Book Dark Tourism and Crime

Download or read book Dark Tourism and Crime written by Derek Dalton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark tourism has become widespread and diverse. It has passed into popular culture vernacular, deployed in guide books as a short hand descriptor for sites that are associated with death, suffering and trauma. However, whilst books have been devoted to dark tourism as a general topic no single text has sought to explore dark tourism in spaces where crime - mass murder, genocide, State sanctioned torture and violence - has occurred as an organising theme. Dark Tourism and Crime explores the socio-cultural contours of this unique type of tourism and explains why spaces/places where crime has occurred fascinate and attract tourists. The book is marked by an ethics of respect for the suffering a place has experienced and an imperative to learn something tangible about the history and legacy of that suffering. Based on empirical ethnographic research it takes the reader from the remnants of Auschwitz concentration camp to the tranquil Australian island of Tasmania to explore precisely what things a dark tourist might encounter - architecture, art installations, gardens, memorials, physical traces of crime - and how these things invoke and evoke past crimes. This volume furthers understanding of dark tourism and will be of interest to students, researchers and academics of criminology, tourism and cultural studies.

Book Redefining Success in America

Download or read book Redefining Success in America written by Michael Kaufman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work hard in school, graduate from a top college, establish a high-paying professional career, enjoy the long-lasting reward of happiness. This is the American Dream—and yet basic questions at the heart of this competitive journey remain unanswered. Does competitive success, even rarified entry into the Ivy League and the top one percent of earners in America, deliver on its promise? Does realizing the American Dream deliver a good life? In Redefining Success in America, psychologist and human development scholar Michael Kaufman develops a fundamentally new understanding of how elite undergraduate educations and careers play out in lives, and of what shapes happiness among the prizewinners in America. In so doing, he exposes the myth at the heart of the American Dream. Returning to the legendary Harvard Student Study of undergraduates from the 1960s and interviewing participants almost fifty years later, Kaufman shows that formative experiences in family, school, and community largely shape a future adult’s worldview and well-being by late adolescence, and that fundamental change in adulthood, when it occurs, is shaped by adult family experiences, not by ever-greater competitive success. Published research on general samples shows that these patterns, and the book’s findings generally, are broadly applicable to demographically varied populations in the United States. Leveraging biography-length clinical interviews and quantitative evidence unmatched even by earlier landmark studies of human development, Redefining Success in America redefines the conversation about the nature and origins of happiness, and about how adults develop. This longitudinal study pioneers a new paradigm in happiness research, developmental science, and personality psychology that will appeal to scholars and students in the social sciences, psychotherapy professionals, and serious readers navigating the competitive journey.

Book excerpt: Adam Phillips is an aging intelligence asset. Contrary to his three decades long career, his understanding of the world’s power structure grew into the realization he’d been aiding a secret cabal of global elite in advancing their agenda of world domination. With that control came the necessity of the five families, who’d held global hegemony for a millennium, to eliminate eighty percent of the world’s population through a plan code-named Project Trinity. The project is meant to bring to fruition the maintaining of the human population at a mere half-million, as prescribed on the Georgia Guidestones in 1980. An accident eighteen months earlier took the lives of Adam’s wife, son, and daughter-in-law; leaving him alone to raise his granddaughter, who’d been adopted from Guatemala. Where he’d failed his son, he vowed to educate Maritza to the evil that roamed the earth; an understanding he’d been ignorant of his entire life. Allowed to act as a lone assassin during the final decade of his career, Adam’s superiors hoped he’d catch a bullet. Wet work without association offered the United States’ arm of the global power structure plausible deniability. Frustrated by his continued survival, Adam’s handlers sent a young colleague on an assignment in Key West with Phillips. Their job was to assassinate a captured Cuban Intelligence officer. Adam Phillips wasn’t meant to make it out alive. Trusting gut instinct, Adam saved the Cuban and murdered his associate, sending he and his granddaughter fleeing for their lives while simultaneously attempting to disarm the potentially genocidal Project Trinity. The odyssey of grandfather and granddaughter brought an awareness of a like-minded group working to stop Trinity, as well their purpose of strengthening the fabric of humanity.
