Book Danish Architecture and Society

Download or read book Danish Architecture and Society written by Nan Dahlkild and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Danish Architecture and Society offers a fascinating architectural history of the institutions and public buildings that have helped shape the everyday lives of Danes since the eighteenth century. The book charts the emergence and development as well as the grandeur and ultimate demise of these institutions, tracing the underlying--and changing--architectural and societal ideals that have been influential in terms of design, organization, and furnishing. The individual contributions detail the often dramatic historical developments of buildings from industrialism's heyday, such as train stations, post offices and customs houses. Although some of these still exist, a great many have today either been adapted to other functions or demolished. The contributing authors examine the significance of the buildings at the time they were constructed and attending understandings of sustainable building, contrasting these with present-day notions of architecture and construction as a more makeshift phenomenon. Through more than two hundred illustrations--drawings, sketches, plans and photos, much of it never before published--the authors provide a vivid and compelling account of Danish architectural history and its influence in framing the Danish welfare state as we know it today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denmark, the southernmost Nordic nation, remains little-known to many citizens of the world. Too often conflated with its Scandinavian neighbors to the north, it is a land of generally flat terrain, with an inviting temperate climate. The land of the Danes has much to offer visitors, and this guide to Danish society, culture, and history offers an inside look, with details on Denmark's substantial contributions to science, engineering, exploration, seafaring, literature, philosophy, music, architecture, and many other fields. Brief portraits depict such Danes as "Clown Prince" Victor Borge, Hans Christian Andersen, Kierkegaard, and Out of Africa author Karen Blixen. Throughout, there is a focus upon Denmark's human rights record, democratic institutions, and humanistic traditions. By examining Danish culture, this work fosters a greater understanding of Denmark, its people, and their way of life.

Book Architectures of Dismantling and Restructuring

Download or read book Architectures of Dismantling and Restructuring written by Deane Simpson and published by . This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An architectural investigation of the Danish "good life" How have spatial changes affected the welfare experiences of citizens? What happens when long-standing institutions are restructured, dismantled or displaced elsewhere? How do emerging types of welfare space inform--or become informed by--shifting conceptions of the role the welfare system plays in our everyday lives? This volume seeks to address these pressing questions and more. Using Denmark as a case study, the book traces spatial transformations in the country's welfare system, from the end of the so-called golden age of the welfare state in the early 1970s to today. Architectures of Dismantling and Restructuringadopts a clear-eyed, nuanced perspective toward welfare and the "good life," investigating the consequences of Denmark's neoliberal turn and other significant sociopolitical changes. A rich analytical sequence of drawn visualizations supplements the book's textual and photographic descriptions.
