Book The Sun and the Other Stars of Dante Alighieri

Download or read book The Sun and the Other Stars of Dante Alighieri written by Sperello Di Serego Alighieri and published by . This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri is the story of a journey across the Universe as it was known in the Middle Ages, a work of science fiction ante litteram. Dante had an encyclopedic mind, no doubt, and his poem is the most widely read book after the Bible. He was a master of the astronomical knowledge of his time, and used astronomy in his work to indicate places, to measure time, and to exemplify beauty. Indeed, in the Convivio, he wrote that science is 'the ultimate perfection of our soul' and 'astronomy -- more than any other science -- is noble and high for a noble and high subject.'We propose a reading of the Divine Comedy through astronomy with a journey starting from the Earth, proceeding to the Moon, the planets, and to the outermost edges of the Universe. The way in which Dante connects ancient astronomy with modern conceptions of the cosmos will astonish readers more than 700 years later.

Book A Book about Myself Called Hell

Download or read book A Book about Myself Called Hell written by Jared Joseph and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the journey of our life Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood but then he founds a whole lot of literary movements and arguably modernity itself with his Divine Comedy that, nonetheless, inexplicably, didn't make God laugh. This serious absence caused God's non-divine counterparts, humans, to wonder: "Why are we in hell?" "Why is it so funny?" "And why can't I laugh?"

Book Dante and the Medieval Other World

Download or read book Dante and the Medieval Other World written by Alison Morgan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-08-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major study of the Divine Comedy, this book offers an interesting perspective on Dante's representation of the afterlife. Alison Morgan departs from the conventional critical emphasis on Dante's place in relation to learned traditions by undertaking a thorough examination of the poem in the context of popular beliefs. Her principal sources are thus not the highly literary texts (such as Virgil's Aeneid or Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologiae) which have become a familiar context for the poem, but rather visions of the Other World found in popular writings, painting and sculpture from the centuries leading up to its composition. The book will be of interest to non-specialists in addition to scholars of Dante, since it offers a clear preliminary account of the Other World tradition, a chronology of its principal representations and summaries of the major texts. Fully illustrated throughout, it integrates with the literary and theological aspects of Dante's heritage the important but often neglected dimension of art history.

Book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri The Inferno

Download or read book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri The Inferno written by Dante Alighieri and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inferno" is the first part of the 14th-century epic poem "Divine Comedy," written by the Italian writer Dante Alighieri. This part preceded the other two - Purgatorio and Paradiso. In the poem, Dante makes a journey through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. There he sees the sufferings of those who have rejected spiritual values. Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torment located within the Earth, with every next circle marked by growing severity of suffering, which also corresponds to the severity of sin undertaken by a soul. The spiritual message of the poem is about the recognition and rejection of sin.

Book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri

Download or read book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri written by Robert M. Durling and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1300s, Dante Alighieri set out to write the three volumes which make the up The Divine Comedy. Purgatorio is the second volume in this set and opens with Dante the poet picturing Dante the pilgrim coming out of the pit of hell. Similar to the Inferno (34 cantos), this volume is divided into 33 cantos, written in tercets (groups of 3 lines). The English prose is arranged in tercets to facilitate easy correspondence to the verse form of the Italian on the facing page, enabling the reader to follow both languages line by line. In an effort to capture the peculiarities of Dante's original language, this translation strives toward the literal and sheds new light on the shape of the poem. Again the text of Purgatorio follows Petrocchi's La Commedia secondo l'antica vulgata, but the editor has departed from Petrocchi's readings in a number of cases, somewhat larger than in the previous Inferno, not without consideration of recent critical readings of the Comedy by scholars such as Lanza (1995, 1997) and Sanguineti (2001). As before, Petrocchi's punctuation has been lightened and American norms have been followed. However, without any pretensions to being "critical", the text presented here is electic and being not persuaded of the exclusive authority of any manuscript, the editor has felt free to adopt readings from various branches of the stemma. One major addition to this second volume is in the notes, where is found the Intercantica - a section for each canto that discusses its relation to the Inferno and which will make it easier for the reader to relate the different parts of the Comedy as a whole.

Book excerpt: Discover this fresh, pacy, modern translation of an enduring literary classic. Halfway through life, you find yourself lost, unsure of the right path. Greed, deception and pride have led you away from the ideals and dreams you cherished in younger days. How do you go on? This is the starting point of one of the most extraordinary and important journeys in western literature, a stunningly ambitious flight of imagination and philosophy which has reverberated down the years since Dante Alighieri first wrote it down in the fourteenth century. The Divine Comedy is a vision of the afterlife, the three regions of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, through which the narrator must journey in order to better understand the workings of the universe, the love of God, and his place in the world. Poet and translator Steve Ellis translated the Inferno in 1994, and it was greeted with great acclaim. Now Ellis's translation of the entire poem is published here for the first time, and Dante's epic can be experienced afresh and in new glorious life and colour, the physicality and immediacy of Dante's verse rendered in English as never before. A NEW TRANSLATION BY STEVE ELLIS
