Book excerpt: In The Dark Room, the experiences of three people are evoked with stunning emotional depth and psychological authenticity. A boy born with a physical deformity finds work as a photographer's assistant during the 1930s and captures on film the changing temper of Berlin, the city he loves. But his acute photographic eye never provides him with the power to understand the significance of what he sees through his camera. In the weeks following Germany's surrender, a teenage girl whose parents are both in Allied captivity takes her younger siblings on a terrifying, illegal journey through the four zones of occupation in search of her grandmother. Many years after the event, a young man trying to discover why the Russians imprisoned his grandfather for nine years after the war meets resistance at every turn; the only person who agrees, reluctantly, to help him has his own tainted past to contend with. With dazzling originality and to profound effect, Rachel Seiffert has recreated one of the darkest moments of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: By the acclaimed Dutch author of Beyond Sleep: a thriller set in Nazi occupied Holland: “fast-moving, frighteningly real yet verging on the incredible” (Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being). During the German occupation of Holland, tobacconist Henri Osewoudt is visited by a mysterious man named Dorbeck—a man who bears a strangely striking resemblance to Osewoudt himself. Dorbeck recruits him to perform simple, but top-secret missions on orders from London. But as the assignments keep coming, they get increasingly dangerous. Soon Osewoudt is being asked to commit murder in the name of Gestapo resistance. After the war, Osewoudt is taken for a traitor and captured. To prove his sacrifices for the Resistance, he must find the untraceable doppelgänger in an existential thriller “crackling with tension . . . bringing to mind Camus and the Sartre of Les Chemins de la Liberté” (The Telegraph). “Striking, suspenseful . . . Brilliant.” —The Observer

Book excerpt: Snapshots taken by American soldiers of Iraqi prisoners stripped naked, humiliated and tortured shocked the world in 2004 and more have followed from the conflict in Afghanistan, but whether the public have been horrified by the soldiers' conduct or the fact they have taken pictures has not been clear. In fact, as this remarkable book reveals and relates, soldiers have taken photographs of war and its atrocities for more than 100 years. But their pictures are private, intended mainly for the soldiers themselves, as mementoes or as attempts to make sense of the chaos, brutality and boredom of war. They can be gruesome or sociable, shocking or mundane and they are seldom regarded as serious contributions to a visual culture of war, which since 1939 has been dominated by professional war photography. But with the 21st-century shift to simple digital photography, transmission by the internet available to all, and a new 'citizen journalism', soldiers' pictures are acquiring a new resonance."Private Pictures" traces this unacknowledged genre of photography from the origins of popular photography in the Boer War through to the present day; it discusses how the images have been used and it asks: what effect might the wider appreciation of soldiers' pictures have on the popular perception of war?

Book excerpt: The pages of this book vividly conjure up the sights and smells and sounds of Martinez’s adventures in Korea. He enthusiastically spent every free moment traveling everywhere, taking hundreds of photographs, teaching himself to speak, read, and write the language. Nothing escaped his youthful eyes, from ancient temples to rice planting and harvesting to little known facets of the country’s rich 5,000 year old culture. His exuberance with each of his discoveries is faithfully recorded, as are the familiar things we all felt—homesickness and fear, camaraderie and purpose. If you want to see the Korea of forty-five years ago through the bright eyes of a nineteen-year old soldier from Texas with a truly remarkable memory for every detail, this is the best way to do it.—William Roskey, Author of MUFFLED SHOTS: A Year on the DMZ

Book In the Shadow of Danger

Download or read book In the Shadow of Danger written by Gary Dean Ford and published by . This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First, he was a soldier. Robert Spangler, a combat correspondent, spent a year in Vietnam and followed the infantry into the field to find and destroy the enemy. He carried his notebook. He carried his camera. And he carried his M16. He would fight, as he was trained to do, but his first job with 10th Public Information Detachment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division (Americal), was to document the lives of soldiers around him in words and images. Back at his base, LZ Hawk Hill, he processed his film in a packing crate as a makeshift darkroom with no running water, and wrote, on a manual typewriter, scores of stories about soldiers serving a year in the shadow of danger. Bob completed his 1970-71 tour of duty, brought home his camera and 500 images, and took up the rest of his life.
