It is the verbatim text from a lecture given to the U.S. Brewer's Association by Dr. Max Henius at the Annual Convention in Atlantic City, N. J. October 2nd, 1913. I find these types of books a fascinating window into a different time. Just about everyone has seen a Carlsberg beer, but how many people have any idea where it came from, or who brought it into existence? Who started the best breweries? What makes people like a certain style of beer? The history of beer, ale and lager is fascinating. Here's a small snippet from the book to give you an idea of what you'll find in DANISH BEER AND CONTINENTAL BEER GARDENS: U.S. BREWERS' ASSOC. ILLUSTRATED LECTURE: ".....Jacobsen senior, who willed his entire brewery to the people - to which matter I shall revert a little later - his son, Dr. Carl Jacobsen, for whom the brewery was named 'Carlsberg,' built a new brewery adjoining the old plant which he called 'New Carlsberg.' The present Dr. Jacobsen, who had practiced the art of brewing in Germany and England, combined in this new brewery not only all the best in modern brewery equipment from the view- points of efficiency and economy in production, as you see in this brewhouse (page 1 6) but also the desire of himself and his father for artistic expression arising from a devotion to art which is almost a passion, coupled with a sense of obligation to the people which made them both feel that those who had the means should contribute to the betterment and pleasure of others. As ever since the dawn of civilization the highest aspirations of man have found expression in architecture and sculpture, the entire brewery was planned to afford visitors the emotions that are engendered by the aspect of beauty of form.
