Book Fixed Ideas of Money

Download or read book Fixed Ideas of Money written by Tobias Straumann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most European countries are rather small, yet we know little about their monetary history. This book analyses for the first time the experience of seven small states (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland) during the last hundred years, starting with the restoration of the gold standard after World War I and ending with Sweden's rejection of the Euro in 2003. The comparative analysis shows that for the most part of the twentieth century the options of policy makers were seriously constrained by a distinct fear of floating exchange rates. Only with the crisis of the European Monetary System (EMS) in 1992–3 did the idea that a flexible exchange rate regime was suited for a small open economy gain currency. The book also analyses the differences among small states and concludes that economic structures or foreign policy orientations were far more important for the timing of regime changes than domestic institutions and policies.

  • Author : Alastair H. Thomas
  • Publisher : Scarecrow Press
  • Release : 2010-05-10
  • ISBN : 1461671841
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book The A to Z of Denmark written by Alastair H. Thomas and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark is the oldest monarchy in Europe. At different points in its history, Denmark's boundaries have encompassed England, Sweden, West Africa, India, and the West Indies. Despite its changing and relatively small boundaries, Denmark has played a much larger part in the politics of Europe than might be expected. Additionally, through its territories (Faroe Islands and Greenland), Denmark has managed to retain an important presence in the North Atlantic. Today, democratic Denmark, with its thriving capital Copenhagen, is peaceful, prosperous, and progressive. Within NATO, Denmark has contributed to peace-keeping in the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. The "Danish Model" of welfare gives Danes a real sense of social security and presents many naysayers with a provocative example of a successfully managed welfare state. Danes have a reputation for inventiveness and good design, whether in architecture, furniture, or industrial design. The A to Z of Denmark relates the history of this successful country through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on kings, politicians, officials, explorers, authors, architects, composers, painters, astronomers, educationists, reformers, political parties, social movements, and other aspects of Danish society.

Book The Baltic World 1772 1993

Download or read book The Baltic World 1772 1993 written by David Kirby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eagerly-awaited sequel shares the characteristics of its distinguished predecessor -- wide geographical and chronological span; expert mingling of political, social and economic history; and Dr Kirby's ability to keep the separate national threads of his account from tangling as he weaves them into the broad regional picture that is his main concern. Here he tackles the contrasting experiences of Europe's northern periphery -- affluence and democracy in the north, stagnation and authoritarianism in the south -- from the French Revolution to the collapse of the USSR and beyond. This is a masterly study of a region that is far from peripheral politically to the post-Soviet world.

Book Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945

Download or read book Economic Growth in Europe Since 1945 written by N. F. R. Crafts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling volume re-examines the topic of economic growth in Europe after the Second World War. The contributors approach the subject armed not only with new theoretical ideas, but also with the experience of the 1980s on which to draw. The analysis is based on both applied economics and on economic history. Thus, while the volume is greatly informed by insights from growth theory, emphasis is given to the presentation of chronological and institutional detail. The case study approach and the adoption of a longer-run perspective than is normal for economists allow new insights to be obtained. As well as including chapters that consider the experience of individual European countries, the book explores general European institutional arrangements and historical circumstances. The result is a genuinely comparative picture of post-war growth, with insights that do not emerge from standard cross-section regressions based on the post-1960 period.

Book Consensus Cooperation and Conflict

Download or read book Consensus Cooperation and Conflict written by Henning Jørgensen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that policy formation in Denmark is characterized by decentralization, Jorgenson (political science, Aalborg U., Denmark) presents a historical analysis of the development of the Danish welfare system. His central thesis is that there are repeated, recognizable, and unique traits in the way Danish politics and administration are designed that define a profile of structures of compromise and agreement between different social and political actors. He argues that principles of labor division form the basis of role definitions and actor relations. The public institutions function as mediators between macro, micro, and collective actors in conflict. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
