Book So This Is the Good Old United States of America

Download or read book So This Is the Good Old United States of America written by Ricardo Saclote Morada and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The man came out of the blue. He was a Filipino-American who visited our village in Southern Philippines, a soldier in the US Army who fought the Japanese in Leytejust before the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Forces in the Philippines. He was a former resident of the village who left for America when he was on his early teens. He came to visit but left an indelible mark on the young people's mind about America, the land of opportunity; America, the melting pot of all nations; America, the beautiful. This book recounts the author's fifty odd years adventure in America. It tells of the stark reality of life among the poor; the uncertainty of life among the laboring class; the hardship of stoop labor, earning "from the sweat of thy brow." In contrast to this background, the author tells of the life of a professional in America. This book also tells the stories about the American people, the nature of college life; the lifestyle of the rich, the coeds, the fraternity boys. The author recounts briefly some romantic episodes of a young man in a strange country and people. The author was caught in a maelstrom of social, economic and cultural upheavals in America, including global conflicts.

Book The New Biographical Dictionary of Film

Download or read book The New Biographical Dictionary of Film written by David Thomson and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2010 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomson (independent scholar), writing of The Biographical Dictionary of Film (aka A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema, 1975 edition), described it as "a personal, opinionated, and obsessive biographical dictionary of the cinema." Thirty-five years and several editions later, that description still holds true of this expanded work. The new dictionary summarizes salient facts about its subjects' lives and discusses their film credits in terms of the quality of the filmmakers' work. In ambition it has competitors, including Leslie Halliwell's various editions of Halliwell's Filmgoers Companion (12th ed., 1997) and Halliwell's Who's Who in the Movies, edited by John Walker (4th ed., rev. and updated, 2006), which cover films and technical terms (categories not included in Thomson's), but whose entries are neutral and exceedingly brief. Additionally, Francophile Richard Roud's edited Cinema: A Critical Dictionary: The Major Filmmakers (2 v., 1980) is as passionate a work as Thomson's, but narrower in scope, with entries written by various experts, rather than only by Roud. Finally, the multivolume magnum opus The International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers (4th ed., 2000, ed. by T. Pendergast and S. Pendergast; 2nd ed., ed. by N. Thomas, v. 1, CH, May'91; 1st ed., ed. by C. Lyon, v.1-2, CH, Jan'85, v.3, CH, Apr'87, v.4-5, CH, Jun'88) covers everything--films, directors, actors, writers, and production artists--with generous, measured, scholarly entries and lavish illustrations. However, it looms large and heavy, unlike the handy one-volume work by Thomson. Arguably, Thomson's work, for its scope, is the most fun, the most convenient, and the most engaging title. All libraries supporting people interested in film should buy it. It will get lots of use and provide very good value for the money. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by C. Hendershott.

Book excerpt: A writer’s suicide sends ripples through the world she left behind: “A wonderful book…moving and tender and tough and unsentimental, all at the same time.”—Chicago Tribune An accomplished author with a string of devoted lovers, Anna Hand savors life in all of its bittersweet, fleeting moments. So when she gets a letter and discovers her brother has a daughter he never knew about, she sees a major part of life that has passed her by: a child to love. Desperate to unite this young girl with her father, Anna moves back to Charlotte, North Carolina, to rediscover her family and convince him to accept her. Caught between the politics of her upper-crust family and love for a married man, Anna finds her health in serious danger. When her bad days catch up with her good ones, she must finally face the disease that had been hiding just beneath the surface. Not willing to resign herself to months of aggressive treatment, and knowing the outcome will be the same regardless, she takes matters into her own hands, and surrenders her body to the sea. But it isn't only Anna's death that shocks her family. The papers she left behind may lead her sister Helen to discover more about Anna than she, or any of the Hand family, need to know… "Gilchrist excels in drawing the bonds of love and resentment in sexual and family relationships, and no one who encounters her characters here or in her earlier works will want to miss reading about them again." —Publishers Weekly

Book Immigrants

  • Author : Kent J. McGrew

Download or read book Immigrants written by Kent J. McGrew and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigrants: Volume I – Dragon Tooth Gold Series By: Kent J. McGrew Immigrants: Volume I – Dragon Tooth Gold Series begins the story of Aaden Callahan and Anna Mercier; two landed immigrants. They meet while teaching at Columbia University in New York City. The year is 1841. The young Dr. Callahan woos and wins the heart of the smart and beautiful Anna, but their courtship isn't easy. Kent J. McGrew brings years of industrial experience as a metallurgical engineer to every aspect of his stories. A sailing trip doesn't just take you somewhere, it teaches navigation and the skills to weather hurricanes, fight pirates and outwit the oppressive laws of the day concerning African Americans. Through the eyes of his characters, his readers get to experience America in the mid 1800's where land and resources were in abundance to all who worked with determination. The industrial revolution is robust and the Callahan family shape an empire with whiskey and lumber and a loyal labor force in the form of emancipated slaves. Dragon Tooth gold is uniquely laden with the engineering and technology of the times. Our ancestors worked hard and despite the current feeling that their thinking was old fashion, everything that they did successfully was well thought out, sometimes beyond genius. I want my readers to see our roots in the reality of getting the work done. In our age of information, invention and innovation are all too often taken for granted. Our physical world still needs to be put together piece by piece. Knowing how we got where we are today will help us prevent the mistakes, prejudices, and misconceptions of the past.
