Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960 the famous book "A Geography of Norden", edited by Axel Sömme was published. It has been out of press for many years. In connection with a Nordic Week organized in Finland 1979 by the Pohjola-Norden Society, a body devoted to fostering closer relations and cooperation between the Nordic family of peoples, the Geographical Society of Northern Finland invited a group of geographers from the Nordic countries to produce a new textbook on the geography of Norden. A concise treatise dealing with the main geographical aspects of the Nordic countries was obtained within one volume concluded by a regional synthesis. Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard, Jan Mayen and the Faroe Islands, and the seas around Norden are also extensively treated.

Download or read book Flint Daggers in Prehistoric Europe written by Catherine J. Frieman and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century flint daggers have been among the most closely studied and most heavily published later prehistoric lithic tools. It is well established that they are found across Europe and beyond, and that many were widely circulated over many generations. Yet, few researchers have attempted to discuss the entirety of the flint dagger phenomenon. The present volume brings together papers that address questions of the regional variability and socio-technical complexity of flint daggers and their production. It focuses on the typology, chronology, technology, functionality and meaning of flint and other lithic daggers produced primarily in Europe, but also in the Eastern Mediterranean and East Asia, in prehistory. The 14 papers by leading researchers provide a comprehensive overview of the state of knowledge concerning various flint dagger corpora as well as potential avenues for the development of a research agenda across national, regional and disciplinary boundaries. The volume originates from a session held at the 2011 meeting of the European Association of Archaeology but includes additional commissioned contributions.

Download or read book The English Coast written by Peter Murphy and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interaction between people and the coast of England. It spans from 700,000 years ago, and the earliest evidence of humans in this remote corner of north-west Europe, to the end of the 20th century. The coastline has witnessed interesting and significant events throughout history and looks set to do so in the future. Often it is the first place where changes can be seen, for example the effects of climate change. It is also where evidence for human adaptation to environmental changes can most readily be seen. The coast has, of course, also been a cultural contact zone for millennia in terms of trade, industry, immigration and conflict. We are certainly at a time of great environmental and economic transition, so it is apt to now take a long view and place current events in context. Some changes happening today may seem unprecedented but in fact are not, while others are entirely new. One thing we can be sure of is that the coast and sea will become increasingly important to us, both as an economic benefit and as a threat.
