The number of definite passages, however, which show evidence of influence on the part of Dante is not so large as in the case of Byron and Shelley. In the Princess we have an allusion to the oft-quoted inscription over the Gate of Hell: How saw you not the inscription on the gate, Let no man enter in on pain of death; the lines in the Two Voices, My frozen heart began to beat, Remembering its ancient heat, seem to be a reminiscence of Lo gel che m' era intorno al cor ristretto, Spirito ed acqua fessi, (Purg., XXX, 97-8, ) and Conosco i segni dell' antica fiamma (ibid., 48). There is a very evident resemblance between Dante's discussion of Fortune1 and the Song of Fortune in Geraint and Enid: 1 Inf., VII, 73 ff., and line 95 of Canto XV: Pert giri fortuna la sua ruota. Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel and lower the proud; Turn thy wild wheel thro' sunshine, storm, and cloud; Thy wheel and thee we neither love nor hate. Turn, Fortune, turn thy wheel with smile or frown; With that wild wheel we go not up or down; Our hoard is little, but our hearts are great. I began to read it with a certain misgiving - so very many plays in many languages had been written around the same subject and so very few of them had been successful from both a dramatic and a literary point of view. The difficulty is perfectly obvious: most of the writers had been lovers of Dante first and dramatists after, and in an attempt to give truthful expression to the life of the man the absolute requirements of the theatre had been quite ignored. There is no greater human tragedy than that connoted by the life of the Florentine and yet the known elements in it, while lending themselves readily to literary, moulding, have usually defied the art of the dramatist who would also be a trustworthy biographer. I found Mrs. Rose's play to be good literature, good history, and at the same time it seemed to possess those elements requisite for a good acting play. The older Italian, which we call Latin, and the later Latin, which we call Italian, must not be regarded as parent and child; they are the same individual at various stages of development, as Dante was well aware. Throughout the treatise on language and literature to which he gave the name of De Vulgari Eloque'rztz'éz, the word he uses to designate his own mother-tongue is Latino. The three chief 'romance' languages, as we now style them, are for him French, 'spanish' (including Provencal), and 'latin'; the vernacular of Italy is vzzégm'e latz'num. His instinct was quite right; he would have understood Virgil, in all probability, though he had never read another word of ancient Latin, while Virgil would have understood him, and recognized in his speech something very closely resembling what he had heard every day in the streets of Rome, or the country lanes round Mantua.
