Book Working with Danes Tips for Americans

Download or read book Working with Danes Tips for Americans written by Kay Xander Mellish and published by KXMGroup. This book was released on 2021-01-20 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little, easy-to-read book will help Americans understand their Danish colleagues better. It is a companion volume to the author’s previous book, “Working with Americans: Tips for Danes.” If you’re an American who is about to do business in Denmark or with Danes, the Danish colleagues you will meet probably know a lot more about your country than you do about theirs. In fact, Americans often hear descriptions of Denmark that are not entirely correct. It is neither a socialist hellhole or a socialist paradise; instead, it’s a capitalist social welfare state, where voters have agreed to be taxed very highly in return for universal health care and tuition-free universities. Having the social welfare state as a backup influences the way Danes act in the workplace. Subordinates aren’t as dependent on their bosses as they are in some other cultures, so lower-level employees won’t perform a task just because the boss says so. Instead, they expect to be allowed to influence the assignment based on their own expertise, and carry it out independently without a lot of micromanagement. They may also jump over several levels of hierarchy to tell the top boss how they think the organization could operate more efficiently. One of the major differences between Danish business culture and US business culture is that Danes don’t need the kind of positive reinforcement that is common in the US. From their point of view, someone doing a job correctly requires no applause; comments are only necessary when something goes wrong. This can make Danes seem grumpy and negative to their American colleagues. This book will give you important insights into Danish business culture and Danish business etiquette and help you improve your interaction with your colleagues and counterparts in Denmark.

Book Americans in Denmark

Download or read book Americans in Denmark written by F. Richard Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare look at American immigrants to Denmark that reveals how, for some, the cultural differences between the United States and Denmark can generate creativity. Thomas constructed an 11-point questionnaire designed to find out why American writers, artists, and teachers have chosen to live in Denmark. Of pivotal interest is whether these emigrants from America are happier and doing better, more creative work in Denmark than they were doing at home. The immigrants who tell their stories here are the intellectually curious who have swapped one culture for another, who have dared enter a social and cultural limbo in which they can never be Danes, nor ever truly American again. As Niels Ingwersen, Managing Editor of Scandinavian Studies, notes, "The book is about a small group of people, but their reactions, thoughts, and emotions--not least their experience of existential ambiguity--is one that most expatriates know well." These essays, Ingwersen explains, "bring out, often eloquently, often poignantly, why the authors left America and why they probably will not return to their native country even though they are quite critical of Denmark and admit that there is much in America that they will miss." In general, these people are not America bashers; some even object to the term expatriate as connoting a lack of patriotism.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In letters to their homeland, Danes who emigrated to North America from 1842 to 1946 here give vivid, personal impressions of how they began life anew, far from the familiar surroundings of home. Passages selected by the authors from among more than a thousand emigrant letters provide a unique glimpse of life on the American prairie as well as on Chicago's notorious South Side. The narratives are presented in a series of themes, ranging from the crossing of the Atlantic to an inside look at the United States. Although few regretted the decision to emigrate, nearly all suffered pangs of homesickness, and many attempted to imbue their children with a sense of "Danishness." These Danes of the past come alive as they describe both successes and failures in their own words. It is the hope of the Danes Worldwide Archives that "A New Life" will help to strengthen the historical identity of Danish-Americans"--Back cover.
