Book excerpt: PURGATORY, the mountain that straightens souls made crooked by the world, is Dante's single most conceptually brilliant creation. A remarkable rendering that unearths Dante's muscular and vernacular voice with unprecedented vigor, accuracy, and masterful use of English meter, Esolen's new translation of PURGATORY is part two of his translation of the entire Divine Comedy,. Esolen's introduction is the most interesting of any edition; he explores what Purgatory is theologically, how Dante came to invent it, and how PURGATORY is ultimately about restoration, liberation, and friendship. The unique features Esolen provides, from extensive notes to an appendix of key sources, make this bilingual edition the most illuminating on the market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purgatorio is the second part of Italian poet Dante Alighieri's epic poem Divine Comedy and describes Dante's climb up the Mount of Purgatory. As in the Inferno, the Roman poet Virgil is guiding Dante on a journey; this time they visit the seven terraces of Purgatory, where sinners are cleansing themselves in preparation for entering Paradise. Each of the terraces represents one of the seven deadly sins, ranging from pride to lust. Through this allegory, Dante conveys that repentant souls can be redeemed. Dante wrote his narrative poem between 1308 and 1321. This version is taken from a 1901 English edition, featuring British author Rev. H. F. Cary's blank verse translation and woodcut illustrations by French artist Gustave Doré.

Some translations are so elaborate that they are as difficult to read as the original Italian version. This translation uses the Longfellow translation as a base, but replaces the obscure or antiquated verbiage with the language of Modern English. This translation could easily be read and understood by today's reader. Adding the illustrations by Gustave Dore brings this classic work to life.

THE DIVINE COMEDY continues to be widely read today, whether for its religious inspiration or for the sheer power of its verse. In the second part of the epic, THE PURGATORIO, Dante climbs out of the pit of Hell with the guidance of the ancient Roman poet, Virgil, who then takes him on a journey up the mountain of Purgatory. Here we find the souls of those who died in sin, but whose transgressions have not placed them irredeemably beyond the saving grace of God's mercy. Sooner or later, they WILL reach Heaven. A first-rate English-language rendition of a classic of western literature.

Book The Purgatorio of Dante Alighieri

Download or read book The Purgatorio of Dante Alighieri written by Dante Alighieri and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, and preceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14th century. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, except for the last four cantos at which point Beatrice takes over as Dante's guide. Purgatory in the poem is depicted as a mountain in the Southern Hemisphere, consisting of a bottom section (Ante-Purgatory), seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth (associated with the seven deadly sins), and finally the Earthly Paradise at the top. Allegorically, the Purgatorio represents the penitent Christian life. In describing the climb Dante discusses the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, as well as moral issues in politics and in the Church. The poem outlines a theory that all sins arise from love - either perverted love directed towards others' harm, or deficient love, or the disordered or excessive love of good things.
