Book excerpt: Dead Souls by Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol. Attributable to satire - political projects, the main idea of this work was suggested to the author by Pushkin. The main theme of this work is pretty simple and basically doesn't introduce anything new to the Russian literature, is a book based on a circular structure fully built around the main character. Chichikov was created with the finality to stress the weaknesses and pad sides of Russian population and during all the story he perfectly epitomize this negative stereotype. The book was published for the first time in the 1842, at that time the title chosen by the author was "The wonderings of Chichikov, or dead souls" which is still considered as the title which better describe the content of the book. For many reasons this book is described by readers in different times as a masterpiece, most of the comments and critics describe it as pretty different from others books of the Russian literature and admit that this is one of those books that can change your point of view. Originally Gogol used to talk about his own work as a poem, the reason is that into the story rhymes and rhythm are often used to build details around people and objects. Many readers talk about the setting of this book in terms such as hallucinatory reality or surreal reality and the author describes these scenes with an ironic accent that in more than one part arrives to have a bitter taste. As if what said wouldn't be enough to make this book particular the author decided to base the structure of the story on both hidden and clearly shown questions about morality and existence, a theme that in that period was dear to the author as proved by moralistic advices that he used also in different works of those years. Originally the book were supposed to become just the first part of a bigger work about Russia and Russian population, a work which would have had its main source of inspiration in the work of Dante Alighieri and that would have ideally seen low characters in its first part and then gradually more decent people in others. The idea of Gogol to create such a work, anyway, will remain unfinished. Originally the author wrote another book which was supposed to be the second part of this first piece but will be Gogol himself to destroy it before his death.

Download or read book A Confederacy of Dunces written by John Kennedy Toole and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released by Louisiana State University Press in 1980, A Confederacy of Dunces is nothing short of a publishing phenomenon. Rejected by countless publishers and submitted by the author's mother years after his suicide, the book won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Today there are almost two million copies in print worldwide in eighteen languages. Now, for the first time, John Kennedy Toole's comic masterpiece is available in a large print edition. Toole's lunatic and sage novel introduces one of the most memorable characters in American literature, Ignatius Reilly, whom Walker Percy dubs "slob extraordinaire, a mad Oliver Hardy, a fat Don Quixote, a perverse Thomas Aquinas rolled into one." Set in New Orleans, A Confederacy of Dunces outswifts Swift, one of whose essays gives the book its title. As its characters burst into life, they leave the region and literature forever changed by their presence -- Ignatius and his mother; Miss Trixie, the octogenarian assistant accountant at Levi Pants; inept, wan Patrolman Mancuso; Darlene, the Bourbon Street stripper with a penchant for poultry; Jones the jivecat in spaceage dark glasses. Included here is the introduction that writer and New Orleans resident Andrei Codrescu composed for the book's twentieth anniversary. Set in oversized type for ease in reading, the large print edition will gratify both first-timers seeking to discover this modern-day classic and longtime afficionados wishing to reread a favorite novel.
