Book A Decade of Dark Humor

Download or read book A Decade of Dark Humor written by Ted Gournelos and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Decade of Dark Humor analyzes ways in which popular and visual culture used humor-in a variety of forms-to confront the attacks of September 11, 2001 and, more specifically, the aftermath. This interdisciplinary volume brings together scholars from four countries to discuss the impact of humor and irony on both media discourse and tangible political reality. Furthermore, it demonstrates that laughter is simultaneously an avenue through which social issues are deferred or obfuscated, a way in which neoliberal or neoconservative rhetoric is challenged, and a means of forming alternative political ideologies. The volume's contributors cover a broad range of media productions, including news parodies (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, The Onion), TV roundtable shows (Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher), comic strips and cartoons (Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks, Jeff Danzinger's editorial cartoons), television drama (Rescue Me), animated satire (South Park), graphic novels (Art Spiegelman's In the Shadow of No Towers), documentary (Fahrenheit 9/11), and other productions. Along with examining the rhetorical methods and aesthetic techniques of these productions, the essays place each in specific political and journalistic contexts, showing how corporations, news outlets, and political institutions responded to-and sometimes co-opted-these forms of humor.

Book excerpt: Throughout history’s darkest times, people have exhibited a particular type of humor: dark humor, also known as black humor, black comedy, dark comedy, or gallows humor. That’s my favorite kind. I like absurd, random stuff. But with a dark twist. Black humor makes fun of the things that terrify us. It’s a coping mechanism. Some people think death is taboo as a topic for jokes. But every stand up comic and every cartoonist knows that taboo jokes get the biggest laughs, the guilty laughs, and the biggest dopamine release. Humor is not supposed to be polite. It’s supposed to mock bad things. Here’s a little selection of some of my favorite cartoons, about life’s painful little absurdities that make me laugh. “I laugh because I must not cry, that is all, that is all.” -Abraham Lincoln "If you're a fan of Gary Larson's The Far Side, you'll love Gaspirtz's Dark Humor." -Not Abraham Lincoln

Take your pick.” —Washington Post According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. "So delicious that it feels illicit . . . Raven Leilani’s first novel reads like summer: sentences like ice that crackle or melt into a languorous drip; plot suddenly, wildly flying forward like a bike down a hill." —Jazmine Hughes, The New York Times Book Review No one wants what no one wants. And how do we even know what we want? How do we know we’re ready to take it? Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties—sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage—with rules. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren’t hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and invited into Eric’s home—though not by Eric. She becomes a hesitant ally to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie may be the only Black woman young Akila knows. Irresistibly unruly and strikingly beautiful, razor-sharp and slyly comic, sexually charged and utterly absorbing, Raven Leilani’s Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make sense of her life—her hunger, her anger—in a tumultuous era. It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent, and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way. “An irreverent intergenerational tale of race and class that’s blisteringly smart and fan-yourself sexy.” —Michelle Hart, O: The Oprah Magazine

They push the boundaries of socially acceptable jokes, but their humor becomes increasingly twisted. They plan to stage a mock murder in an abandoned mental institution, which makes Samuel uncomfortable, but he goes along with it. However, during the setup, Samuel sees a pair of glowing red eyes in the darkness, and his friends reveal it was all part of the joke. Samuel is locked in a room and realizes his love for dark humor has led him down a path of madness. He escapes but is haunted by nightmares. His friends invite him back to the mental institution, where they reveal their true psychopathic nature and try to kill him. Samuel narrowly escapes with the help of the creature with glowing red eyes. He vows to never cross the line between dark humor and true horror again. Samuel, who had escaped the clutches of his former friends in an abandoned mental institution, finds himself in a dark and eerie forest. He is haunted by the feeling of being watched and is unsure who he can trust. The creature with glowing red eyes, who had saved him before, reappears and warns him that his former friends are still after him. Samuel takes refuge in a cabin but is attacked by a werewolf. To his surprise, the werewolf helps heal his wounds and reveals that they share a common enemy. Samuel and the werewolf prepare to face his former friends, who have found them in the cabin. In this thrilling story, Samuel finds himself in a life-or-death situation as he faces off against his former friends who have turned into dangerous creatures. With the help of a werewolf, Samuel fights to survive and escape the chaos. They encounter unexpected allies and enemies along the way, and as they navigate through dark woods and hidden tunnels, they must confront their own fears and trust in each other to stay alive. As the game they are caught in becomes more twisted and dangerous, Samuel and the werewolf must find a way to outsmart their adversaries and emerge victorious. In this text, Samuel and his mysterious companion navigate through various dark and eerie settings, encountering hooded figures and supernatural entities. Samuel embraces the darkness within him and finds a sense of belonging with his companion. They explore abandoned places, including an amusement park and an old hospital, and encounter both terrifying and joyful experiences. Samuel realizes that he can find happiness in both the light and the darkness, and he learns to balance the two. Despite facing challenges and feeling a sense of unease, Samuel remains determined to face whatever horrors await him. Samuel and his companion find themselves in a series of encounters with the Keepers of the Dark, a group of hooded figures who worship darkness and seek to bring about a new age of darkness. They face off against the Keepers in various locations, including an abandoned hotel and a sealed room with strange symbols. Along the way, they encounter strange creatures and experience the influence of dark energy. Despite their efforts to defeat the Keepers, they realize that the darkness is still present and that they must continue their journey to confront it. They encounter whispers, glowing red eyes, and more encounters with the Keepers, but they also find allies, including a werewolf. Together, they face the Keepers in their headquarters and manage to temporarily repel them. However, they are warned that the Keepers will not give up easily and that they must remain vigilant. In this text, Samuel, Emily, and Isaac have just defeated the Keepers of the Dark but quickly realize that their battle against darkness is far from over. They encounter a monster hunter named Hunter, who joins their group. As they continue their journey, they find themselves in the lair of the Cult of the Dark, surrounded by its members. The leader of the cult, Vlad, claims to have something they need. In this text, Samuel and his friends encounter a small, glowing crystal that promises ultimate power. However, they soon realize that the crystal's owner, Vlad, cannot be trusted. They manage to escape his trap and find themselves in a beautiful garden where they bond over laughter and camaraderie. They continue their journey, facing haunted mansions, a desolate wasteland, and a pack of werewolves. Along the way, they make a deal with an old woman that grants them dark power but curses them with lycanthropy. As they struggle to control their newfound instincts, they find themselves faced with the temptation to harm innocent people. The guilt begins to consume them, and they question the consequences of their actions. In this text, Samuel and his former friends are haunted by a curse and the darkness that surrounds them. They engage in battles, encounter strange creatures, and face the temptation of power and immortality. Despite their efforts to escape, the darkness continues to pursue them, leading to further encounters and challenges. They strive to find a way to rid themselves of the curse and the darkness, but their journey is filled with danger and uncertainty. As they battle against the darkness and its creatures, they realize they are hopelessly outnumbered. However, Jack refuses to give up hope and tries to bring Samuel back from the darkness. Eventually, they defeat the darkness and continue their journey to find the source of the darkness. Along the way, they face numerous challenges and obstacles, but their determination remains unwavering. They finally reach the heart of the darkness and engage in a fierce battle against a monstrous creature. After a long and grueling fight, they emerge victorious. However, they soon encounter an eerie silence and a feeling of dread. They stumble upon a stone archway that leads them to a twisted and horrifying world. They confront the source of the darkness, a monstrous entity, and engage in a final battle. They emerge triumphant but forever changed. In the end, they find solace in a cottage, but soon realize that something is amiss. The old woman they encounter turns out to be dangerous, and they witness her demise. The story ends with a sense of foreboding as they continue their journey, knowing that there is still darkness to face. The woman introduced herself as Evelyn, a former member of the Keepers of the Dark who had managed to escape their clutches. She explained that she had been tracking Samuel and his group, knowing that they were the key to stopping the Keepers once and for all. Evelyn led Samuel and his companions to a hidden underground lair, where they found a group of rebels who were also fighting against the Keepers. They were a diverse group, each with their own unique abilities and skills. Together, they formed a plan to infiltrate the Keepers' stronghold and put an end to their reign of terror. They knew it would be dangerous, but they were willing to risk everything to save themselves and the world from the darkness that threatened to consume it. As they prepared for the final battle, Samuel couldn't help but feel a mix of fear and determination. He knew that the odds were against them, but he also knew that they had come too far to give up now. With Evelyn and the rebels by his side, Samuel faced his greatest challenge yet. The battle was fierce and intense, with both sides fighting with everything they had. But in the end, it was Samuel and his companions who emerged victorious. The Keepers of the Dark were defeated, their power broken. Samuel and his group had saved the world from their malevolent influence. But the victory came at a great cost. Many lives were lost, and Samuel couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and grief for those who had fallen. As the dust settled, Samuel and his companions stood together, battered and bruised but filled with a sense of hope. They had proven that even in the face of darkness, there was always a glimmer of light. And so, Samuel and his group continued their journey, knowing that there would always be new challenges and dangers to face. But they also knew that as long as they stood together, they would never be alone. Samuel and his companions, along with the woman with the decapitated head, regrouped and discussed their next steps in stopping the Keepers of the Dark. They decided to research the history of the mansion to find clues about the portal. However, they knew they had to be cautious as the Keepers were aware of their investigation. Samuel and Emily continue their journey to defeat the Keepers of the Dark. They stumble upon a peaceful village where they gather information about the Keepers' past defeat. Feeling optimistic, they find an inn to rest for the night and enjoy a moment of peace. Samuel is determined to make things right and defeat the Keepers once and for all. Samuel and Emily continued their journey through the forest, their senses on high alert. They couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, and the presence of the creature they had encountered earlier lingered in their minds. As they walked, the forest grew darker and more foreboding. The trees twisted and contorted, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. The air grew heavy with an eerie silence, broken only by the sound of their footsteps. Suddenly, a rustling noise came from the bushes nearby. Samuel and Emily froze, their hearts pounding in their chests. They drew their weapons, ready to defend themselves against whatever was lurking in the shadows. Out of the bushes emerged a figure, its body covered in tattered robes. It was an old man, his face weathered and lined with wisdom. He approached them cautiously, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "Who are you?" Samuel asked, his voice filled with suspicion. The old man smiled kindly. "I am the Guardian of the Forest," he replied. "I have been watching over this place for centuries." Samuel and Emily exchanged glances, unsure of whether to trust the old man. But something about his presence felt comforting, and they decided to hear what he had to say. "The darkness that you have encountered," the old man continued, "it is not of this world. It is a force that seeks to consume everything in its path." He paused, his eyes filled with a deep sadness. "Long ago, there was a great battle between the forces of light and darkness. The darkness was sealed away, but it seems that it is now trying to break free." Samuel and Emily listened intently, their curiosity piqued. The old man's words resonated with them, and they felt a sense of purpose stirring within their hearts. "You two," the old man said, his voice filled with urgency, "you have been chosen to be the champions of light. It is up to you to stop the darkness from spreading and save our world." Samuel and Emily exchanged determined looks. They knew that this was their calling, their chance to make a difference in the face of overwhelming darkness. "We won't let you down," Samuel said, his voice filled with determination. The old man nodded, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "Remember, the power of light resides within you. Trust in yourselves, and you will prevail." With those final words, the old man disappeared into the forest, leaving Samuel and Emily with a renewed sense of purpose. They continued their journey, their hearts filled with a newfound determination. They knew that the road ahead would be difficult, but they were ready to face whatever challenges lay in their path. Together, they would fight against the darkness and bring light back to their world. Their adventure was just beginning, and they were prepared to embrace the unknown with open hearts and unwavering courage. Samuel and Emily find themselves haunted by the presence of a dark creature and the ominous papers they discovered. They stumble upon the Cult of the Dark, a group they had been warned about, and are surrounded by its members. Just as they fear the worst, Vlad, a man they had met before, appears and uses a glowing crystal to transport them to a twisted realm. In this realm, they are tempted by a seductive voice but choose to trust Vlad. Armed with their own crystals, they confront the cult members and manage to escape. They return to the abandoned mental institution where their journey began, knowing that their battle against the darkness is far from over. As they leave the twisted realm, they are met by a circle of animals and a massive black wolf. The wolf communicates with them telepathically before disappearing, leaving them with a sense of relief and a determination to face any future horrors together.

Book Anthology of Black Humor

Download or read book Anthology of Black Humor written by André Breton and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first publication in English of the anthology that contains Breton’s definitive statement on l’humour noir, one of the seminal concepts of Surrealism, and his provocative assessments of the writers he most admired. While some of the authors featured in The Anthology of Black Humor are already well known to American readers—Swift, Kafka, Rimbaud, Poe, Lewis Carroll, and Baudelaire among them (and even then, Breton’s selections are often surprising)—many others are sure to come as a revelation. The entries range from the acerbic aphorisms of Swift, Lichtenberg, and Duchamp to the theatrical slapstick of Christian Dietrich Grabbe, from the wry missives of Rimbaud and Jacques Vache to the manic paranoia of Dali, from the ferocious iconoclasm of Alfred Jarry and Arthur Craven to the offhand hilarity of Apollinaire at his most spontaneous. For each of the forty-five authors included, Breton has provided an enlightening biographical and critical preface, situating both the writer and the work in the context of black humor—a partly macabre, partly ironic, and often absurd turn of spirit that Breton defined as "a superior revolt of the mind." "Anthologies can aim to be groundbreaking or thought-provoking; few can be said to have introduced a new phrase—or a new concept—into the language. No one had ever used the term "black humour" before this one came along, unless, perhaps, it was from a racial angle."—The Guardian Andre Breton (1896-1966), the founder and principal theorist of the Surrealist movement, is one of the major literary figures of the past century. His best-known works in English translation include Nadja, Mad Love, The Manifestoes of Surrealism, The Magnetic Fields (with Philippe Soupault), and Earthlight. Mark Polizzotti is the author of Revolution of the Mind: The Life of Andre Breton.

Book The Dark Side of Stand Up Comedy

Download or read book The Dark Side of Stand Up Comedy written by Patrice A. Oppliger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the “dark side” of stand-up comedy, initially inspired by speculations surrounding the death of comedian Robin Williams. Contributors, those who study humor as well as those who perform comedy, join together to contemplate the paradoxical relationship between tragedy and comedy and expose over-generalizations about comic performers’ troubled childhoods, addictions, and mental illnesses. The book is divided into two sections. First, scholars from a variety of disciplines explore comedians’ onstage performances, their offstage lives, and the relationship between the two. The second half of the book focuses on amateur and lesser-known professional comedians who reveal the struggles they face as they attempt to hone successful comedy acts and likable comic personae. The goal of this collection is to move beyond the hackneyed stereotype of the sad clown in order to reveal how stand-up comedy can transform both personal and collective tragedies by providing catharsis through humor.

Book Raymond Carver s Short Fiction in the History of Black Humor

Download or read book Raymond Carver s Short Fiction in the History of Black Humor written by Jingqiong Zhou and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length study on the black humor in Raymond Carver's work includes valuable interpretations of Carver's aesthetics as well as the psycho-social implications of his short fiction. The presence of an indeterminate «menace» in the oppressive situations of black humor in Carver - as compared to a European tradition of existentialist writing and his American predecessors including Twain, Heller, Barth and others - is mitigated through humor so it is not dominant. As a result, a subtle promise emerges in the characters' lives.
