Excerpt: ...stress) also received Swinburne's marked approval in the same letter. At Kelmscott likewise, towards this date, my brother began his rather long narrative poem of Rose Mary. Its first part was completed by 10th September, and the remainder proceeded rapidly, being finished by the 23rd of the same month. The Sunset Wings, recording the arboreal evolutions of a flock of starlings at Kelmscott, was done in August. It was published in the Athenaum in the spring of 1873, and he then remarked in a letter "the description is most exact." These details suffice to show that Rossetti, having brought out his volume, was not a little inspirited towards continuous poetic production, which, unless interrupted by untoward circumstance, might probably have proceeded much farther than in fact it did. The untoward circumstance, however, was not to be wanting. It came in the shape of the article The Fleshly School of Poetry, written by Mr. Robert Buchanan under the pseudonym of Thomas Maitland, and published in the Contemporary Review. To this affair of The Fleshly School of Poetry--an affair equally trumpery in itself and miserable in its consequences--I have made some reference aforetime, in my preface to the Collected Works of my brother. Suffice it here to say that Rossetti was in the first instance annoyed and partly amused--especially amused at the poor figure which the Contemporary, or its editor, or its contributor, or all three, cut in some newspaper correspondence of the time, wherein the authorship or pseudonymity of the article was shuffled over not a little; but in the sequel, when the same article, in an extended form, was republished as a pamphlet, he was unfortunately very much more annoyed, and not amused at all. On the contrary...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Gabriel Rossetti Nowhere in Time's vista, where the forms of great men gather thickly, do we see many shapes of those who, as painters and as poets have been alike illustrious. Among the few to whom, equally on both accounts, conspicuous honours have been paid, none is superior to Rossetti, of whose genius doubly exalted the artists say that in design he was pre-eminent, while, on the other hand, the most distinguished poets of our age place him in the first rank with themselves. As to this pro digious, if not unique, distinction, of which the present age has not yet, perhaps, formed an adequate judgment, there can be no doubt that with regard to the constructive portion of his genius Rossetti was betterl equipped in verse than in design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Gabriel Rossetti: Painter and Man of Letters So many books, from pens so eminent, have already appeared on the life and work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, that the hazardous experiment of adding to their number could hardly have been made without the direct encouragement of a publisher perhaps too kind. The present monograph cannot claim to contain any new facts or discoveries, the aim of the writer having been to tell the story of Rossetti' 3 life as far as possible in Rossetti' s own words and in the words of the most unimpeachable eye-witnesses of his career and progress; while in criticism it has been his constant endeavour to steer a judicial middle course between the Scylla of infatuation and the Charybdis of irrelevant censure. The reader, then, will readily perceive that there is little in the following pages which cannot be found, with more or less trouble, in. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works Dante Gabriel Rossetti Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as of most authors, would probably be to ofier a broad general view of his writ ings, and to analyze with some critical precision his rela tion to other writers, contemporary or otherwise, and the merits and defects of his performances. In this case. As in how few others, one would also have to consider in what degree his mind worked consentaneously or diversely in two several arts, the art of poetry and the art of painting. But the hand of a brother is not the fittest to undertake any work of this scope. My preface will not therefore deal with themes such as these, but will be confined to minor matters, which may nevertheless be relevant also within their limits. And first may come a very brief outline of the few events of an outwardly uneventful life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dante Gabriel Rossetti: A Record and a Study AT rare intervals in the records of memorable lives we come across the names of men who seem to have been gifted with an almost too disproportionate amount of talent in whatsoever they laid their hands to, men who, like Lionardo da Vinci, take a fore most place amongst their contemporaries, and to whom painting, poetry, literature, or science seem equally familiar. It is very often supposed that diversity of gifts means mediocrity in all, but a glance at the histories of many well-known lives tends to disprove any such supposition, while on the other hand it may be admitted that multiplicity of talents has too Often militated against the due fulfilment of some special bent. Lionardo, one of the most powerful and subtle intellects as well as one of the greatest painters of his time, is an example of one so gifted and at the same time so restrained by temperament and varied interests as never to reach the supreme position in art he might have attained. We know that Michel Angelo was a painter, a sculptor, an architect, and a poet; that Raffaelle's spirit found other than merely pictorial expression; that Dante was an artist as well as the author of an immortal epic; but we never hesitate in deciding the first to. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures, Drawings, Designs and Studies by the Late Dante Gabriel Rossetti: 1883 From the age of eighteen Rossetti attended for some time the school at the Royal Academy. He painted at this time, 1847, the interesting portrait of his father here exhibited (n O. His first Oil Picture. He did not, however, find congenial the teaching then given in the schools, and abandoned them for the studio Of Ford Madox Brown, his senior by some seven years, who had received his artistic training abroad. Towards this artist the young Rossetti was especially attracted by the fine dramatic qualities shown in the Cartoons which the former had recently exhibited for the proposed decorations Of the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. But Rossetti's mind and temperament were too original to admit Of his following in the footsteps Of any master, and he soon attracted round himself a band of young and ardent comrades, with whom he formed, partly in earnest protest against the conventions and commonplace Of the art then prevalent, but partly also in the spirit Of humorous defiance characteristic Of youth, the celebrated pre-raphaelite Brotherhood. A life of Rossetti, in the full sense of the word, could only be written by one who was intimately and sympathetically associated with his work during the major portion of his career; and of the very few who could have under taken the task some are no longer alive, whilst others have either abandoned or postponed it until too late. For this reason we can hardly expect now to have a life of this great and most original genius, written by anyone with enough knowledge to interpret his many-coloured personality, yet sufficiently disinterested to form a critical estimate of his true position and influence.
