and their long range hits. This is the book for any small game and varmint hunter who has a rifle and wants to use it more successfully. If you can read this work without learning anything about hunting with the small caliber rifle, you certainly know game shooting with the .22 rifle. May it bring you many happy days in the field.

Book The Six Minute Memoir

Download or read book The Six Minute Memoir written by Mary Helen Stefaniak and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short essays delivers more joy than many books twice its size. Each essay invites readers into the ordinary life of a woman "with a family and friends and a job . . . and a series of cats and a history living in one old house after another at the turn of the twenty-first century in the middle of the Middle West." Writing prompts at the end of the book invite readers to search their own lives for such moments--the kind that could be forgotten but instead are turned, by the gift of perspective and perfectly chosen detail, into treasure. The Six-Minute Memoir encourages people to tell their own stories even if they think they don't have the kind of story that belongs in a memoir.

  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Kul tura Kosmosa written by Andrew Thomas and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis argues that there is a popular culture of space exploration characteristic of a wider Russia; its roots lie in pagan times and it grew through Orthodox Christianity and Soviet Communism to the twenty-first century, where it is actively promoted by Russia and neighbouring nations. The key influences stem from Nikolai Fedorov, Kontsantin Tsiolkovsky, Friedrich Tsander and Yuri Gagarin. The narrative of the twentieth-century Soviet space programme is considered from this perspective and the cultural importance of Tsiolkovsky to this programme is acknowledged. This is an alternative perspective to the commonly-held Western view of the "Space Race". The manipulation of imagery and ritual of space exploration by Russia and other neighbouring nations is examined, and the effect on the "collective remembering" in modern Russia of key events in Russian space exploration is tested.
