Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danvers State Hospital revolutionized mental health care for more than a century, beginning in 1878. Today, it's buildings still have stories to tell. Perched high on the top of Hathorne Hill in what was once the village of Salem, Danvers State Insane Asylum was, for more than a century, a monument to modern psychiatry and the myriad advances in mental health treatment. From the time it opened its doors in 1878 until they were shuttered for good in 1992, the asylum represented decades of reform, the physical embodiment of the heroic visions of Dorothea Dix and Thomas Story Kirkbride. It would stand abandoned until 2005, when demolition began. Along with a dedicated group of private citizens, the Danvers Historical Society fought to preserve the Kirkbride structure, an effort that would result in the reuse of the administration building and two additional wings. Danvers has earned a unique place in history; the shell of the original Kirkbride building still stands overlooking the town. Though it has been changed drastically, the asylum's story continues as do efforts to memorialize it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1895 there was not a single case of dementia praecox reported in the United States. By 1912 there were tens of thousands of people with this diagnosis locked up in asylums, hospitals, and jails. By 1927 it was fading away . How could such a terrible disease be discovered, affect so many lives, and then turn out to be something else? In vivid detail, Richard Noll describes how the discovery of this mysterious disorder gave hope to the overworked asylum doctors that they could at last explain—though they could not cure—the miserable patients surrounding them. The story of dementia praecox, and its eventual replacement by the new concept of schizophrenia, also reveals how asylum physicians fought for their own respectability. If what they were observing was a disease, then this biological reality was amenable to scientific research. In the early twentieth century, dementia praecox was psychiatry’s key into an increasingly science-focused medical profession. But for the moment, nothing could be done to help the sufferers. When the concept of schizophrenia offered a fresh understanding of this disorder, and hope for a cure, psychiatry abandoned the old disease for the new. In this dramatic story of a vanished diagnosis, Noll shows the co-dependency between a disease and the scientific status of the profession that treats it. The ghost of dementia praecox haunts today’s debates about the latest generation of psychiatric disorders.

Page's maintenance of daily clinics is mentioned in Article II of this series (" The Margin of Error in the Diagnosis of Mental Disease "), where also are reprinted the conclusions of the writer's papers on "Errors in the Diagnosis of General Paresis" and "Anatomical Findings in Senile Dementia," both of which studies are wholly dependent on this system of daily clinics. The following is taken from the writer's discussion (with minor errors corrected) of Dr. Elbert M. Somers' paper before the American Medico-Psychological Association at Atlantic City in 1909, on " The Value of Staff Conferences in State Hospitals." Dr. Southard. -- "I would like to say a word about the economy of this conference system, because lately I have been enjoying the fruits of the daily staff conference at Danvers Hospital in a review of autopsy findings in cases that have been through the daily clinics. I wrote to Dr. Cowles, formerly of McLean Hospital, to learn whether he had any data relating to the time at which this system was adopted, and he has written me a letter concerning the development attained at the McLean Hospital. He assigned the origin of such conferences originally to Germany, to Professor Ranke, who held a seminar for the discussion of historical matters by his pupils. That system has, of course, now spread into a number of our universities. "In 1889, if I remember the date, the conferences were introduced at McLean. These conferences largely had the aspect of meetings at which special topics were considered and occasionally an introduction of patients. And then came in a number of hospitals in Massachusetts and elsewhere the occasional conference, perhaps a weekly conference. "Dr. Page introduced the daily clinic in Middletown, Conn., ...
