Il est impossible de parler de Danton sans parler de parler de Robespierre tellement leurs destins sont liés. Ils ont sensiblement le même âge, Robespierre est né le 6 mai 1758 à Arras. Tout comme Dantin, Robespierre est mort guillotiné place de la Révolution à Paris, le 28 juillet 1794. Tous deux sont les figures emblématiques les plus marquantes de la Révolution française et plus particulièrement de la Terreur (1793-1794). Tous deux viennent de province, tous deux sont avocats, tous deux font de la politique, tous deux sont maître dans l’art de manipuler les esprits pour arriver à leurs fins... Mais les similitudes s’arrêtent là, car tous les oppose à tel point qu’ils vont devenir ennemis mortels. Danton, physiquement, c’est un colosse. Il a une voix de stentor qui fait de lui un redoutable tribun qui sait mobiliser les esprits lorsque la patrie, la Révolution ou la Liberté sont en danger. Danton c’est le Verbe ! Danton c’est la flamboyance. C’est un jouisseur et un sentimental qui aime la vie sous tous ses aspects. A contrario, Robespierre est un être de l’ombre. Il est froid, réservé et distant. S’il ne brille pas par ses talents d’orateur, il est, par contre, un fin stratège en politique qui sait être patient et attendre « son heure ». Pour conclure sur une similitude, tous deux sont morts jeunes, victimes du système qu’ils avaient œuvrés à mettre en place.

Ensuite, sont analysés les regards croisés de ses contemporains, amis, alliés ou adversaires, pour connaître l’homme, privé et public, son charisme et ses faiblesses. L’historien montre enfin comment les mythes de Danton, personnage hors du commun, ont été amplifiés par l’histoire, les médias, les arts, l’enseignement, l’opinion publique. Dépasser les procès d’intention, les légendes, noire ou dorée, de Georges Danton : tel est l’objet de ce livre, au plus près des archives, des témoignages, des coups d’éclat et des failles de cet homme, Danton, qui incarna au plus haut point le destin de sa patrie, dans les avancées comme dans les contradictions d’une Révolution fondatrice.
